Book Description:

Friends don’t let friends make the same horrible relationship mistakes twice.

Rion, Amy, and Arielle, the three occupants of first-year dorm Harrison Tower’s Suite 17C have never met before the first day of school, but they soon discover they have one thing in common – being on the wrong end of an epically awful breakup.

Heartbreak sucks, especially when the girls should have seen the trouble coming from a mile away. But there’s no better time than the beginning of college to take charge of your own love life, and nobody better than a roommate to keep you accountable. Over ice cream and pizza their first week, the girls vow never again to date anyone like the assholes who ripped their hearts out and smeared them across the quad.

And that's how the Broken Hearts’ Society of Suite 17C is born.

Now, if only Crash, the tattooed, pierced, and probably stoned guy who works at Rion’s newest job, wasn’t so damn sexy and sweet...

If only Matt, the thoughtful and driven pastor’s kid, would quit being so okay with just being Amy’s friend…

If only Lauren, the innocent California girl with her own set of issues, would stop finishing Arielle’s sentences and invading her dreams…

It would be a lot easier for the girls to keep their promises to the Society and to themselves.

If only.

Book Excerpt:

Rion

“Oh my God,” Arielle moaned. “Pizza. You are the best. Seriously.”

A smile twitched at the corners of Rion’s mouth. “See? Things aren’t all bad.” * Now even Arielle cracked a smile. “It’s been pretty much the worst day of my life, but pizza always makes things better. Seriously, thank you.”

Yeah, me too.”

Arielle’s eyes went wide. “You got dumped too?”

“No, I just had to take a shit job I really didn’t want to take.” Rion had stormed out of the Studio determined to find some other place, any other place, to work. But all of them had online job applications that asked whether she’d ever been convicted of a crime. The little voice at the back of her head that said the Studio was the best opportunity she had was right. Dammit.

Rion needed to change the subject before she got all melancholy. That wouldn’t help anyone. “So which of these douchebag college guys do I have to murder?” The words were out before she thought about what she meant by them. Why did she give a shit about which Indiana Northern asshole had broken Arielle’s heart? It seemed like the crying was over, and hopefully so was the food-ordering. They could go about their lives going to different classes and moving past each other from the door of their suite to the doors of their rooms, and before they knew it, freshman year would be over.

But she still had some strange pull toward wanting to know. Wanting to care.

“None of the guys. But a two-faced sorority girl would be good.”

Ah, lesbian romance drama. Fucking fabulous. In the group home, Rion had seen more than a few gay girls making out one day and throwing punches the next, and that shit was never pretty.

Still, she caught herself guarding her words. Caring what Arielle would think of her. “Well, give me her stats and I won’t let her into the Suite. You have my word.”

Arielle cracked another smile as she reached for a pizza box. “Tall, willowy, straightened reddish-brown hair, wearing her sorority letters. Fucking gorgeous. And full of herself. You know, the usual.”

“Done and done. If you have a picture we can hang it on the wall and throw darts at it.”

But now the girl choked back a sob. “I have so many pictures.”

“Okay, okay. Too soon. Sorry.” Rion fumbled through the bags. “Look. I have ice cream too. It’ll be okay.”

And then the door to Suite 17C flung open, and the previously bubbly, bouncing, smiley Amy came in, her face dripping with tears and a total fucking mess.

My Book Review:

If you are looking for a thoroughly entertaining New Adult Romance to read this summer, than The Broken Hearts Society of Suite 17C is the book for you!

Author LeighAnn Kopans weaves a sassy tale that follows three college freshman girls: Rion, Amy, and Arielle, who become roommates, and while they come from very different backgrounds, and have very different personalities, they share one thing in come: they all enter college after experiencing a broken heart!

Written in the alternating perspectives of Rion, Amy, and Arielle, the reader is easily drawn into the girls' newly formed Broken Hearts Society of Suite 17C, where they follow the suitemates' freshman year in college as their bond of friendship blossoms amidst the drama, romance, humorous antics, and growing pains that comes with entering college.

