Author Interview

IFs, ANDs, OR WHATs INTERVIEW WITH AMY METZ

Ifs

If you could step back into a moment or day in time, where would you go?

I would go back to when my sons were little. Maybe to a picnic we took or one of the times we cuddled and read books under the big tree in our backyard or reading at bedtime or . . . anytime of their childhood, really. Those were the best times.

If you could be anything besides a writer, what would it be?

I’d love to be a travel photographer. I love photography, but I’m an amateur. It would be wonderful to be able to travel and take pictures all day. Getting paid for it would be beyond wonderful.

If you could choose a fictional town to live in what would it be and from what book?

I would pick Goose Pimple Junction. I’ve lived there for so long in my head, I think it would be great to actually be there strolling the sidewalks, eating at Slick & Junebug’s Diner, going to Louetta’s bookstore, shopping at the small grocery, getting to know the townsfolk . . .

If you could live anywhere in the world, where in the world would it be?

If I could, I would live in Stockbridge, Massachusetts. The Berkshires is a gorgeous area, and I am in love with the town of Stockbridge. It’s a small town that reminds me a lot of Goose Pimple Junction.

Whats

What’s your all-time favorite movie?

It would probably be O Brother, Where Art Thou? Followed closely by Princess Bride, Pride & Prejudice, and My Cousin Vinny.

What’s your all-time favorite author?

It’s gotta be Robert B. Parker. I love his Spenser series, his Jesse Stone series, and his Sunny Randall series.

What’s your all-time favorite city?

Stockbridge, Massachusetts, which also has my all-time favorite library.

What’s your favorite television show or series?

Justified. I’ve watched the entire series three times and will watch it again. The writing and acting in that series is the best.

What do you collect?

Too much stuff. I’m sentimental and tend to not want to throw things away. But in the collectible category, I collect heart-shaped things—I constantly look for heart rocks—and just about anything else heart-shaped will catch my attention. Some of my favorite things are the heart-shaped gifts my kids have given me. I also collect decorative pumpkins (well, really, anything Halloween related), snowmen, and Santas. Oh, and antique flow blue dishes. And books.

What are you working on now?

I’m starting to get ideas for GPJ book 6, although I’m trying to decide whether or not to continue the series. I think I’m going to dust off the thriller I started several years ago about a serial killer who disguises himself as old and infirm to lure his victims. It will be a challenge to weave humor into that story!

Book Description:

It’s election season, and there’s a new candidate in town. Virgil Pepper is determined to take the job from Goose Pimple Junction’s long-time mayor. Virgil is a charming and charismatic candidate but someone who will say anything (and mean none of it) to get what he wants. Three things top his list: to become mayor, to acquire Jackson Wright’s land, and to make Caledonia Culpepper one of his many conquests.

Wynona Baxter is back, and she’s a new woman. Now Daisy has a new identity, new life, and new business–ironically named Killer Cupcakes. But the town soon finds out that isn’t the only kind of killer in town. Book five of the Goose Pimple Junction mystery series combines political hijinks, delicious cupcakes, Goose Juice moonshine, the ups and downs of finding true love, and, of course, murder.

It is said that “It’s a basic truth of the human condition that everybody lies. The only variable is about what.” Lying in politics, lying for personal and professional gain, lying about an identity . . . What are the folks of Goose Pimple Junction willing to lie for . . . and what are they willing to die for?

Book Excerpt:

