5 Ways I Stay Motivated As A Writer

Ah, the answer to the question every writer is looking for… Most writers struggle from time to time, or far too often, with crippling cases of writer's block. No, writer's block isn't just a myth or fable. It's that point in time when your brain is absolutely empty, your words are muddled together, and you know it's time to throw in the towel before you type one more word of gibberish into a Word document.

Been there?

I've worked as a freelance writer for four years. In that time, I've rarely struggled with legitimate writer's block, although I've had my share of exhaustion, frustration, and tears.

Here are 5 of my secrets to keeping your motor running as a writer:

1. Write on a variety of topics. Since I work as a freelancer, I have the pleasure of picking and choosing from a number of different clients and topics to fill up my schedule. If you find yourself getting bored of writing on one topic, simply move on to another subject or genre to stay fresh.

2. Read as often as possible. My husband makes fun of me because I always fall asleep with my nose in a book the moment my head hits the pillow. Sure, it may not look like I'm reading - but I promise that I really am! Reading regularly keeps me motivated, and it also makes me jealous of other talented authors whose styles I may want to emulate in my next book.

3. Take a break. It may seem counterintuitive, but take a moment to eat lunch, exercise, or watch some pointless TV to give your brain a rest. Voilà! You just may find something to write about.

4. Use a flowchart. If you can't seem to tackle the mountainous task of writing a novel, start out small by creating a flowchart of your ideal characters and plot lines. No one says that you have to stick to it, but it will prepare you to write that first chapter.

5. Reread positive reviews and feedback. If you're having one of those days where you feel completely unfit to be a writer, it's time to take a trip down memory lane and reread old five-star reviews or client feedback. A small compliment that a client paid you in the past can help you to remember that you're talented, you're good enough, and you know what you're doing!

Book Description:

In a "Bachelor" meets "Survivor"-style reality TV show, twelve women are flown to an undisclosed location to meet the eligible bachelor Ky, a former boy band member and the privileged son of an LA plastic surgeon. After arriving at a beautiful resort in Bali, the women compete for a chance at love as they fight to win Ky’s affection.

Morgan, the blunt, down-to-earth, girl next door; Harper, a wannabe Hollywood starlet who is competing not only for her fifteen minutes of fame but to win enough money for breast implants; and Brinkley, the innocent, Jesus-loving Midwesterner who believes that she and Ky are a match made in heaven, must go head-to-head with nine other women on group dates and in challenges to stay in the competition.

What happens behind the scenes when a dating reality show goes awry?

Book Excerpt:

Chapter 1

Harper sat sandwiched between what appeared to be two identical women. No, she wasn’t seeing double. She just happened to be at a casting call in West Hollywood where the typical women that fit the bill were blond, blue-eyed, and impressively tanned. Whether all of the above were real or fake was still to be determined.

Not like Harper was one to talk. Her long, honey blond hair came from a little friend called Clairol. But that was only a temporary fix until she could get back on her feet again and continue seeing her colorist, Avondre. He was known for making magic out of what was once mousy, drab-brown hair.

Her blue eyes really were her natural color. Only they happened to be enhanced just a smidge with nonprescription color contacts that she’d picked up at a gas station near her month-to-month rental apartment in the cheapest neighborhood she could find in Manhattan Beach.

And, yes, she was tan just like the rest of them. She spent every single afternoon lying at the beach. Not out of luxury but out of necessity. It seemed that the air-conditioner in her tiny, pre-furnished studio apartment was nothing more than a puff of lukewarm air that blew at random. Normally at 7 PM at night when the apartment had already cooled down after the sun had set.

So afternoons in her tiny shoebox of an apartment were unbearable, to say the least.

One of the she-clones to the right of Harper elbowed her in the ribs to get her attention. A little too hard, in her opinion. Harper looked up with a wide-eyed expression on her face that she had perfected after years of playing the victim to family, friends, and especially men in her life.

“Yes?”

The Glamazon hissed out of the side of her mouth, barely turning her head to acknowledge Harper’s existence. “Um, I’m pretty sure they’re calling your name.”