I really enjoyed reading the alternating yet interweaving stories of each of the girls. I found it fascinating that three very different personalities could form a bond of sisterhood and blossoming friendship based on their shared experiences of heartbreak. Rion is the resident street smart girl who cusses like a sailor, Amy is the small town Christian girl, and Arielle is a beautiful lesbian: each girl has her own story to tell, but the reader is in for a real treat as they follow the girls' journey as they grow and come into their own during the first year of college. I loved the mixture of drama, friendship, and romance that was interwoven throughout the story, as well as the blossoming bond of friendship and witty interactions between the girls.

The Broken Hearts Society of Suite 17C is a lighthearted fun read that will provide a lot of laughs and leave a smile on your face!

About The Author

Raised on comic books and classic novels, LeighAnn Kopans developed an early love of science fiction and great literature. As an adult, she rediscovered her love for not only reading, but also writing the types of fiction that enchanted her as a teen. Her novels are packed full of flights of fancy, first loves, unexpected friendships, and all the other things that make self-discovery stories so fun to tell.

LeighAnn, her husband, and four children live in Columbus, Ohio. When she’s not immersed in the world of fiction, you can find her with her nose buried in her Kindle, obsessing over the latest superhero movie, or using her kids as an excuse to go out for ice cream (again).

Leaving Eva by Jennifer Sivec (Author Interview / Book Review / Contest Giveaway)

In association with Chick Lit Plus Blog Tours, Jersey Girl Book Reviews is pleased to host the virtual book tour event for Leaving Eva by Author Jennifer Sivec!

Author Interview

Welcome to Jersey Girl Book Reviews, Jennifer!

Before we get to the interview, can you tell our readers a little bit about yourself.

I’m Women’s Fiction Author, Jennifer Sivec, and I live a very full and busy life, sometimes going about a thousand miles a minutes without a free moment in the day. My mind is always racing and I’m always looking for that “one thing” that happens in my day that will inspire a story or a character. I took some years off from writing and during that time, I always felt like there was a little person in my head, narrating to me throughout my day. But when I started writing again, that little voice went away and suddenly it all made sense. Writing keeps me sane and focused, and it balances out a little bit of my mania because when I’m writing, I’m not thinking about or doing anything else. But more than writing, I love my family. They are the most important things and I focus on keeping my priorities straight so that I can enjoy my life with them, above everything.

How long have you been a writer?

I’ve been a writer for as long as I can remember, always journaling, writing short stories, and poetry. I can’t remember a time when I wasn’t writing.

Do you have a day job, or is being an author your career?

I do have a day job, which makes it challenging to write sometimes due to time constraints. But I’m fortunate that I’ve worked for the same company for almost sixteen years, and I love my job. I get to work with fun, incredible people, and my job is challenging and interesting. I have no complaints. I love that I get to do both.

What inspired you to become a writer? Describe your journey as a writer.

I’ve always been a reader and writing was a natural transition. The more I read, the better I wrote and the more I wanted to write. I used to write short stories and gradually moved on to poetry and song lyrics. I wish I would’ve kept everything that I’ve written over the years, but a lot of it got lost with various moves. Now I just have what I’ve written in the past five years or so. I wish I would’ve kept some of the poetry I had written when I was younger, but I love the stories that I get to write now. They are fuller and more complex and they take on a life of their own. I think my writing is more interesting now than it ever was, due to my own life experiences and my own maturity as a woman and as a person.

