Book Description:

In Napa Valley, he who has the best grapes wins. And in the pursuit of perfection, dreams and hearts can be crushed.

Sophia Stone is a widow on the brink of an empty nest, stuck in an unsatisfying job managing the vineyard for a mediocre Napa vintner. Faced with an uncertain future she wonders how do you choose between making a living and making a life? Between protecting your heart and sharing it? Five years ago, after her husband was killed in an accident, Sophia put her heart and dreams on ice to care for those around her. Now her home, her dreams, and her family’s legacy grapes are threatened by the greed of the new money moving into the Valley. Sophia has a choice—give up and let them take what is hers, or risk everything fighting a battle everyone says she can’t win.

Nico Treviani has one goal in life: make brilliant wine. A woman would be an unwanted distraction. So, while recognized as one of Napa’s premier vintners, Nico finds himself alone… until his brother’s death drops not one, but two women into his life—his thirteen-year-old twin nieces. In an instant, Nico gains a family and loses his best friend and partner in the winemaking business. Struggling to care for his nieces, Nico accepts a job as head winemaker for Avery Specter, one of the new-money crowd. And he learns the hard way that new money doesn’t stick to the old rules.

When Sophia Stone gets caught in the middle of Nico’s struggle to remain true to himself or sacrifice his convictions to make stellar wine, both Sophia and Nico are faced with a choice they never imagined. A choice that might extinguish the hope of a future neither expected.

Book Excerpt:

Chapter One

Sophia Stone knew life held few absolutes:  good wine is art, good Italian cooking is passion, a good child is a gift, and good news never comes in a certified letter.

“You sure this is for me, Tito?” she asked the postman who thrust an envelope toward her.  When she tilted her head she could read the word “Certified,” stamped in red like a guilty verdict across the front.

A heavy-set man, Tito had a ready smile and an easy, engaging manner. Each day while delivering mail, he also traversed the valley searching for tidbits of gossip with the zeal of an Army battalion scouring the countryside for insurgents.  St. Helena was a small community where the denizens believed mining each other’s business was an inalienable right granted on the theory that without the titillation everyone would fall over dead from boredom. “Yeah, looks like it’s from Charlie.  Certified, too.”  Tito didn’t have the decency to hide his interest as he mopped his face with a dirty handkerchief then stuffed it back into his rear pocket.  The wiping didn’t help—a sheen of sweat still covered his ruddy cheeks.  August had been hot with no break in sight.

Sophia eyed him.  She wouldn’t put it past him to have already steamed open the letter, a thought that made her a bit nauseous.  Why had she thought a small town in Napa Valley would be a good place to hide?

“From Charlie, you say?”  Keeping her hands in her pockets, Sophia tilted her head further and tried to double-check the sender’s address.  Then she looked him in the eye.  “Any idea what it’s about?”

Tito looked like a bully when his bluff was called.  He shrugged—an exaggerated movement that seemed like the shifting of a mountain—but a noncommittal answer, leaving Sophia certain whatever was in that letter would be spread around the valley and germinating in imaginations as rapidly as seeds on a spring wind.

At an impasse, Sophia and Tito stood there, the letter between them, Sophia delaying the inevitable.  Unfortunately, with a dinner to cook and a cake in the oven, Sophia didn’t have time to see if she could outlast him.  So, with a sour downturn to her mouth and a knot in her stomach, Sophia took the letter.

Tito motioned for her to flip the envelope over.  “There on the back, that green card?  You need to sign that.”  Handing her a pen, he waited for her to sign, then tore off the return receipt, pocketing it.

Confirming the return address, Sophia gave him a distracted wave as he climbed back into his truck.  “Thanks, Tito.” A perfunctory nicety.

“Sure thing, Ms. Stone.”  In a shower of gravel, he gunned the mail truck back through the vineyard down the winding driveway leading to the valley floor.  Sophia glanced up as the trees enveloped him and her normal quiet smothered the sound, wiping away all vestiges of his presence.

Except for the letter.

From her landlord.

