Book Description:

For thirty-something blogger Cora Chevalier, small-town Indigo Gap, North Carolina, seems like the perfect place to reinvent her life. Shedding a stressful past as a counselor for a women’s shelter, Cora is pouring all her talents—and most of her savings—into a craft retreat business, with help from close pal and resident potter Jane Starr. Between transforming her Victorian estate into a crafter’s paradise and babysitting Jane’s daughter, the new entrepreneur has no time for distractions. Especially rumors about the murder of a local school librarian . . .

But when Jane’s fingerprints match those found at the grisly crime scene, Cora not only worries about her friend, but her own reputation. With angry townsfolk eager for justice and both Jane’s innocence and the retreat at risk, she must rely on her creative chops to unlace the truth behind the beloved librarian’s disturbing demise. Because if the killer’s patterns aren’t pinned, Cora’s handiwork could end up in stitches . . .

My Book Review:

In Death Among The Doilies, the first book in the Cora Crafts Mystery series, author Mollie Cox Bryan weaves an intriguing cozy mystery tale with a craft theme twist that follows the amateur sleuth adventures of craft blogger / craft retreat owner Cora Chevalier, as she tries to prove the innocence of her best friend, potter Jane Starr, who has become a person of interest in the suspicious death of Sarah Waters, the local beloved librarian.

Cora was a counselor at a women's shelter in her hometown of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. She began her blog, Cora Crafts a Life, blogging about her life as a counselor and crafter, as a creative and therapeutic outlet. But when the stress of her counseling job led to a severe panic disorder, Cora made a major life change by turning her successful money-making blog into a craft retreat business in the small mountain western North Carolina town of Indigo Gap. Cora bought the Kildare House, a Victorian estate built in 1892, and transformed it into a crafter's retreat. Best friend Jane Starr, a potter with a past history of spousal abuse and her five year old daughter London, moved with Cora as a business partner also looking to start her life anew. Cora and Jane inherited elderly renter, Ruby O'Malley, a herbalist, who came with the sale of the estate. Just a few days away from the opening of the crafter's retreat, Jane is suspected of murdering local librarian Sarah Waters. Concern for her best friend and their new business leads Cora to embark on an amateur investigative adventure to clear Jane's name and save their new business.

Death Among The Doilies is an intriguing whodunit tale with a craft theme that easily peaked my interest. This entertaining tale has enough quirky characters, witty banter and humor, drama, secrets, and surprising twists and turns, that will easily keep you guessing the identity of the murderer. You can't help but get caught up in the drama and calamity that ensues as Cora tries to solve the murder and prove Jane's innocence. Cora's amateur investigative adventure unfolds with a wonderful balance of comedy, drama, suspense, and a touch of romance that easily left me wanting more. As a crafter, I really enjoyed reading this cozy mystery, especially the backstories into Cora, Jane, and Ruby's lives; and I loved that the author included instructions for a variety of crafts and recipes at the end of the book.

I would be remiss if I didn't mention how much I really enjoyed the author's rich description of the Appalachian Mountain town of Indigo Gap in western North Carolina and it's colorful townsfolk. The author transports the reader into the quaint small town filled with cobblestone streets, beautiful historical homes and businesses, and a tradition of craft artisans, historians, and antique collectors. The wonderful description of this rustic small town deep in the mountains will make the reader want to visit Indigo Gap and attend a crafter's retreat weekend.

Death Among The Doilies is an entertaining cozy murder mystery that will engage you to join in the crazy adventures and trials and tribulations that occur in Indigo Gap, while providing you with a nice dose of southern charm and humor.

Book Description:

Poring over a dusty hatbox of photographs in her grandmother’s closet, Emily Prentice is shocked to discover her father was married to his high school sweetheart before meeting her mother.

In the summer of 1968, Jack and Libbie fall in love under the spell of their small town, untouched by the chaos of the late sixties. Though Libbie’s well-to-do parents disapprove of Jack’s humble family and his aspiration to become a mechanic, she marries Jack a year after they graduate high school. But soon their happiness crumbles as Libbie’s mental state unravels and she is drawn to alcohol and drugs. Despite his efforts to help her, Jack loses the woman he loves and is forced to move on with his life.

Now that Emily’s mother has passed away, Jack is alone again, and Emily grows obsessed with the beautiful woman who had given her father such joy. Determined to find Libbie, Emily pieces together the couple’s fragmented past. But is it too late for happy endings?