She tapped one perfectly manicured fingernail on the clipboard that sat in Harper’s lap. It held her lengthy application and background check, which were required to even be considered for the show in the first place. And at the top of the application, clear as day, read her name: ‘Harper Berry.’

Harper was suddenly all ears. A petite production assistant who was attractive in an edgy/emo kind of way scanned the room with a bored expression on her face. “This is the final call for Ms. Berry. Does anyone know if there is a Harper Berry here for casting?”

She didn’t want to seem too eager. Even though this was the moment she had waited four hours and thirty-five minutes for, not counting the insane traffic gridlock that had cost her fifty-five extra minutes on the way to the studio.

She stood up slowly. She smoothed her Size Three Genetic skinny jeans in charcoal gray and plastered a cheery, professional smile across her face that would have made her the perfect spokesperson for a toothpaste ad. “Here! I’m right here.”

She took three short steps across the lobby and held out her hand to the disinterested production assistant. In one swift motion, she pumped the malnourished assistant’s hand up and down and covered the ‘F’ on the Fucci knockoff label on her handbag with the other.

That was a move she did so often that it had become second nature. Any time she came across someone she needed to impress—whether it was an executive in the industry, an older, wealthy gentleman who wanted to wine her and dine her, or even a catty Kim Kardashian look-alike bitch that she bumped into on the boardwalk—Harper automatically hid the label on her faux-designer handbag so that it only read ‘ucci.’

As far as she could tell, ‘ucci’ translated the same in any language.

She followed the PA down a long corridor. She fixed her eyes on the back of what appeared to be an asymmetrical, nouveau Flock of Seagulls hairstyle. Was the 80’s comeback really that popular?

My Book Review:

Dating Reality TV fans, if you need a quick fix in between watching the next season of your favorite Reality TV show, then Adventure To Love is the book to read!

Author Bethany Ramos weaves an entertaining tale with a Bachelor-like dating theme with a Survivor twist, that keeps the reader following along as twelve women contestants vie for the love of Bachelor Ky, a former boy band member. Set in the remote Indonesian island location of Bali, the story follows the trials and tribulations and behind the scenes struggles of three of the women contestants: Morgan, Harper, and Brinkley, who each has her own purpose for going on the show. Ky and the contestants don't know what they signed up for when they began the four week competition, and when the show goes awry, through all the drama, struggles, and twists that occur, they learn to expect the unexpected, and even some valuable life lessons.

I have to admit that I am a Reality TV junkie. I love these types of shows especially my favorites, The Bachelor/Bachelorette, so I knew I was going to enjoy reading Adventure To Love, and I wasn't disappointed! This entertaining tale has a great mixture or romance, drama, adventure, humor, twists and turns that kept me easily engaged and wanting to know what was going to happen next! I really enjoyed that the storyline featured the different perspectives of the three main women competitors, their diversity was intriguing and reminded me of the various women contestants that have appeared on The Bachelor. I couldn't help but get drawn into the adventure with Morgan, Harper and Brinkley. This fast paced story is a lot of fun, the plot twists will keep you guessing, while the drama, adventure, humor and romance will fill your Reality TV craving until the next season of your favorite show returns.

As the two reconnect, their passion is hot enough to torch Aly’s judgment. But can she risk her future for a man who lives on the edge of destruction?

Book Excerpt:

Jared

What the hell was I doing?

Everything about this situation was wrong. Aly kneeling in front of me. Touching me. She was close, too close. I could taste her breath, and I kept catching hints of that fucking delicious coconut body wash I’d used last night. Somehow it smelled a thousand times better on her.

These urges constantly hit me, and I couldn’t help imagining what it’d be like to bury my nose in the haven behind her ear, to press my mouth at her jaw, to tangle my hands in her hair. Against my better judgment, which could so easily be called into question, anyway, I gave in. Took a little.

I was always so good at taking.

The strand of hair I tugged between my fingers was soft, like silk against my callused skin. The action should’ve been innocent enough. I remembered doing it often when we were children, just a small act of affection to let her know it was okay she was there. There was never anything more to it than that.