Please give a brief description/storyline about Leaving Eva

Leaving Eva isn’t an easy read, but it’s a fulfilling one. There are so many elements that begin with the birth of a baby, named Eva, and a young mother who desperately struggles with her own demons. The story follows Eva through her abandonment and eventual adoption as she lives a life wrought with emotional and physical abuse. She resorts to self-mutilation to ease her pain, and eventually finds comfort and love with a boy who is willing to follow her wherever she goes. They grow up, marry, and as they grow older, their relationship takes on the typical struggles of most adult relationships, and Eva/Brynn must finally come to terms with herself and her inability to trust and love. The storyline follows Eva and her birth mother Ellie, and explores the dangers of addiction, alcoholism, and abuse. There are many other elements such as friendship, kidnapping, and murder that weave their way throughout Leaving Eva and make way for the sequel, Losing Eva.

What was the inspiration for this story?

I was abandoned around the age of two and adopted around the age of three. I started out wanting to tell a story about abandonment and adoption unsure of which direction I would end up going in. Eventually the characters took over, and Leaving Eva became something else entirely.

How did it feel to have your first book published?

It felt serendipitous, as though it was meant to be and I had finally figured it out. For a split second, it truly felt magical.

And then suddenly, it was unbelievably horrifying and I felt like I was about to stand naked in Madison Square Garden in front of thousands of people who were going to examine every word, every thought, every character I had written and judge me with a microscope.

And then it felt magical again.

That’s how it feels every time. :D

Do you write books for a specific genre?

I’ve mostly been writing women’s fiction, but I have a fantasy novel (the first of a series) waiting to be edited and proofed.

What genres are your favorite(s)? What are some of your favorite books that you have read and why?

I write what I read, so I absolutely love chick lit, women’s fiction, and fantasy novels. When I was a girl, I read a ton of mythology and when I was a young adult I loved the classics, Stephen King, and anything interesting. It didn’t matter which genre it was in, which is still my philosophy. If it’s interesting, I’ll read it. It doesn’t matter which genre it’s in or who wrote it. One of my favorite books is The Time Travelers Wife and I will always be in love with Shel Silverstein books. I love the Perks of Being a Wallflower and anything by Anne Rice. I just read Killing Kennedy, which I found to be interesting and am currently reading Alabama Skye by my Booktrope proofreader, J.C. Wing. I’ve been behind on my reading, but I have a vacation coming up soon and am hoping to catch up.

Do you have a special spot/area where you like to do your writing?

No, I don’t have a place right now. But I envision a sunroom with a lot of light and flowers, and plants, at some point in my life. I write anywhere and everywhere I can grab a few spare moments no. I can’t really afford to be too picky because I have to write when inspiration strikes and when I have extra time to do so.

How do you come up with the ideas that become the storyline for your books?

I make a lot of notes, so usually if something inspires me; I write it down for future reference. I pick up the storyline from there.

When you write, do you adhere to a strict work schedule, or do you work whenever the inspiration strikes?

I write when I can, whether it’s for twenty minutes or an hour. It’s the most challenging part of being a writer at this point in my life, now.

What aspects of storytelling do you like the best, and what aspects do you struggle with the most?

I love that there are no limits to what I can imagine or write. I love that when I begin to think, “You can’t write that!” that I can stop and tell myself that there is no reason why I can’t. The challenge is when I’m writing fantasy and the story needs to be fantastic, yet believable. I question the authenticity of the characters all of the time because they have been completely fabricated in my mind. It’s a love/hate relationship when I’m writing fantasy, but I love it. It’s so much fun.

What are your favorite things to do when you are not writing?

My favorite thing to do is anything that involves my husband and children. We love to play sports, and just hang out together. I’m pretty low-key when it comes to my down time, which doesn’t happen too often. But I have two boys and they challenge me physically and mentally, so any time spent playing sports with them is time well spent.

What is/was the best piece of writing advice that you have received?

The first piece of writing advice I ever got was to write the stories that I want to read. I always keep that in mind when I’m writing.

What is the most gratifying thing you feel or get as a writer?

It is incredibly humbling and gratifying when someone writes to you or tells you that they love your books. I always have to read it a couple of times and have to refrain from saying, ”Are you sure you messaged the right person?!”