Prologue

He entered the territory of lies without a passport for return.
 –Graham Greene

Caledonia was resplendent in a hot pink sweater and black slacks as she walked into Slick & Junebug’s Diner after getting her boys, Pickle—a high school senior—off to work and Peanut—a sixth grader—off to a friend’s house. It was her habit to stop in every morning before she went to open up the dress shop she owned. Her day didn’t really get started until she’d had her morning gossip and cup of coffee. This morning, the place was buzzing. With a smile and a wave, she scooted past the regulars¬—two old men, Clive and Earl—at their usual place at the counter and joined her best friend, Paprika Parker, in a window booth. They liked that spot so they could see what was going on in the town square while they drank their coffee and talked about town happenings.
Paprika could read Caledonia like a book. “What’s wrong?”
“No good morning? You’re just gonna jump right in?” Caledonia uprighted her coffee cup on its saucer.
“Might as well. I can see something’s up.”
“Is it that obvious?” Caledonia’s brow furrowed.
“Stop frowning. You’ll form wrinkles. And yes, to me it’s that obvious. Now for the last time, out with it.”
“Oh for heaven’s sake. All right.” She let out a heavy sigh. “Virgil made another play for me last night.”
“After all you’ve done to make it clear there will never be anything between you again? Why doesn’t the man ever give up?”
Caledonia’s hand went up to stop her friend. “It’s a power play. He wants to be the dump-er instead of the dump-ee. Don’t worry. I didn’t give in. What I did give him was what for. You woulda been proud of me, Spice Girl.” Caledonia had long ago given the nickname to her friend, even though she was always tempted to call her Pippi because she resembled an adult Pippi Longstocking. Caledonia hunched her shoulders and leaned in, slightly sheepish but a touch defiant. She cupped her hand to the side of her mouth and whispered, “I hauled off and whacked him over the head with a tennis racket.”
Paprika sat up straight, her eyes bugging out behind her glasses. “You did not.”
“I most certainly did. Admittedly, it was a reflexive action, but upon reflection I’m glad I did it. Say, it didn’t by any chance rain last night, did it?” Caledonia wound some of her long blonde hair around a finger.
“Not that I’m aware. What do you mean a reflexive action?”
“I’d told him to take a hike and walked away from him. When he came up behind me and grabbed my left arm, my right arm reacted. I tell you what, he dropped like a bag of flour.”
Paprika broke out in a huge grin. “I wish I’d been there to see that.”
The women were laughing when owner, waitress, and half namesake of the diner, Junebug Calloway, came to the table. She had a crease in her septuagenarian forehead.
“Junebug, don’t do that. It’ll make your forehead permanently wrinkled.” Caledonia held out her coffee cup.
“I just thought you’d be a might subdued this morning, Caledonia, what with the news and all. I know that man did you wrong, but laughing at a time like this? I’m a might surprised is all.” She finished filling the cup and set the pot on the table, hands on her hips.
The two women exchanged bewildered looks before directing their confusion toward Junebug. “What news?” they asked simultaneously.
Junebug’s mouth dropped open, and she got a gleam in her eye. She loved to be the first one to pass on a bit of gossip. “You mean you haven’t heard?”
Again, both women were in sync. “Heard what?”
“‘Bout Virgil.”
The women stared at her blankly.
“He got stamped ‘return to sender.’”
“Return to sender?” Caledonia’s hand went to her throat. “You don’t mean . . . ”
Junebug nodded. “I do mean. He’s picking turnips with a stepladder now.”
Caledonia’s head bobbed from side to side. “That’s ridiculous. I just saw him yesterday afternoon.”
“You didn’t conk him over the head, did you?” Junebug chuckled but stopped when she saw the look that passed between the women.
“What do you mean, Junebug?” Caledonia’s mouth had gone dry.
“Well, somebody did. Bopped him on that thick noggin of his. Now they’re basting that turkey in formaldehyde.” As an afterthought, she added, “May he rest in peace.”
Junebug’s eyes went from woman to woman. “Listen, I hate to deliver bad news and run, but I’m in the weeds. Look at this crowd. Nothing like a good murder to bring out the townsfolk.” She held up a finger to a man two booths away. “Be right there, Chet.” Returning her eyes to Caledonia, she said, “Anything besides coffee today, ladies?”
Caledonia shook her head with a vacant expression on her face.
“Bring us two chocolate iced donuts, Junebug,” Paprika said.
Junebug nodded. “It looks like y’all could use a pick-me-up. Two life preservers, coming up.”
When Junebug left, the women stared at each other, both instinctively closing their mouths when they saw the other’s wide open. Caledonia swallowed hard. Paprika covered her mouth with her hand.
Finally, Caledonia leaned in and whispered, “You don’t think I killed him, do you?” Sitting back, she answered her own question, “I killed him. I sent the man to be with Jesus.”
“Now, Caledonia, don’t go getting ahead of yourself. And I doubt it’s Jesus he’s keeping company with if you ask me.”
“You heard her. Someone conked him over the head. That someone was me.” Caledonia poked her chest with a finger. “I offed a man. I’m a stone-cold killer. What will happen to the children?”
Paprika grabbed her friend’s hand. “Hush it. Not another word until we find out more. And talk to a lawyer.”
“I don’t know if a lawyer will talk to me. After all, I just killed my last one.”
“Caledonia Culpepper, get ahold of yourself.”
Caledonia stared blankly and muttered, “You take care of the boys until Mother can get here.”
“Take care of the boys? What are you talking about?”
Caledonia slid out of the booth.
“Where are you going?”
“I reckon to jail.” She walked to the counter where Johnny Butterfield, the chief of police, sat. Offering him her wrists, she said, “Lock me up, Chief. I’m a murderer.”