At least the return address was his—and Sophia was certain he hadn’t moved from the corner lot at the bottom of her hill.  She could probably throw a bottle and hit his roof, with a little help from the wind

Charlie had owned this patch of five acres on the top of Howell Mountain since his parents had died in a small plane heading up from L.A. over thirty years ago.  Sophia had lived here for fifteen of those years and, through feast and famine, the ups and downs of the wine industry, she’d never received a certified letter from Charlie.  In fact, she couldn’t remember having received any letter from Charlie.  Their business dealings were usually hammered out at the kitchen table over a bottle of wine and sealed with a handshake.  Napa Valley was a handshake kind of place.

Sophia reached up and rubbed the worn piece of iron Daniel had nailed to one of the porch supports.  Tocco Ferro.  Her family had been steeped in the ways of the Old Country; her husband had become a believer.  Touch iron to ward off bad luck.   Being a bit too pragmatic, Sophia didn’t necessarily believe, but it couldn’t hurt.  God knew she’d had enough rough patches.  With a finger, she traced the initials the four of them had carved in the porch support.  Time had whittled their number to one … almost.

Tapping the white legal-sized envelope on her open palm, she squinted against the sun as she looked out over her small patch of heaven.  A rolling hillside with a couple of acres under vine, grapes from the Old Country, grafts of her grandfather’s original vines.   A small garden flanked the house.  Her own private retreat sheltered from prying eyes by a ring of trees.

The farmhouse had been billed as a “fixer-upper.”  She and Daniel had packed up the kids, moving up valley from the Bay Area, and spent the next several years making the remnants of a house into a home.  They’d bribed the kids into helping by letting them paint their own rooms.  Dani had picked pink, hot pink.  As if the view from his window wasn’t enough, Trey had chosen wood paneling and a bucolic scene of vineyards on one wall.  When he’d moved away for college, Sophia hadn’t had the heart to change it.  Perhaps she’d harbored the hope that he would come home someday.  He hadn’t.  Now Dani was poised to fly.

Soon Sophia would be alone, the house emptied of youthful buoyancy.  The prospect filled her with dread.  Stripped of purpose, she half-feared she would grow brittle like the old vines until the weight of loneliness shattered her into bits and pieces of who she used to be.  When Daniel had been killed, she’d had the kids.  Now the false friend of sadness stayed ever near, her house echoing with memories.  But memories didn’t make a life any more than the past made a future.  However, the past was her tether.  Without it, Sophia felt she would float away like a balloon loosed to the sky, growing ever smaller until vanishing from sight.

While the house cradled her past, the rows of vines just reaching their peak marching down the hill across her two acres held her dreams.  Her grapes, started from grafts from her grandfather’s stock back in Italy, each juice-filled orb bursting with hope, with promise.  Her life’s work hanging on the verge of a promise.

Through the screen door, the aroma of a cake on the verge of disaster wafted into Sophia’s consciousness, and she turned and bolted for the kitchen, the screen clattering shut behind her.  With a dishrag to protect her hand, she opened the oven.  The smell of chocolate carried on billows of steam engulfed her.  She waved it away, squinting through the heat.  She deposited the cake pan on the stainless steel countertop.  Pressing her thumb lightly on the cake, she let out her breath in a long rush.  Just in time.

Her mother loved chocolate cake.  Sophia planned to visit her this afternoon.  Perhaps a peace offering would soften her harsh moods of late.

Sophia spied the letter, pristine white and accusing, laying casually on the sideboard where she had tossed it in her haste.  Without further thought, she stuffed it in the old cookie jar on the countertop and crammed on the lid.  That cookie jar held a lifetime of happiness and heartache—her marriage license, the kids’ birth certificates, Daniel’s death certificate and obituary—it could handle the letter as well.  Whatever problem lurked inside that envelope, it could wait.

Leaving the cake to cool, Sophia strode through the door to the porch, pushing through the screen and down the steps.  The grapes, fragrant in the midday sun, neared perfection—harvest a few days away, at best.  Sophia had plans for those grapes, unique varietals that would make unusual yet palatable wine … if she could just figure out the last piece.  She was close, though, closer than ever before.  Grapes—creating them, growing them, cajoling them to trust her—they were her true passion.  Unfortunately dreams didn’t pay the bills, as her mother never missed a chance to bludgeon her with that little bit or ironic reality.  So Sophia had to sell her skills to pay the bills and now found her days consumed with tending to grapes owned by Pinkman Vineyards, one of the vast commercial operations in the valley, that turned her carefully nurtured grapes into mediocre table wine.