How do you usually communicate with your readers/fans?

I usually communicate with my readers through Facebook and Twitter, any kind of social media.

Is there anything in your book based on real life experiences or are they purely all from your imagination?

I think I put a lot of things in that are in my sub-conscious, but I don’t purposely create any of my characters or any of my storylines from real life. There are elements of my books that I have no personal knowledge of, and only know from research, so that has come directly from my imagination. The fantasy novel, The Lost Children, is 100% imagination, with the exception of the relationships that intertwine throughout the story.

What authors have been your inspiration or influenced you to become a writer?

I would definitely say that in my younger years, it was Anne Rice. I loved how she could weave a story and create such strong, yet flawed characters. I have always adored and related well to characters that struggle with their own demons. I have always wanted to be a writer and one day I woke up and I realized that the only person holding me back was me, so I decided that I wasn’t going to get any younger and the time to do it was now. I haven’t looked back since.

What is your definition of success as a writer?

I think that my definition of success is anytime someone chooses to read anything I’ve written. I’m always so amazed when someone reads and loves any of my books!

Are you currently writing a new book? If yes, would you care to share a bit of it with us?

I’m currently writing the third and final novel in the Eva Series. This is technically my fifth book, though the fantasy novel isn’t published yet. I’m in process of republishing all of my books with Booktrope Publishing, so my schedule for releasing books has been delayed. Which secretly, is a very good thing because I’m less than ¼ of the way through the first draft of the final book in the series, Saving Eva. After that, I’ll revisit the fantasy series and write the second book in that one.

I can’t share much with you from Saving Eva, other than to tell you that the third novel will be a standalone, so that you can read it even if you haven’t read the other two. Here is a short unedited excerpt:

“You stupid bitch, you stupid bitch,” Thomas haunts me in my prison, his words echoing cruelly in my head. Even though I try to rest, I can’t, and when I get too upset the machine gives a little blip and reminds them that I’m still here. Still suffering, still wishing and praying for death. The only comfort I have is when Eva comes to visit and I can hear her beautiful voice, telling me about her day, her life, and her love. She talks me as though she knows I am in here, even though she doesn’t really believe that I am.

For her, I wish I could live. For her, I wish I could do so much more than lie dormant and helpless. It was only for Eva that I was able to survive the accident that nearly ended me. I knew that if I didn’t live, she couldn’t live, and I couldn’t let her down like I let Sophie down. Eva wasn’t ready to meet her sister, yet, and I wanted so much for her to live.

Jennifer, thank you for visiting Jersey Girl Book Reviews, and sharing with us a bit about yourself and your writing career!

Book Description:

There is a secret pain lurking within all of us, waiting to consume us if we allow it.

On the outside, Brynn Michael seems to be living the perfect life. She’s a successful businesswoman married to a handsome and devoted husband. But nobody, not even her husband and childhood sweetheart, Adam, knows the true depth of Brynn’s horror. Abandoned on the side of the road by her young drug addicted mother, then abused by her adoptive father, teenage Brynn turns to the only solace she can find in the sharp end of a razor. She spends her lifetime hiding the scars, both physical and emotional, until she has no choice but to face what she has been running from her entire life. Brynn must figure out a way to confront her past or risk losing Adam, the only true love she’s ever known, forever. But in spite of it all, Brynn may not have the ultimate choice, as the past eventually seeks her out.

Leaving Eva is the heartrending story of one woman’s battle to overcome her tragic childhood and the abandonment and abuse that haunt her.

Caution: Eva’s story is contains graphic violence, strong language, drug abuse, domestic abuse, and child abuse. In this dramatically dark novel, Jennifer Sivec, author of women’s fiction, delves into the selfishness and depravity of human nature, and begs you to question whether happiness can ever truly be attained once you have been deeply scarred.