Book Excerpt:

Talk of the Town

He may be good-looking, but good-looking won't put food on the table.
~Willa Jean Coomer

Downtown Goose Pimple Junction was bustling the next morning when Johnny parked his car and walked a block to the diner. The yellow tickets that were stuck under windshield wipers on some of the cars vaguely registered with him because Ima Jean’s abduction was on his mind, and he didn’t have room to think of much else. Periodically, he thought about Martha Maye and how pretty she looked when she’d brought him fried chicken, home fries, macaroni salad, and a slice of apple pie. But he forced his mind back to Ima Jean and how he was going to go about finding her.

The diner was crowded but went deadly silent when he walked in. Everyone stopped talking, and all heads turned his way. He met a few people’s eyes, nodded a hello, mumbled “Morning,” and sat down at the counter next to a man who looked older than Moses.

“You’re mighty brave to bring yourself in here today, Chief. I myself don’t hold no ill will, but then again, I ain’t got a car, so it’s no skin off my nose.”

“Come again—” Johnny started to say, but Willa Jean interrupted him.

“What can I getcha, Chief?” She put an emphasis on “Chief” but the word was dripping with disdain.

Johnny wondered if it was his imagination or was she glaring at him? He put a hand to the back of his neck as he craned his head around, finding several other people giving him the same expression. Curious.

“Coffee, a fried egg, and cheese grits, please.” He flashed her his best grin, but she didn’t seem to notice.

She turned on her heel without another word, calling to Slick, “A deadeye and mystery in the alley, Slick.”

Johnny noticed the old man cackling to himself and wondered what was so funny. He seemed to be a regular. Surely he was used to diner lingo. Moses turned to the man next to him and mumbled something that sounded like, “I haven't had this much fun since the pigs ate my brother.”

Willa Jean came back with a cup and saucer and a pot of coffee. As she poured the brown liquid into the cup, a good amount spilled into the saucer. She looked up at Johnny and deadpanned, “Oops,” but she walked away, making no attempt to clean it up.

Conversation had started again in the diner, but it was in hushed tones, not the loud chatter that Johnny had heard when he first came in. Once again, he looked around the restaurant and noticed furtive glances coming at him. A few words and bits of sentences wafted his way: “a lot of gall, arrogant, outsider, amateur, dumb as a fencepost . . . ” He considered asking the gentleman next to him if this was normal townsfolk behavior, but Willa Jean came back and set a plate in front of him. His gaze went from the plate to her eyes, which seemed to hold a challenge.

“Um . . . ma’am . . . this looks right tasty, but it also looks like poached eggs and hash.”

Willa put all her weight on her right leg and propped her hand on her hip. “Least your eyes work.”

“Well, see . . . I could be mistaken, but I thought I ordered fried eggs and grits.”

“You’re mistaken.” She flung a towel over her shoulder and walked away.

Johnny looked at Moses and said, “I’m late to the party. Wanna tell me what’s going on?”

“Oooh, law,” the man drawled. “That was almost as ugly as Uncle Moody’s divorce.” He swiveled off his stool, saying, “’Scuse me. I have to see a man about a horse,” and he made his way to the restrooms.

Goose Pimple Junction is just recovering from a kidnapping and a murder, its first major crimes in years, when trouble begins anew. Life is turned upside down in the quirky little southern town with the arrival of several shifty hooligans: A philandering husband intent on getting his wife back, another murderer loose in town, a stalker intent on frightening Martha Maye, and a thief who’s stealing the town blind of their pumpkins, pies, and peace. Together, they’re scaring the living daylights out of the residents and keeping the new police chief busier than a set of jumper cables at a redneck picnic. Suddenly, he has his hands full trying to apprehend a killer, stop a stalker, and fight his feelings for the damsel in distress.