But I knew better now, knew it would stir the need I’d felt in the pit of my stomach since I found her backed against that wall last night, since she’d driven me half-mad in her kitchen this morning, since I’d stumbled into her apartment like the piece of trash I was tonight. Somehow she still found me worthy, kneeling in front of me as if I deserved even a scrap of the attention she gave me now.

With her head down, she attended to the wounds on my other hand. I allowed my gaze to fall, to trace the face I wanted to trace with my hands.

I didn’t think I’d ever felt intrigued by a girl before the way I was now, had never wanted to crawl inside someone’s mind to dig through her thoughts, to find out who she was. Why she was. Aly’s green eyes were both fierce and soft, her touch both intent and gentle. She was kind, yet she didn’t hesitate to call me out on my shit. She made me itch and squirm, made me want to run and want to stay.

She began taping up my second hand, forging this little truce between us, steadily sucking me deeper into a place I knew I shouldn’t go.

But I couldn’t stop it.

There was something about being alone with her in the seclusion of this apartment that I liked, like maybe we were sharing some kind of secret that no one else could touch.

A distorted sense of security.

For just a little while, I wanted to drift in the delusion.

I watched her as she worked. Every couple of seconds, she glanced up at me with those eyes that seemed to know more than they should.

Aly shifted closer. I attempted to scoot back without her noticing, but she tugged on my hand. “Would you hold still? You’re worse than a two-year-old,” she said.

Was she oblivious of what she was doing to me? Every time she moved, her chest brushed against my knees, and damn, if it wasn’t the greatest temptation I’d ever had to endure. Did she know how badly I wanted to touch her? To take a little more? Maybe take it all? My thoughts raced ahead, and I wondered what she’d do if I edged off the couch and laid her back on the floor. Would she stop me? Or would she allow me to feed off her compassion and goodness? Would she let me wreck her? Destroy her? Because that was the only thing I knew how to do.

I sucked in a breath and held it. No fucking way was I going there. Not with her, even if she was the only girl who’d ever made me feel like I had to have her. The first who’d ever made me want. That in itself was a pretty damned good reason to stay away from her.

That and the fact that she was Aly.

My Aly.

She sat back on her haunches. Her smile was soft when she looked up at me. “See? That wasn’t so bad, was it?”

“Thank you,” I said honestly, because it’d been a long time since anyone had taken care of me. It hurt to think of the last time someone had.

“You’re welcome.” Her voice was quiet, and she sat there, just staring at me, a lot like we had last night, although now things seemed completely different.

“You’d better get some rest. It’s really late,” I said. I’d lain flat out on the hard ground for hours while I let myself sober up to the point where I could at least get myself back to the apartment, and I hadn’t come crawling up the stairs until three in the morning.

“Yeah, you’d better, too.” She sounded a little disappointed.

Her delicate hands pressed into the couch on the outside of my legs as she helped herself to stand. This time her hair did brush against my chest. We both froze with the contact, and she looked down at me, her face three inches from mine. She hovered there, her eyes searching.

Motherfucking trigger.

I wet my lips and found my voice, although it was heavy with strain. “Please go to your room, Aly.”

Blinking, she nodded before she pushed herself the rest of the way up. She paused at her door, whispered, “Good night,” and then disappeared inside her bedroom.

Feeling Elephants

There’s an old adage about putting three men in a room with an elephant. The men are all standing around different parts of the elephant and they are blind folded, feeling the elephant. Poor elephant. But when asked what an elephant feels like, one guy describes the ear another guy describes the tail, and the last guy talks about the trunk. From their limited perception, their views are completely accurate.

It doesn’t matter if we’re talking about your view of your financial life, your relationships or your neighbor’s bathroom window (quit spying, dirty little bird). The point is that whatever YOU choose to see, either consciously or unconsciously, is exactly what it true for you. Let Mommy use an example.