Book Excerpt:

Excerpt Two: Brynn’s Secret Scar

Brynn took the razor out and her hands were trembling. She held it up to her side and held the cool metal against her skin for a brief moment. Ouch! So sharp! She saw a tiny bubble of blood rise up, and she stared at it for a long moment. She slowly drew the blade across her side making a long line from the middle of her stomach to around her side as far as she could. She didn’t feel the pain at first as she just watched the blood pop up in a perfect thin line, fascinated. She thought about making another line, but she hesitated. She wanted to enjoy this one first. She wanted to think about this one for the rest of the day.

I can’t believe how brave I am! I can do it! She was proud of herself.

She blotted up the blood with a tissue until it stopped bleeding. She was careful not to go too deep, even though she knew that she could go deeper. She didn’t want to keep bleeding all day and give away her secret.

She didn’t want anyone to know, not even Stacy. She just wanted to keep it to herself.

She got dressed after she bandaged her cut and she went to school. All day, she could feel it stinging as she moved, as she sat in class, as she ate lunch with Stacy in the cafeteria. She thought about the scar that must be forming by now and felt strangely happy.

Stacy never saw Brynn happy. It was something they had in common. She thought that she even saw Brynn smiling to herself, and she was curious.

At the end of the day, Brynn realized that she hadn’t thought about Thomas once. She was so obsessed with her secret scar that she didn’t feel choked up as she usually did. She almost felt free as her mind was distracted with her secret.

She didn’t know how she survived up to this point without something else to occupy her mind. How have I lived this long without doing this.

She couldn’t wait to do it again.

The next day she found herself with the razor blade in hand staring at the girl in the mirror again. Do it again! Cut somewhere new! She stared at herself naked, focusing only on the smooth skin of her stomach, and her cut from the day before. She cut a perfect straight line above the other one. She took her time, savoring the feel of the blade against her skin. She hoped that this could be her salvation.

At thirteen, she already knew that without this, she would have nothing, and that she would be nothing. Without this pain, that she could control and find her peace in, the other pain would overcome her, overtaking her. The pain of her birth mother leaving her, and her father hating her, would consume her, and she knew that she would die.

She knew that this tiny sharp blade would save her.

My Book Review:

Oh my goodness! If you want to read a powerful and compelling women's fiction novel that will take you on an emotional roller coaster ride, then Leaving Eva is that novel!

In Leaving Eva, author Jennifer Sivec weaves a haunting dark tale that engages the reader to follow the tragic life story of Eva/Brynn Michael. This heart wrenching story follows Eva/Brynn's life through her childhood and adult years dealing with abandonment, adoption, and living a life wrought with emotional and physical abuse. To ease her pain, she resorts to self-mutilation, until she finds comfort and love with Adam, her childhood sweetheart. Brynn and Adam marry, and while dealing with the struggles of normal adult relationships and issues, Brynn is forced to face the demons of her traumatic past, and come to terms with herself in order to get over her inability to trust and love.

Leaving Eva is not an easy story to read, it is the kind of dark story that draws the reader in and takes them on an roller coaster ride where they will experience the gamut of emotions as Eva/Brynn's life story unfolds.

Author Guest Post

Ten Surprising Things About Nicky Wells

So Kathleen asked me for a small interview with a difference—a kind of free style Q&A, as it were, to reveal a few things that perhaps you haven’t read about me on this blog before.

Without further ado, therefore, here are ten things that you might find surprising about me. And I’m brutally honest here.

1. I can’t swim, at least not in a save-my-life kind of way. If I feel in a lake, a river, or an ocean, I would most probably drown. You see, what happens is that I get water on my face and up my nose, I panic, I black out and I drown. In fact, passing out in the water was my party trick during swimming lessons at school.

2. I detest feet. Yes, I realise they’re jolly useful to walk on. But I just can’t stand the sight of them—especially if they have long unkempt toenails, ugh!—or the smell of them. I’m borderline podophobic. If my husband puts a foot anywhere near a pillow, I have to change the pillow case. If his feet have been near a sofa cushion, I won’t put my head on it. (NB: it’s not that my OH’s feet are stinky or unpleasant. I just don’t like feet.)