Book Excerpt:

Chapter 1

Marry in haste, repent in leisure. ~Southern Proverb

Lenny drove to his neighborhood bar with the windows wide open and Johnny Cash blaring on the radio, but he was oblivious to both. He was thinking about the phone conversation he’d just had with his ten-year-old daughter Carrie. It made him crazy the way her mother’s family called her “Butterbean.” What kind of a name was that for a child? But today he was crazy for a whole new reason. Jealousy and anger tore through him faster than small-town gossip. His daughter had spilled everything, and just when he thought he’d finally gotten a break, she said, “Mama kinda had a boyfriend but not anymore.” And: “Mama was kidnapped, but she’s back now.”

He pulled into the parking lot of the bar thinking, Boyfriend? We literally aren’t even divorced yet and she had a boyfriend? He pounded his fist against the steering wheel. He knew she’d been cheating on him. And now she’d done it right in front of their daughter. No doubt about it, he was going to have to do something about this Martha Maye situation.

Pulling into a primo spot at the front door, he looked up at the old rusty sign that had been over the entrance for years: Teetotalers ain’t welcome here. He winced at the loud screech announcing his car door opening, followed by the same screech when he slammed it shut. He glanced around the parking lot and saw the same cars that were there every night. His feet crunched on the gravel as he walked, and he remembered waking up three months earlier and slowly realizing his wife and daughter weren’t there.

The familiar bacon and coffee smells were gone. Cartoons weren’t blaring on the TV. His wife’s clothes were missing, along with his daughter’s, her teddy bear, and her dolls. The bookshelves were dotted with bare spots where Martha Maye’s favorite knickknacks and paddywhacks had been. And then he saw the note on the kitchen table that said she was divorcing him and that he shouldn’t try to find them. The realization that she’d left him in the middle of the night and taken their daughter seared through him like a red-hot poker.

Pretty stealthy for a woman who could literally be outwitted by a jar of marshmallow fluff. If she thinks she can literally run out on me and then humiliate me by going out with some scumbag before we’re even divorced, she has another think coming. I’ll show her. I’ll put on the charm and win her back.

Country music blasted as he opened the door, turned his head, and spit in disgust. She literally can’t be let her out by herself. Just look where it got her: kidnapped and almost killed.

His daughter had told him they’d been staying at his mother-in-law’s house. He should have figured. He’d always known Louetta to be a meddlesome old biddy. She lied to me when I called looking for my wife and daughter. She aided and abetted a woman leaving her husband. She allowed nefarious suitors to court my wife. Both of them must have literally stopped to think and forgotten how to start again.

And then there was his no-account, good-for-nothing brother who, upon learning of the impending divorce, wanted to know if Lenny would mind if he dated Martha Maye. Boy, I’m gonna slap you so hard, when you quit rolling, your clothes’ll literally be outta style. My baby brother and my wife. Yeah. Over my dead body. How could he even ask such a thing? Both of them were nothing but a bunch of backstabbing traitors.

He hitched up his jeans under his overflowing beer belly, swaggered into the bar, and ordered a Colt 45. The jukebox was playing, “I Want a Beer as Cold as My Ex-Wife’s Heart,” and he thought that was pretty darn perfect for his life at the moment.

Looking around the room, he spotted a hot blonde giving him the eye. He sucked in his gut—a move that didn’t yield the desired result—and looked back, waggling his eyebrows suggestively. She brazenly smiled back at him.

How dare Martha Maye leave me? I can literally get any woman I want. And two on Saturday.

A football star in high school, homecoming king, and voted best looking his senior year, Lenny was used to women coming onto him, not leaving him. He put the bottle to his lips and downed half of it.

That woman was literally lucky to have me. Sure, I’ve put on a little weight, but only in the gut. I practically have to fight women off with a stick. Looking around the room again, he saw female eyes on him from several tables in the room. Yessirree, I still got it.

