My Connection To Sarah's Evolution
By: Becky Komant
Every interview and conversation it’s one of the first questions I am asked:
“Is any of the story from your life?” “Is it true?”
I must admit, I definitely gave reason to question:
Sarah is a mom of five – I am a mom of four
Sarah is a fitness trainer – I am a fitness trainer
Sarah is a fitness competitor – I am a fitness competitor
… I could even add a little more but I am sure you get the point.
When I was developing the storyline to The Controlled I knew I needed a main character who was strong. Also one that many people could relate to. I don’t necessarily mean relating to the plot, but relating to her life. I remember sitting cross-legged on my gym floor across from my writing coach going over things. We bounced a few ideas back and forth and then it just came to me. I knew that by using the foundation of my life to create my main character, Sarah, it would just flow. They say to write what you know. I have knowledge in many areas of Sarah’s life, so it was the best direction to go. Originally, the main character was going to be a cheerleader with her dashing husband a coach for the football team. Glad I never went there!
Watching Sarah evolve has been fascinating for me. Being that it was my first book, I never had any idea of how captivated I would be by a character I created. She is very real to me. I put so much heart and soul into her – how she feels in each and every battle she must conquer. She is a beautiful girl with determination, a girl who learns through her journey what she is willing to live with and without. She is a compendium of many women in my life, some I have known and others who I have seen from afar but never met, some are just in my dreams.
I was out grocery shopping yesterday, someone said the name Sarah, I actually turned and expected to see her. I had goose bumps! Sarah will never be fiction to me. She will be the girl that I walk by that is struggling in her life, the one who is digging deep to overcome those struggles.

My Book Review:
From the back cover ...
Who controls your life?
What if every move and decision you made was manipulated by someone you never met? What if your direction, your actions, and your future were cradled in the hands of a stranger? What if that person was hellbent on devouring you?
Could you survive if you did not know who to trust?
In her debut novel, author Becky Komant weaves a riveting adult dramatic thriller set in Miami that follows the harrowing journey of Sarah Ruiz's escape from a traumatic and abusive marriage to Alex, a narcissistic and psychopathic control freak with a dangerous dark side. Sarah is desperate to escape Alex and gain independence for herself and her five children. Utilizing her training as a competitive fitness model and certified in personal training and sports nutrition, Sarah is determined to break free from the controlling hands of Alex, but her journey is not an easy one, for every twist and turn becomes a nightmare filled with a web of lies, deceit, blackmail, violence and sexual domination that has unforeseen and horrific consequences.
The Controlled is a dark dramatic thriller that grabs the reader's attention from the beginning and holds them captive until the surprisingly unexpected ending. Author Becky Komant delves deep down into the dark recesses of the human psyche and weaves a tale that is riveting yet oh so disturbing. It is a haunting and graphic tale that is tailored for a mature audience, Sarah's emotional journey will keep the reader sitting on the edge of their seats guessing what happens next, they will experience the full gamut of emotions that will leave them spent in the end.
You can't help but feel for Sarah's plight, yet as her story evolves there are times when you become frustrated and want to shake her while saying "what the hell are you doing, how can you be so naive?" The suspense, drama, domestic violence, and sexual domination scenes that is part of control freak and psychopath Alex's world is stunning, his ability to be ruthless and domineering at all costs is a shocking example of what lengths he will go to in order to maintain control over Sarah. And the mysterious Gabe Benoit, top modeling photographer who offers to help Sarah's career is not what he seems .... can Sarah escape from the clutches of Alex and find the strength to survive and gain her freedom? This and so much more awaits the reader in The Controlled.