3. I once spent a night on a tour bus with a rock band. And that’s all I’ve got to say about that.

4. My favourite colour is blue. Most of the clothes in my wardrobe are blue. I’d paint my house blue if I were permitted.

5. I find it easier to write in English than in German, even though German is (notionally) my mother tongue.

6. I am terminally afraid of wasps. And guess what? They smell my fear, and they make a wasp-line straight for me. I reckon they recognise my voice, too. So, spheksophobic as well as podophobic. Ah well, we all carry our share of phobias. At least I can deal with spiders, confined spaces, darkness and other common fear-factors. Also I am most definitely not afraid of water, even though I can’t swim.

7. I sing. I sing all the time. I don’t sing well, but I sing. (In fact, I met my hubs whilst singing in a choir, but that’s a story for a different day). If I don’t sing, I hum. It can be quite embarrassing, especially on public transport. But if I’m happy, I’m liable to burst into song. And I’m a very happy person.

8. My favourite TV shows are Castle, Castle and Castle. Oh, and Person of Interest, The Mentalist, and Covert Affairs. And NCIS. Cheesy, I know, but I can’t help myself. We have this channel called 5USA over here that shows all sorts of American shows, and I’m addicted.

9. Even though I write romance, one of my own favourite genres to read is crime. In fact, I try to steal my rhythm and pace from crime novels. Favourite authors include Lee Child and David Baldacci.

10. I suck at playing Scrabble. Seriously, I always loose without fail. I know! I’m a professional wordsmith, but I couldn’t’ Scrabble my way out of a paperbag. Go figure!

11. (I know, I was only allowed ten points, but I needed a P.S.) 7 Years Bad Sex is NOT based on my life. My hubs and I are not afflicted by the predicaments described in the novel. Just, you know, for the record, in case you were wondering.

That was me. How about you?

Book Description:

One wedding. One curse? Disaster ever after…

A seven-years-bad-sex curse? Surely not! Yet something went wrong when rock singer Casey and drummer Alex got married on that beautiful yacht anchored off St Tropez in the south of France. Something went badly wrong. For even on their wedding night, the young couple discovers a complete and somewhat surprising inability to make love. Muddling through their honeymoon with a string of thin excuses for their predicament, the lovers defer finding a solution (and panicking) until the return to their home in London. After all, they married for life and to make rock music, not for the love of sex. Right?

But when they resume life as normal in London, all hell breaks loose. Increasingly frantic in their quest for release, the unhappy newlyweds embark on a string of hilarious and occasionally harmful antics that drives them, their band, and an assortment of random strangers to the brink of despair. But it ain’t over ‘til it’s over or, in this case… it ain’t over ‘til the newlyweds sing.

Says Nicky: This book came to me at a fancy dinner way back when in November 2013. It was a fairly drunken affair, and speeches were being made. We were all toasting each other and having fun. Then someone shouted at me. “You didn’t look at me. Argh! That means 7 Years Bad Sex.”

I don’t actually believe in curses, nor am I particularly superstitious. But at that precise moment, a story popped in my head in its entirety. The potential for entertainment with comic mishaps and other antics as a young couple tries to breathe life into their flagging romance was simply too delicious to ignore. And that’s how this book was born…

Book Excerpt:

There was a stunned silence in the room while Alex and Casey tried to assimilate the importance of this statement. She remembered all too well her conversation with Alex on the yacht after they had trawled through the wedding video. He had pointed out to her even then that she hadn’t looked at him.

Casey shivered. She caught Alex’s eye and saw nothing but utter confusion. Liza was still standing up, one fist raised in an air punch. Sasha had taken one of Casey’s hands into her own.

Eventually Alex spoke. ‘Maybe we didn’t look at each other. So what?’