Lenny started to lift his bottle to his mouth again but halted midway when two men sat down heavily on barstools on either side of him; they looked capable of eating their young. Both men were muscular and tough. One was as tall as a telephone pole. One was as short as a gnat’s tail. The taller man had black eyes under bushy eyebrows, and the other man wore aviator sunglasses on a flat, wide nose. He pushed the glasses to the top of his head to give Lenny his best glare.

“We’ve been looking all over Hell and half of Georgia for you, boy.” Eyebrows scooted his stool in close, crowding Lenny.

“Shoot.” Lenny’s hand automatically moved to his ankle holster, checking for his knife. “That don’t surprise me none. You literally couldn’t find oil with a dipstick.”

“Solly says he’s had about enough of you,” Eyebrows said.

“Yeah,” Mr. Gnat joined in, “he’s had about enough of you.”

Lenny snorted. “You can tell Solly to blow it out his butt,” Lenny said boldly, more boldly than he felt. He shelled a peanut, popped it in his mouth, and threw the shell into Mr. Gnat’s face.

“Solly says not to let you off the hook this time.”

“Yeah, not to let you off the hook.” Mr. Gnat’s left eye twitched.

“What’s with Mr. Echo over here?” Lenny pointed his thumb at the short man.

The telephone pole ignored him and said, “Solly says you’ve screwed him over for the last time.”

“Yeah, the last time.”

“I didn’t screw him over the first time.” Lenny drained his bottle. He felt like his mouth was full of cotton. “Solly wouldn’t tell the truth to save his life from dying.” Lenny tried to stand up, but the men had him penned in.

“You can’t talk about Solly that way.”

“Yeah, not that way,” Mr. Gnat echoed.

Eyebrows looked behind Lenny to his friend. “This boy has the mental agility of a soap dish, Joey.”

“Yeah, a soap dish.”

Lenny leaned in real close to Joey, who said, “Whatta you think you’re doing?”

“Just wondered if I got close enough if I could literally hear the ocean.”

“Boy, what you need is an education,” Eyebrows said.

“Yeah, an edj-ee-cation.” Gnat strung the word out.

The men grabbed Lenny’s arms, lifting him off his stool. The song on the jukebox had ended, and Lenny heard the crunch of peanut shells as the men propelled him toward the door.

“Boys, y’all best not be messing with me,” Lenny snapped, trying to break free.

“That’s mighty big talk for a punk like you.” They stepped aside as someone came through the door, and then they threw Lenny through it. He landed on the ground but sprang right back to his feet, his dukes up, ready to fight.

Eyebrows was fast. He knocked Lenny to the ground again with a left hook. Joey followed up with two kicks to the ribs.

Lenny pulled himself into a ball, both to protect himself from further harm and to have better access to his ankle holster. But Joey saw the knife and kicked it away as Lenny drew it from his pants leg.

The men both grabbed Lenny by an arm again, pulling him upright, and Eyebrows punched him in the gut, causing him to double over. They double-teamed him and left him on the ground bloody and beaten, as cars whizzed past on the road in front of the bar.

Right before Lenny passed out, he thought: Tomorrow I’ll pack up and head for Goose Pimple Junction to reclaim what’s rightfully mine. I’ll literally be a devoted husband and father and get my family back. I ain’t gonna let that woman leave me. Nobody leaves Lenny Applewhite.

Rogues & Rascals In Goose Pimple Junction by Amy Metz (Author Interview / Book Review)

In association with author Amy Metz, Jersey Girl Book Reviews is pleased to host a book promo for Rogues & Rascals In Goose Pimple Junction!

Author Interview

Welcome to Jersey Girl Book Reviews, Amy!

Before we get to the interview, can you tell our readers a little bit about yourself.

Kathleen, thank you for having me here. Eons ago, I taught first grade for three years. I quit when I had my first baby. I was a stay-at-home mom/volunteer while my two sons grew up. After my first son went to college, I developed a sixteen-hour-a-day reading habit that morphed into a sixteen-hour-a-day writing habit. Now I write the Goose Pimple Junction cozy mystery series. My oldest son is married and my youngest son is in college. And I have a really cute boyfriend.

How long have you been a writer?