She walked the rows testing the scent once more—the perfume of near perfection as her grandfather called the sweetness of grapes.  Memories filtered through the shadows of time like wraiths, translucent, elusive … fleeting.  When she quieted, stilled her mind and opened her heart, Sophia could hear his voice, rich and deep, his laugh, and smell the scent of earth and sun that clung to him, the wine on his breath.  But, she couldn’t see him anymore.  Like sun on paper, time had weathered and faded her mental pictures until only shadows remained, as if the present was slowly erasing the past.

Worry dogged her, the letter and its unknown message on her mind as she tended to each vine, brushing back the canopy, weighing the clusters.  This far along in the season not much remained to do; nature would run her course.  This year Sophia had planted wildflowers and grasses under the vines to entice the bugs and keep them off the fruit.  The plan had worked well, as had her choice to prune more aggressively than normal this past winter. Under her care, her grandfather’s grapes flourished, and just now they were beginning to trust her, to give her their best.

This year’s wine had the potential to be the stuff of dreams.

At the far end of her property movement across the fence caught Sophia’s attention. Shading her eyes with one hand, she still had to squint against the assault of the sun.  Her next-door neighbors had sold their property recently to Specter Wines, a new player with new money.  Scuttlebutt had it the owner had made a mint somewhere back east.  Sophia shook her head as she watched heavy equipment struggle to tame the hillside, prepare it for planting.  These days it seemed just about every rich guy wanted a piece of Napa to cultivate his own grapes, make a signature vintage that would rock the world.

As if it was that easy.

My Book Review:

In Crushed, the first book in The Heart of Napa Series, author Deborah Coonts weaves a wonderful romance tale that transports the reader to Napa Valley, the home of California's lush wine country.

Sophia Stone is a widow who manages a local Napa vineyard, but she dreams of making her own wine. Life poses serious challenges for Sophia when her family is given a thirty day eviction notice from their home, threatening to take away her family legacy and her dreams.

Nico Treviani is a head winemaker at a local vineyard, and just like Sophia, he too dreams of making fabulous wines, but he has his own struggles in life that threatens to dash his dreams.

When Sophia and Nico get caught in the middle of the rivalry and greedy new money muscling their way ruthlessly into the Napa Valley vineyard community, will their dreams of making stellar wines and finding love be crushed?

Crushed is an intriguing romance story about two complex people with complicated life issues that threaten their dreams and chances at finding unexpected love. Author Deborah Coonts provides the reader with a smooth flowing and richly descriptive story that centers around the beautiful Napa Valley vineyards. I couldn't help but get drawn into Sophia and Nico's story, and cheer them on as their relationship blossomed amidst the challenges, tension, misunderstandings, and strife caused by the rival new-money vineyard owners. I look forward to reading the next installments of this series.

Crushed is a wonderful story that cleverly intertwines romance and wine, what could be better?!

About The Author

My mother tells me I was born in Texas a very long time ago, but I’m not so sure—my mother can’t be trusted. She’ll also tell you I was a born storyteller. That I believe—I have the detention notices and bad-conduct reports to prove it. However, the path from minor hyperbolist, or as I prefer to think of my former self, Grand Master of the Art of Self-Prevarication, to the author of the New York Times Notable Crime Novel and double Rita ™ finalist, Wanna Get Lucky?, the book that launched the bestselling series, was a bit tortured.

Someone once told me I lived a peripatetic life—yes, I had to look it up. And he was right. I’ve been everything from a mom, business owner, accountant, wife, pilot, flight instructor, lawyer …worse, a tax lawyer… to a writer. The three personas I’ve kept suit me the best: mom, flight instructor, and writer. And the other personas I’ve tried on then shrugged out of and discarded like an itchy coat were great grist for the story mill.

Chasing stories keeps me busy and out of jail…for the most part. Researching in Vegas can be a bit… sketchy.

Prodded by the next adventure and the police, I keep moving. Right now I have a house in Texas, but that will change soon. I lived in Vegas for 15 years—the longest I’d stayed anywhere. And I get back there often. But other places, too, are calling.