In real estate, I often will see this exact scenario: two agents working in the same office, one is prospering and one is not. The one making bank will tell you the market is hot and buyers and sellers are all over the place. The one who is applying at Starbucks to help pay the bills, will tell you the market is horrible and his clients are crazy. They are in the same office and the same market but they are experiencing a completely different outcome. The tricky thing is, they are both right. Our perception paints our reality. Thus, we can only operate within the limits we see for ourselves. I looked out the window this morning and the sunrise was pink, but my pal in New York was talking on facebook about all the snow they were getting. These are real perceptions, but very different (and snow is cold). But beyond that, how many of our perceptions are only real because we ourselves have set silly limits that keep us boxed in some imaginary boundaries?

Is that really all the money you can earn?

Are you really unlovable?

Do I look fat in these jeans?

Well, do I?

These are the questions you have to ask yourself before assigning a limit to your greatness (and please get back to me on the jeans, because, um, they feel tight).

What if you woke up today and changed your perceptions to include unlimited abundance, harmonious relationships and all-you-can-eat shrimp? Wouldn’t you approach your day differently? Of course you would! You would make calls you normally put off, try things that might ordinarily scare you, and hey, all that shrimp will be yummy.

I perceive a world that is peaceful and loving. I perceive unlimited abundance. And I like wine.

See the world the way you want to see it, and watch how it changes.

Bear hugs,
T.

Book Description:

Meet Melissa Murphy: wine-drinking real estate agent who finds herself "accidentally" assuming the role of a spiritual blogger when her boyfriend leaves her for his yoga teacher. Can she keep her role secret while trying to win her man back? If the lying doesn't kill her, the poses might!

Profound insight on human nature delivered in what seems like a yoga book (it's not), a real estate book
(no way), but instead is a woman's fiction, humor tale that will keep readers smiling and longing for more.

Book Excerpt:

In two days I will be closing the biggest deal in two years. And in two months, I will have a birthday. I am ecstatic about the first one and suicidal about the second. A little about me: Previously, I spent eleven years in the retail industry, mostly squandering my paychecks on the employee discount. I like cute clothes. Eventually, though, I decided to get my real estate license. Five minutes later, the market crashed.

I am one of the lucky ones, though, because for one thing I live with my boyfriend, Ron, who has been around for several years now. OK, four years, eight months, and two days. How do I know this definite time frame? Because my mother reminds me weekly when we chat. I am certain she keeps a little calendar next to the phone entitled, How Long Since Melissa and Ron Have Been Dating Without Getting Married and Giving Me a Grandchild. And it’s not really a weekly chat as much as it is a guilt call, as in, if I don’t call her at least once a week she makes me feel even more guilty than she does about the fact I’ve not yet produced offspring for her viewing pleasure.

Now, about Ron: He’s a nice guy, really, and pretty cute, too. He’s nice in the sit-on-the-couch-with-a-beer-yelling-at-the-television-screen-when-his-team-is-losing kind of way. Oh, and he has become a bit of an Internet fiend lately. Always on the damn computer. Ron is the one who convinced me to get my real estate license. He said, “You’ve been selling clothes for years; I bet you’d be great at houses.” While Ron had the ability to see the big picture, I found it difficult to imagine that selling houses would be anything at all like working in the Women’s Fine Fashion Department of Haddock’s. After all, it isn’t like you can stand outside the dressing room while someone tries on a house. And customers get so agitated when they try to return a cardigan; what happens when it’s a condo?

Ron reminded me that with my own condo paid off (thanks to my father’s life insurance policy), and him covering the rest of our expenses (which is precisely how I donated so much of each paycheck to my special clothing and wine account) that living on commission would be a breeze, I would spend less on clothes (I knew he’d been snooping in my closet), and that when I did sell a house, it would be big money. So, I took the required classes online, passed the state exam, and suddenly found dozens of brokers pursuing me. OK, there were actually only two, but they both wanted me really badly. I choose Cal State Realty. Mostly because it’s close to my condo, and the broker reminds me of Sean Connery (without the accent).

My mother, of course, had a coronary over me giving up such a “promising” career as assistant department manager of such a “fine establishment” where she got to enjoy my employee discounts almost as much as I did.