Liza and Sasha shared another look. ‘The seven-years-bad-sex curse!’ they shouted as one.

Alex burst out laughing. ‘The seven-years-bad-sex curse?’ he repeated. ‘You’re taking the mickey, right?’

Myles was chuckling so hard, he toppled over sideways on the sofa and had to hold his stomach. ‘That’s why we had to rush over here? To tell them about a seven-years-bad-sex curse?’

‘Laugh all you want,’ Liza said calmly. ‘But you’re watching it in action.’

Casey swallowed hard. She didn’t believe in curses. They were nothing but delusory superstitions from the middle ages. But still, both Sasha and Liza looked utterly serious.

‘So—so what does that curse entail?’ Casey asked, her voice almost a whisper.

Sasha produced her smartphone and called up a website. ‘It says here,’ she said, ‘there’s a superstition in many parts of southern Europe about how not looking at each other when clinking glasses during a toast brings couples seven years bad sex.’ She angled her phone so that everyone could see the screen.

‘And you were in France when you committed this ritualistic mishap,’ Liza offered helpfully. ‘So that definitely applies.’

My Book Review:

What does a newly married couple do when their fairytale wedding turns into a honeymoon disaster with a curse of 7 years bad sex?

Rockers Casey and Alex have a fairytale wedding on a yacht in the Mediterranean Sea off the coast of St Tropez in the south of France, but when it comes to their wedding night, a strange curse befalls the honeymooners and they are unable to consummate their marriage. And if you think that is bad, the curse is 7 years bad sex ... oh hell no! From their honeymoon to their home in London, Casey and Alex try everything under the sun to break the curse with crazy antics and cosmic mishaps. Can this woefully sexless couple get their marital bed a rockin'?!

Since the publication of my novel Anthony I have been asked, “Since you tell us that you like to call attention to current events in your novels, why make bullying such a central topic in the beginning of the book. Do you consider bullying a hot-topic?” Yes I do! To most people it may not be in the same category of importance as ISIS, but to a youngster having to endure bullying it is the most important thing affecting his or her life. If you let it, bullying can destroy your life. Some kids even commit suicide as the only way out. Those are the instances covered in the news. We don’t hear enough about the kids that stand up to the bullies. I think those stories should be highlighted to serve as encouragement to those having difficulty coping with the bullies.

In my novel Anthony, a likable kid, has to cope with bullies without the support of a peer group. He only has his mother and trusted dog as support. Yet he wins out in the end. I am told “That’s easy to write, but you have no idea how hard it is on kids to be bullied.”

That’s right. My personal knowledge is very superficial. Before I went to college I had attended seven different schools. I thought it was normal and apparently accepted that the ‘new’ kid was bullied until he/she was accepted by one of the groups in the school. For a boy, this usually meant at least one fight with some boys, who later became friends. This was so routine that I can’t recall most of these incidents, except one which I actually enjoyed.

My family had recently moved from Aruba to the USA and I was once again enrolled in a new school. Friends of ours from Aruba moved at about the same time to the USA. Three of their sons were enrolled in the same school as I was. One of the boys was a good friend of mine. His name was Kenny. Kenny was not really one of their sons, he was a nephew. Kenny’s mother lived in Surinam and Kenny’s father was a native Indian. Kenny had been living with his uncle and aunt in Aruba since he was eleven, and they brought him with them to the USA. About two weeks after school started, five boys starting taunting me. Being a little hot-headed, I started a fight, five against one. I did not stand a chance, and I was really getting beat-up. Then out of nowhere, Kenny appeared. He was more than four inches taller than the kids who were beating up on me. His shoulders and biceps would have made a varsity football player jealous. Calmly Kenny pulled my assailants from me and proceeded to give them a thrashing. Never mind that there were five of them. Kenny tossed them around like they were ping pong balls. Anyway, that’s the way I remember the incident. Maybe I have embellished it a little to make the memory even more enjoyable.