Someone asked me the other day where I lived. The question stopped me cold. Finally I said, “On Southwest Airlines, third row, window seat, either side.” Always in search of a story. And the adventure would be perfect if they could just stock a split of nice Champagne.

Dare To Love by S.B. Alexander (Author Interview / Book Review)

In association with JKS Communications, Jersey Girl Book Reviews is pleased to host the virtual book review promo for Dare to Love by Author S.B. Alexander!

Author Interview

Welcome to Jersey Girl Book Reviews, S.B!

How did the Maxwell Series begin?

The series was born out of my love for baseball, family and experiences in my life that have challenged me and shaped me into who I am today.

What will fans of Dare to Kiss and Dare to Dream like about Dare to Love?

Dare to Love is based on Kelton Maxwell, brother to Kade, Kross and Kody. Out of the four brothers Kelton is quite cocky, brash, infallible and doesn’t think before he acts. He’s funny, sexy and always keeps his family and his values in the forefront. Fans who’ve read the series so far have a love/hate relationship with Kelton, and they’ll love getting in his head and will be surprised at some of the choices he makes.

Dare to Love steps away from the lives of Kade Maxwell and Lacey Robinson, whose dramatic love story dominated the pages of Dare to Kiss and Dare to Dream. Was it your intention from the beginning to expand on the stories of other characters in the series?

The series is all about family and growing from tragedy. The main characters in the series have all been affected by something heartbreaking. From that, I want to take readers on a journey into each of their lives to show how they change and grow, how they help others and at the same time, how they overcome their issues to set a path in life.

You inserted a piece of your personal life, your experience with PTSD, into Dare to Kiss and Dare to Dream. Did any elements of your life sneak into Dare to Love?

The series itself has a lot of elements that I had and didn’t have growing up. And in Dare to Love, I didn’t have a cohesive family unit around me. I didn’t have parents who were open to love, which made it difficult for me to express emotions, and if I did, I always seemed to have gotten hurt by love.

After writing two Young Adult books, what inspired you to write New Adult fiction, and how was writing this genre different?

As a writer, when I’m drafting an outline for a story, I don’t think too much about the genre. I let the story unfold. But in both genres the characters are learning life in different states of their pre-teen, teenage or college age years. What I find different in one genre over the other is the character’s decision making. They might’ve learned from an experience in high school, but when faced with that same experience in college how will they react? Will they make the same decision or will they take a different path?

How do you balance your time between working full time and writing on the side?

I set a weekly goal for writing, and in between all the daily stuff I have going on, I write. I usually accomplish the goal I set, and if I don’t I make up for it somehow in the following week.

What’s next for you?

I still have planned three more books in the Maxwell Series, and the next one will be based on Kross Maxwell, the next triplet. However, I have a new series I’m outlining that will be based on a family that is not as cohesive as the Maxwell family. This new series will be a little darker and will have elements of mystery, romance and suspense. On top of that, I’m working on my fourth book in my vampire series.

Thank you, S.B., for visiting Jersey Girl Book Reviews, and sharing with us a bit about yourself and your writing career.

Book Description:

Sexy, confident, college playboy, Kelton Maxwell has his future right in the palm of his hands. Women want him. Guys want to be him. And he’s got one foot in the door at Harvard Law. He won’t dare to get close

Won’t dare to let her in.

Can’t dare to love.

My Book Review:

In the third book of The Maxwell Series, Dare to Love, author S.B. Alexander weaves a compelling new adult novel that easily draws the reader into triplet brother Kelton Maxwell's story.

Dare to Love is an emotional story that has a great mixture of drama, romance, suspense, and humor. Kelton Maxwell is a senior at Boston University and has aspirations of entering Harvard Law. He's a college playboy who does nude modeling for a college art class, he loves the adrenaline rush and attention from the ladies, but he doesn't do love, and isn't willing to commit. He vows to stay away from women who want more than he can give, his heart and a life of forever. He doesn't do forever, and he won't open his heart to anyone, especially after experiencing traumatic family events from the past. But there is one girl that he can't let go of, Elizabeth "Lizzie" Reardon, his old childhood best friend and teenage girlfriend who left him with a broken heart seven years ago. That is until the past unexpectedly walks back into his life, but Lizzie has her own personal reasons for being in Boston and internal demons to chase .... can Kelton open his heart to Lizzie and once again dare to love, even if it comes with danger?