“Oh, honey, I think it’s fine you got your real estate license, but you can’t be serious about quitting Haddock’s. There’s this cute little handbag I saw in the window last week—”

“Yes, Mom,” I say, cutting her off, but knowing exactly which handbag she’s referring to. “I’ve got enough saved, and of course I have Ron…” my words trail off as I consider what shoes I could wear with that damn purse.

“But I just read that the housing market is crashing. Things are going to get really bad.”

“I know, but really, I need a change, and I already have a deal in escrow. Do you realize the commission will be like four paychecks?”

My mother sits silent on the other end.

“Well, that was pretty easy,” she finally says, referring to the fact that I only took this nice couple out one time, wrote an offer that day, and did most of the paperwork in an hour or two.

“I know! Just imagine if I am not dead-dog tired from being on my feet all day, hanging up clothes and smiling at rude women.” And staying up drinking wine and eating ice cream from the container.

My Book Review:

If you like to read a book that is fun and full of laugh-out-loud moments, then Secrets of a Spiritual Guru is the book for you. Author Tamara Lee Dorris weaves an entertaining tale written in the first person narrative that follows the everyday trials and tribulations of real estate agent Melissa Murphy.

Melissa's world is turned upside down when Ron, her live-in boyfriend of four years, leaves her for Shanza, his yoga instructor. Determined to win Ron back, Melissa searches the internet to find information about Shanza's yoga studio, and discovers that Shanza is in need of a spiritual blogger, so Melissa applies for the position with no prior knowledge of yoga or any spirituality/enlightenment concepts. Can Melissa pull off the role as a yoga/spiritual guru and win back the heart of Ron, or will she be made out as a fraud if the truth comes out?

It was so much fun following Melissa as she overcomes challenges while trying to keep her personal and professional life on track. There is a nice balance of entertainment and spiritual concepts interwoven throughout the story. The reader is kept engaged as Melissa tackles the challenges in the real estate industry, learning and blogging about yoga and the variety of spirituality concepts, and her romantic issues with ex-boyfriend Ron. Melissa is a sassy and quirky lady that keeps the reader laughing with her witty humor and neurotic misadventures, it's easy for the reader to relate to the everyday life situations that she faced.

I really enjoyed the references to yoga and the spiritual teachings that were sprinkled throughout the book with a mixture of humor and real life examples. What more could a reader ask for then to be entertained and enlightened? This is a funny, insightful, refreshing and thoroughly enjoyable story that will leave a smile on your face.

Secrets of a Spiritual Guru is a delightful fast paced story that is chick lit at its very best. The only problem with the story is that the author leaves the reader wanting more with an open-ended conclusion that will be continued in the second book of the Guru Series.

There’s something about that hero…

I admit it, I love writing and reading about the stereotypical tall, dark, and handsome hero. I really don’t know why, but I always picture a hero that way in my mind. Is it because I imagine that type of man strong? Or is it just because that’s the type of man I’m most attracted to? Maybe it’s because a majority of the romance books I’ve read over the years feature a hero who is described as tall, dark, and handsome—maybe not in those simple terms, but in the overall description that is basically what you end up with.

Yep, I’m shrugging here. I really haven’t taken the time to analyze my reasoning, but I know as I read a book that is the picture that develops in my mind. Unless the author throws in a wrench and mentions he’s blond, or some other contradiction to the image in my head. lol

But I do have another trait that I love in a hero.

Come on, lean in closer and I’ll share…teehee.

I love when a hero has a sense of humor. He doesn’t have to be slap-stick funny, but just a bit of teasing humor, or the way he’ll say something to diffuse a heated discussion, or maybe turn an awkward moment into something comfortable and bearable for the heroine. I love it when a hero can do that.

In my latest release from Entangled Publishing titled Bachelor’s Specialsquee…—my hero Chet Castle is my perfect hero. You’d almost think I wrote him with me in mind…lol. Of course he’s tall, dark, and handsome, (picture me swooning here) but he’s also the proud owner of a wonderful sense of humor. And his heroine Jill is his equal, able to dish it out as well as take it. I love couples like that. They are fun to get to know and to travel with on their HEA journey.