I had Kenny. I gave Anthony a dog. I hope all kids being bullied get some help to overcome the bullies. Unfortunately, most kids have to rely on their own strength to overcome the problem. I hope that reading books like Anthony will encourage them.

Book Description:

Life has never been easy for Anthony, the secret love child of a well-known US general and his beautiful mistress. After his father perishes in a plane crash, his cancer-stricken mother, Yuni, is forced to move with him to a tiny New York City apartment. And to make matters worse, he’s flagged as an easy target for neighborhood bullies, who constantly terrorize him inside and outside of school.

But after a brutal attack prompts him to fight back in a fit of rage, things start to turn around for the young boy. He shows promise joining the swim and wrestling teams in school, and begins to grow into the tall and physically fit body he inherited from his father.

Just when Anthony’s situation seems to be getting better, however, tragedy strikes his life yet again. In order to put the pieces back together, he turns to some of the strong female figures in his life. But it’s the one girl whom he least expects who may have the power to heal him—shedding his image as the illegitimate son through the magic of love and helping him leave his tragic childhood behind.

Praise for Anthony by Harold J. Fischel:

"It's not often that I find a book that truly moves me, but Anthony may have just been it. Anthony is so real...such a realistic and poignant character. He is bitter, confused, sad, angry, and while his experience is not necessarily the norm of a typical young adult, you can easily relate to him. What a transformation. Anthony goes from a scared and weak child to a fierce, understanding, and competent young man. Fischel writes with skill and craftsmanship that is a joy to read. I would read anything else he has to offer in a heartbeat."- Katelyn Hensel, Readers' Favorite

"The young boy, Anthony, captures your heart in the first few chapters, and you will want to continue with him through his happy, frightening, joyful, daunting journey toward manhood. A good read from start to finish." J. Herrick, Amazon Reviewer

"New Adult, Coming of Age, Contemporary Fiction's coming of age story, Anthony, is inspiring and heartwarming. Fischel's writing style is accomplished and smooth, and I quickly became immersed in this athletic and ethical story of triumph over adversity. Anthony is a marvelous book and is highly recommended reading."- Jack Magnus, Readers' Favorite

"Loved the story line, could not put it down. Although it is listed as a novel, it is sad to think this is reality for some kids."- Donna Connely, Amazon Reviewer

"Anthony by Harold J. Fischel is a wonderful coming of age novel. I loved the story of Anthony,...  I welcomed all the surprises and I loved all the characters. Anthony was resilient and strong, even when he was still a kid. Everything he experienced growing up only made him stronger, some of the things that happened to him even made me cry. All the supporting characters also played big roles in Anthony's success. Overall, a good book with great characters."- Lorena Sanqui, Readers' Favorite

My Book Review:

Anthony is a refreshing coming of age story that follows the journey of Anthony Walker as he learns to overcome adversity in his life from childhood into adulthood, and his resilience to survive and grow into a strong and independent man.

Author Harold J. Fischel weaves a compelling and poignant tale that easily draws the reader into Anthony's emotional story, it will tug at your heartstrings and stir your soul. As the reader follows Anthony's life, you can't help but feel compassion for all the adversities that he faced throughout his life, but his resilience to move forward is inspirational and a testament to his ability to survive and triumph over the adversities, and become a strong and successful young man.

As I followed Anthony on his personal journey into manhood, I couldn't help but experience the full gamut of emotions. Through every trial and tribulation that he faced, my heart ached for him, while I applauded his resilience to overcome every daunting challenge with the help and support of some really wonderful people in his life. And while you wouldn't wish any person, especially a child, to have go through so much adversity in their life, the difficult lessons learned hopefully helps them become that much stronger a person.

The author does a wonderful job of thoughtfully delving into the following social issues: illegitimacy, bullying, and teen-adult sexual relationships.

Anthony is a wonderful story of overcoming adversities and the ability to move forward in life.
