Book Description:

As darkness blankets the holy city of Charleston, South Carolina, Brack Pelton, an Afghanistan War veteran, steps out of a rundown bar after a long night. Before he gets to his truck, he finds himself in the middle of a domestic dispute between a man and a woman on the sidewalk. When a little girl joins the couple and gets hit by the man, Brack intervenes and takes him down. But the abuser isn’t finished. He pulls a gun and shoots the woman. Brack saves the little girl, but his world has just been rocked. Again.

The next day, while sitting on a barstool in the Pirate’s Cove on the Isle of Palms, his own bar, Brack scans the local paper. The news headline reads: Burned Body of Unidentified Hispanic Man Found at Construction Site. Nothing about a dead woman in the poor section of town. Brack feels a tap on his shoulder and turns around to see an eight-year-old girl standing behind him. She’s the little girl he rescued the night before, and she wants him to look into her sister’s shooting.

Violence and danger make up Brack’s not-too-distant past. Part of him craves it–needs it. And that part has just been fed. Things are about to heat up again in the lowcountry. May God have mercy on the souls who get in the way.

My Book Review:

In the second book of the Brack Pelton / Heat Series, Burning Heat, author David Burnsworth transports the reader back to the sultry lowcountry setting of Charleston, SC for another intriguing Brack Pelton Southern noir / mystery adventure.

Brack Pelton is an Afghanistan war veteran and owner of the Pirate's Cove bar on the Isle of Palm. When he leaves his friend Mutt's rundown bar, he stumbles upon a domestic dispute between a man and a woman that quickly escalates to the murder of the woman. Brack saves the woman's eight year old sister, but the next day the little girl returns and wants Brack to investigate her sister's murder. Brack is determined to find the killer even though the person is bringing heat upon his bar and life, so he teams up with an unlikely assortment of people and his loyal companion, Shelby, his dog, in a dangerous game of cat and mouse throughout the seedy section of Charleston.

Author David Burnsworth weaves a fast-paced and suspenseful tale that follows Brack's investigative journey as it takes him all over Charleston in search of the killer. The reader is easily drawn into this well written story with its richly descriptive plot and setting, it is filled with enough action and unsuspecting twists and turns that takes the reader on one hell of a thrilling roller coaster ride.

As a fan of Southern fiction and a frequent visitor to Charleston and the surrounding lowcountry areas, I thoroughly enjoyed reading this thrilling mystery. I was intrigued by Brack and his motley crew of sidekicks. I loved Brack's gritty nature and sarcastic attitude, and I found myself cheering for him and his crazy team of helpers as they embarked on another dangerous adventure.

With an intriguing cast of characters; witty dialogue and dramatic interactions; and a richly descriptive setting that makes a person want to visit the picturesque city of Charleston, its historic landmarks, and the surrounding lowcountry areas; Burning Heat is a classic Southern noir mystery novel that is a must read!

RATING: 4 STARS