Kelton and Lizzie's story is interwoven with enough drama, romance, and intrigue that easily kept me engaged and turning the pages. They are both broken but strong people who are dealing with a shared history and troubled pasts. As they reconnect, their relationship develops with enough angst, sizzling chemistry and sexual tension, witty banter, and a sweet romance that makes their reunion exciting enough to heal old wounds, and open their heart to a second chance at love. I would be remiss if I didn't mention that I loved the Maxwell brothers, these fun loving bad boys stole my heart, I can't wait to read more about them in the next books in The Maxwell Series!

If you are a fan of New Adult romance novels, Dare to Love is an enjoyable story that will leave you wanting more from the Maxwell brothers!

Book Description:

Harper Duquaine is back for another season of fantasy football! This time she’s a year wiser and prepared to dominate the league. But while she finally seems to have her fantasy life in order, reality proves more challenging.

Her plans to peacefully play house with her boyfriend come to a halt when the high school suddenly names Brook its head football coach. The promotion comes with more responsibility on the field and less time at home. It also unexpectedly means more work for Harper, who already has her hands full helping a friend pull off the perfect proposal (while dodging questions about when she and Brook are going to get hitched already). Plus, a new development at work could leave her—and half of the fantasy league—jobless.

With the complications of her career and being “Mrs. Coach” adding up, Harper wonders if she’s committed to the life she’s already building or if there is something else out there.

Book Excerpt:

With one day to go until our fantasy draft, I have a lot of prep work to do.

Last year I joined the league a few hours before the draft. My education had been a crash course from Wade on how to use the computer program and a few tips from my brother. I didn’t care at the time. I wasn’t in the league to win. I only joined in a desperate attempt to make my new co-workers at the car dealership like me. By the end of the season, my interest in the game—and Brook—had been piqued. I’d been willing to fight hard for a victory with both.

Winning Brook’s heart had been easier than winning the league championship. Even after a major late-season rally, I finished in fourth place.

Not this year. I’ve spent the off-season studying the game and planning. And I’m determined to go all the way. Even if that means humiliating the man I love when we go head-to-head against each other. The worthy, but humble, opponent he is, I’m sure Brook will ultimately forgive me when I hoist the figurative league trophy over my head. Unlike last year, I have a legitimate game plan. It’s called, “Study Up On All of the Top Players and Draft Them.” Subtitle: “Within Reason.” I still don’t feel right about having bad boys or total douches on my team, but I’ve made my peace. You have to make tough decisions like that when you’re in charge.

I plan to stock up on top-tier wide receivers and tight ends. In our league, we get points for each catch, which means I need players with good hands. Hands not unlike my ex-wide receiver boyfriend, only I put his hands to a much different, but equally important, use.

The other part, which is slightly more controversial, is my intent to plan one bad week. Theoretically, during one week—in my plans it’s week eight—I’ll have several of my top players out on bye weeks. That means I’ll likely lose, which should suck. I’ll have a total juggernaut team every other week of the season, so it won’t matter if I take a knee once.

In preparation for implementation, I’ve done a few mock drafts online. Okay, I’ve done ten, but I really want to get all of the jitters out of me before the real thing. While it’s been interesting to watch some of the trends going in these fake draft rooms—it seems like we’re in another year of the overrated running back—I’m not going to let that influence the way I pick my team. I have a wish list, and I don’t plan to stray far from it. We’re a ten-person league this year, so I’ve done a mock draft from each spot in a ten-person league. I have a good idea of who will and won’t make it on my team no matter when I draft. It’s comforting to feel this in control of my destiny.

My Book Review:

In Going For Two, the second book in the Queen of the League Series, author Laura Chapman weaves an entertaining chick lit tale that continues the trials and tribulations of Harper Duquaine as she tries to balance home, romance, and work issues, while delving into the second year of the competitive world of fantasy football leagues.