How about you? What do you require in a hero? Tall, dark, and handsome with humor like me, or do you prefer your men blond, copper-haired, blue-eyed, stocky, lanky, arrogant, serious—or something else?

Book Description:

Jill Adgate wants three things from life: a successful catering business, a family, and the love of an exceptional man. What she has is no job, a mounting pile of bills, and her outspoken best friend—who sets her up on a blind date with the man who inadvertently ruined Jill’s life.

Chet Castle is a businessman who has everything, except the ability to trust. Burned by a money-hungry fiancée, he refuses to get involved in any relationship that has a shelf life longer than a head of lettuce.

Intrigued by her ambition—and determined to get her in bed—Chet offers Jill the chance of a lifetime: work as his live-in chef and he’ll help her get her catering business off the ground. When sparks fly in the kitchen, Jill realizes what’s cooking is a recipe for disaster…

Book Excerpt:

He tossed the towel on the counter. “I’m attracted to you, and after that zipper-popping kiss, I’m going to assume the feeling’s mutual.”

“That’s neither here nor there. I don’t mess around with someone I work with and definitely not someone I work for.” Jill jumped off the counter and pushed past him. She feared she’d combust from the friction of her heartbeat working against the rush of heated blood in her veins.

“I really don’t fall into either category. We don’t work together, and I’m far from your boss.” His voice held a tinge of humor laced with steel. “This is strictly a business arrangement.”

“That might be worse.”

He moved toward her. “Jill—”

“I’m tired of men assuming because I’m a woman, because of the way I look, that I’m open to a sexual relationship with them to get ahead.”

“What are you talking about? Who said anything about getting ahead?” He brushed his hand through his hair, confusion littering his face.

“Is this the payback you’re expecting? You offer to help me with my catering business, even so far as co-signing for a loan, and all I have to do is lay back, close my eyes, and grit my teeth while you have your way with me?”

A vein hammered along the side of his neck. “I seriously doubt you’ll be gritting your teeth, unless it’s to stop yourself from screaming my name.”

My Book Review:

What more could a reader ask for when a story has yummy food, a hunky brooding type of guy, and a steamy romance?

Jill Adgate is an up and coming chef who dreams about owning her own catering business.

Chet Castle is a handsome rich businessman who was burned in the past by a money hungry ex-fiancee. He doesn't believe in love, has trust issues, and doesn't want a long term relationship.

One night their paths cross when Jill is the chef in charge of Chet's grandmother's eightieth birthday dinner. With a falling birthday cake and a passionate kiss and embrace, Jill's life is quickly turned upside down, she's fired, blackballed within the local culinary industry, and left with a ruined reputation.

Fast forward one year later...

Jill is set up on a blind date with her best friend Mel's future brother-in-law, Chet Castle! After a year, the overwhelming attraction between them is still there. He has to see her again, nothing long term - that's not his style, he's gun-shy when it comes to relationships, but he's determined to get her in his bed. Feeling responsible for getting her fired from her chef's position a year ago, he offers a business arrangement: work two months as his in-house chef, and he'll help her get her catering business started. With no other options available to her, Jill agrees to the arrangement. But when the romantic sparks start to heat up in the kitchen, can they keep their relationship strictly professional?

Oh my goodness! I knew from the prologue that I was going to love reading Bachelor's Special. Author Christine Warner weaves a captivating steamy romantic tale filled with electricity, sexual tension, passionate romance, wit and humor.

I loved following Jill and Chet as their relationship developed from wary strangers who fight the attraction between them, to friends and finally lovers. The attraction between them is intense, it leaps off the pages with playful flirting and sexy banter, mixed with humorous dialogues and touching interactions. It's easy to become enthralled with this storyline: a cooking themed story, a commitment-phobe guy with trust issues, a sassy independent woman, a live-in business arrangement, a scheming ex-fiancee, and an unexpected twist ... what more could you ask for?

Bachelor's Special is an entertaining romantic tale with plenty of humor and fun, mixed with mouth-watering food and sizzling passion!