Since 2009. Soon after I started writing, I joined an online writer’s group, and in 2012 I published my first novel with a small press—an experience that turned into a nightmare. Since 2014, I have self-published my books.

Do you have a day job, or is being an author your career?

I am happy to say I devote all my time to the business of writing.

What inspired you to become a writer? Describe your journey as a writer.

I started writing as a stress reliever when I was taking care of my mother who had dementia. Writing about it was good therapy, but I soon discovered that I needed an escape from real life (and from writing about real life), so I started writing a murder mystery. That book turned out to be Murder & Mayhem in Goose Pimple Junction, book 1 in my series.

Please give a brief description/storyline about Rogues & Rascals in Goose Pimple Junction.

Rogues & Rascals is book 4 in the series and features Caledonia Culpepper as the main character. As Caledonia faces a divorce, she also finds her life in danger. Wynona Baxter has come to Goose Pimple Junction to carry out her first job as a hit woman. But Wynona, bless her heart, is a few peas short of a casserole, and she has a little trouble with her new career move. Even though both women face trying times, any rogues and rascals that cross them will discover how hard it is to keep a good woman down.

What was the inspiration for this story?

Life! I recently got divorced, and let’s just say my ex-husband’s lawyer got my creative juices flowing.

How did it feel to have your first book published?

It felt great. It was like giving birth a third time. Almost.

Do you write books for a specific genre?

Yes, so far I’ve stuck with cozy mysteries.

What genres are your favorite(s)? What are some of your favorite books that you have read and why?

I like mysteries best, and I love, love, love Robert B. Parker. His Spenser, Sonny Randall, and Jesse Stone series’ are my favorites, probably because he does such a good job developing his main characters.

Do you have a special spot/area where you like to do your writing?

I write on a laptop, so I can write anywhere I want, but it’s usually in my bedroom in a comfy chair or on my bed.

How do you come up with the ideas that become the storyline for your books?

My characters tell me what to write. Seriously. Occasionally I get an idea from real life.

When you write, do you adhere to a strict work schedule, or do you work whenever the inspiration strikes?

I work whenever I can. Writing, editing, marketing: I’m fortunate to be able to do it in the middle of the day or in the middle of the night, with breaks for Facebook and Pinterest.

What aspects of storytelling do you like the best, and what aspects do you struggle with the most?

Once I have the first draft down, my favorite part of the process is going back and adding the details, texture, and layers to the story. I usually struggle with the ending. I’ll be humming right along and then hit a wall. I have a hard time figuring out how the story should end.

What are your favorite things to do when you are not writing?

I love to bake. Cakes, cookies, brownies, cupcakes, pies . . . I love to bake. I also love photography, going to my son’s concerts, spending time with my family, and hanging out with my cute boyfriend. Reading and Netflix fill in the cracks.

What is/was the best piece of writing advice that you have received?

After you’re done writing a book, put it down for a while and walk away. Then go back with fresh eyes to edit and revise.

What is the most gratifying thing you feel or get as a writer?

I occasionally get messages from readers telling me how much they liked a book or how one of my books entertained them or helped them through a trying time. That’s a wonderful feeling!

How do you usually communicate with your readers/fans?

I get an occasional email, but I would say the majority of communication is on Facebook. Any form of communication is appreciated!

Is there anything in your book based on real life experiences or are they purely all from your imagination?

Yes, there are, and no, I’m not telling which are real and which are from my imagination!

What authors have been your inspiration or influenced you to become a writer?

So many! Like I said earlier, I once had an addictive reading habit. I think that lasted for about two years. I mean, I read all the time. I’m sure the combination of all those authors’ works influenced and inspired me to write.

What is your definition of success as a writer?

Ooh. That’s a hard one. I think if a writer is able to develop an idea and make it into a story with a beginning, middle, and end, and that person has written to their very best ability, and completed an entire novel, I’d say he or she has succeeded.

Are you currently writing a new book? If yes, would you care to share a bit of it with us?

Right now, I’m getting Rogues & Rascals ready to publish, and marketing and promoting it is taking most of my time. But I’m beginning to think about GPJ5, and a tiny seed is starting to germinate.

Thanks again, Kathleen!

Thank you Amy for visiting Jersey Girl Book Reviews, and sharing with us a bit about yourself and your novels.