Author Laura Chapman takes her personal passion for fantasy football leagues and creates a hilarious chick lit series with a football theme. She weaves a sassy tale full of humor and drama that easily draws the reader into the continuation of Harper's story as she tries to try juggle the challenges in her life with the fierce competitiveness of fantasy football leagues.

In Going For Two, the focus is on how Harper deals with the challenges of everyday life issues, especially in her relationship with boyfriend Brook, while the fantasy football league takes a back seat. I really enjoyed the switch in the storyline as the drama of everyday life issues that Harper struggled with are realistic and easy to relate to. But I couldn't help but snicker as Harper did her homework for the new season of fantasy football, as I too prepare to take down the opposition every season in my various sports fantasy leagues.

Going For Two is an exciting and fast paced story that flows smoothly and easily keeps the reader turning the pages. Author Laura Chapman sure knows how to weave an enjoyable series that keeps her readers in stitches. You can't help but get caught up in Harper's roller coaster ride of a life full of drama and sweet romance, it's simply delightful!

Missy Horman escaped an abusive marriage and returns to Snow Valley to help her father deal with her emotionally disturbed mother. Volunteering to teach a youth Sunday school class seems like a good way to get out of her comfort zone—until she ends up kissing Porter Wilson in front of a bunch of teenagers. Embarrassed, and secretly thrilled, by the kiss, she writes Porter off as a playboy. But, Missy wasn't the only one affected and Porter's new mission in life is to prove that there's more to him than flirting and world-tilting kisses. He wants to show her that a true cowboy knows how to treat a lady and, if Missy can't keep her wits about her, she might just let him.

The Bet, Taylor Hart

When Destiny Morningstar gets blackmailed into spending her spring break in Snow Valley, the last thing she’s looking for is a date, especially not with Adam and Chase Moon—two attractive and athletic brothers. But soon she finds herself tangled up in a dating spree that includes a flag football game, swinging around the barn dance, and hiking to Snow Valley's romantic hot springs with the town's most eligible bachelors. At every turn she's within kissing distance of one of the delectable Moon men. When she discovers she’s been part of some bet fueled by sibling rivalry and overactive egos she has to make a decision—forgive them both or miss out on the best thing that’s ever happened to her.

Sealed with a Kiss, Kimberley Montpetit

Jessica Mason and Pastor James are struggling to make their long-distance relationship work between Snow Valley and New Orleans where Jessica dances with the local ballet company. When April Murphy, a war widow with a child, shows up in Snow Valley, James reluctantly begins to wonder if he and Jessica are really meant to be. April would make the perfect pastor’s wife and he’d have an instant family and the stability he craves. But he can’t get the spitfire Jessica out of his mind and when she returns to Snow Valley to accept an inheritance, her male ballet partner in tow, the love triangle takes on a new edge. Can Jessica and James figure out how to create a family while living in two different states—or do they allow their hearts to move on and forget the passion they once shared?

Romancing a Husband, Lucy McConnell

Natalie Lawson is at a crossroads. Her husband is down on his luck and some days he’s just plain down while Natalie is moving forward, gaining promotions and starting new adventures. In some ways, they’ve grown apart and Natalie can’t help but wonder if her path through life will always include Eli. When tragedy throws them together, Natalie learns a profound lesson that may save her marriage and provide the key to romancing a husband.

Book Description:

When newly-single party girl Vicki moved to Paris, she was hoping to indulge in wine, stuff her face with croissants, and fall in love. It proved to be much more difficile than she'd imagined. In this laugh-out-loud memoir, this cheeky storyteller recounts the highs and lows of her life in the City of Light. Sassy and shamefully honest, Vicki makes you feel as if you're right there in Paris stumbling along the cobblestones with her.

Will she find love? Will she learn to consume reasonable amounts of alcohol? Will the French administration ever cut her a break?

Book Excerpt:

Parisian bakeries are world-famous for being awesome. French women are world-famous for being skinny. The two must have never met because I don’t see how these women stay so svelte when there are thousands of calories staring them in the face.
And boulangeries are more prolific in Paris than Starbucks are in the United States. On a stroll to the post office (they have an absurd amount of those, too) it’s not uncommon to pass three or four bakeries. How on earth can you resist?
With time I’ve mellowed and am usually able to escape with just one carb-laden item. But in the beginning, I had to peel my face away from the glass as the boulangère called, “Client suivant!” Next!
“Une baguette, s’il vous plaît.” A baguette was mandatory so that I could make a sandwich or spread some cheese on it or carry it around town to look like a local. To go with it I could order a croissant or a pain au chocolat (which is like a croissant but with chocolate running through it) or a suisse au chocolat (which is like a pain au chocolat with some creamy, wonderful, artery-clogging substance running through it). It was the toughest choice of my day.
The baker interrupted my thoughts. “Avec ceci?”
To my not-yet-fluent ears, it sounded like “Avec soucis?” “With worries?” I guess it’s a weird take on the Australian “No worries” phrase. Glad that the baker had no worries about my baguette, I ordered a croissant, too. The baker gave me an odd look but that was nothing new—it happened nearly every time I spoke French. I paid and went on my way. Not the smoothest of transactions, but I had warm, buttery, gluten-y products in my hands. All was good.
Later that night, I stopped in at Ammo’s bar. Sipping the froth off the top of my beer, I asked, “So what’s with the bakers here saying ‘avec soucis’? Is it some Australian thing?”
By the blank stare on her face, I knew I had said something stupid. “Avec SOO-see, you’re saying? Ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha!”
That was maybe one “ha” too many. I got it. I must have been wrong about something. But what?
“They’re saying ‘avec SUH-see’, you know, like ‘Anything else with that?’”
Oh. Ohhhhh. Ohhhhhhhhhhhh. Now it made sense. And now I realized just how dumb I had looked. Not only did I brush off their “Anything else?” question, but I’d replied by ordering something else. Why haven’t these people kicked me out of their country yet?
The best I could do is learn from it and do better next time. I’d have to get used to embarrassing myself until I mastered the language.
Ready for another drink, I asked Anne Marie for a pint of lager. “Avec SOO-see?” she replied.

Well played.

Praise for the Book:

I also look forward to any other books that Melissa has to offer. This is my second one by her and I have liked them both a lot. This is a very entertaining book about pursuing your dreams. I really enjoyed reading the book and am actually looking forward to a possible sequel. I enjoyed reading See You Soon Broadway. In fact, I finished it in two days; I could hardly put it down. This is the first book that I have read by this author, but it will not be the last. If you enjoy reading sweet romance, then definitely pick this up!

Book Excerpt:

“What are you guys up to?” I ask. My mom and Cassie are busily looking through some boxes. “Hi, hon. Dad was cleaning out the garage and found these boxes,” Mom replies. She continues to empty some junk from a box onto the table. “Mom and Dad are finally cleaning out their stuff. I told them that they need to feng shui,” Cassie says softly. Cassie just opened her own yoga studio; she’s probably the most calm and mentally sound person I have ever met in my life. I have thought about talking to her about the possibility of me moving to New York, but I’m a little nervous about what she’s going to say. “Maris, do you remember this? We used to play restaurant with this old menu.” Cassie holds up a menu that we stole from IHOP in the 80s. We used to play restaurant in Mom’s Tupperware closet for hours. “I can’t believe we still have that thing,” I exclaim. Although, I’m not surprised since Mom and Dad never throw anything away. “I’m keeping this for my kids,” Cassie adds. Ugh, typical Cassie—she may be calm and patient but she will always be the bossy older sister. She thinks she knows everything just because she’s a whopping three years older than me. “Um, why do you get to keep it and you don’t even have kids yet?” I demand. She doesn’t say anything; no doubt she is chanting some kind of yoga stuff in her mind to ease the tension that’s building. “You’re right,” she replies calmly. “We should share this once we both have kids, of course.” I guess I can’t really argue with her considering she’s definitely closer to having kids than I am. I start looking through a box that’s on the floor. It looks like a bunch of old stuff that belonged to my grandmother. Grandma passed away two years ago and my parents got the remainder of her things. I sort through the box of romance novels, crossword puzzles, and National Geographics from thirty years ago. As I’m sorting through the stuff, I find a red leather-bound notebook at the bottom of the box. My curiosity is building as I run my fingers over the gorgeous worn leather. I open it to the first page and immediately recognize my grandmother’s handwriting. The first page is dated March 10, 1948 . . .