My Book Review:

Finding Libbie is a poignant tale of love found, love lost, heartache, and a trail of memories that will captivate your heart and soul. The author weaves a beautiful and dramatic tale that follows Jack and Libbie's love story.

The story opens up with Emily Prentice discovering a hatbox of photographs of her father Jack with a young woman named Libbie. Unbeknownst to Emily, Jack and Libbie had been high school sweethearts who got married in 1968, but their short-lived marriage only lasted until the early 1970s. This touching love story takes the reader along on Jack and Libbie's emotional memory woven journey, it will draw you into their lives and will pull at your heartstrings. The author's descriptive writing style is phenomenal, she simply captivates your imagination and engages you to come along on the emotional roller coaster ride that is Jack and Libbie's love story, and then she brings you back to the present when Emily embarks on a search to find Libbie.

The author has created an intriguing cast of characters who are realistic and complex people that the reader can relate to. Their engaging personalities grab a hold of you with dialogues and interactions that leap off the pages. The emotions and passion between Jack and Libbie are palpable, you can't help but feel for them as they deal with personal demons and relationship issues. Libbie's struggle with mental illness and addiction is simply heart wrenching especially for Jack who loves her so much, author Deanna Lynn Sletten sure knows how to draw out the emotions from her readers! This emotionally charged story is one that everyone who believes in love should read, it is a powerfully compelling story that will leave you wanting more. I could easily see this novel as a Lifetime Channel movie.

Finding Libbie is a beautiful story of a couple's lost love through old memories and a painful past brought to the surface by a loving daughter who wants to help her father find love and happiness again. This love story is one for the ages, it will resonate with you long after the last word has been read.

Meet the Animals of Kathi Daley Books

One of the reasons that writing cozy mysteries is such a good fit for me is because I LOVE animals. I mean I really love them. I can’t imagine a life or a book without at least one four legged character.

While my series differ one to the next somewhat in terms of setting and characters, the one consistency that runs through all five, are the pets.

Zoe from my Zoe Donovan Series has a best friend named Charlie. Charlie is a Tibetan terrier who goes everywhere with Zoe including the wild and domestic animal rescue and rehabilitation shelter she owns. Zoe also owns two cats, Marlow and Spade, and in later books she has adopted a Newfoundland named Bella, a lab named Digger, and an assortment of additional cats. Since Zoe works with both wild and domestic animals there are a lot of animals in the series including bears, cougars, baby otters, and raccoons.

Charlie

Spade

Marlow

Cait, from my Whales and Tails Island Mystery Series, has a dog named Max. In addition to working at the bookstore she owns, Coffee Cat Books, she helps her aunt run the Harthaven Cat Sanctuary.  Cait is visited in every story by a very clever cat who helps her solve the crime. I guess it wouldn’t be a stretch to say that these cats are magical cats, although they don’t talk or fly or anything. It is more that they will scratch at the exact spot on the wall where something is hidden, or knock a book off a shelf that provides a key clue to solving the mystery.

Max

Ebenezer

Sydney

Kailani from the Sand and Sea Hawaiian Mystery series has a lab named Sandy. Lani is a lifeguard and she rescued Sandy who was found swimming way off shore when he was a puppy.

Sandy

And Alyson from my Seacliff High Teen Mystery Series has a shepherd named Tucker. Tucker is a natural guard dog who has gotten Alyson out of more than one sticky situation.

Tucker

And last but not least, Tj from the Paradise Lake Series owns a search and rescue dog, named Echo who is based on my real life dog Echo. Don’t they look alike? A lot of people who see Book Echo on the cover of the books assume it is the real life Echo since they look so similar. Book Echo has saved Tj’s life on occasion while real life Echo as found a calling as a writers (that would be me) assistant.

Book Echo

Real Echo

And so there you have the pets of Kathi Daley Books. Each has a unique way of contributing to the story that I hope you will all enjoy.

Book Description:

Between volunteering for the annual pumpkin festival and coaching her girls to the state soccer finals, high school teacher Tj Jensen finds her good friend Zachary Collins dead in his favorite chair. When the handsome new deputy closes the case without so much as a “why” or “how,” Tj turns her attention from chili cook-offs and pumpkin carving to complex puzzles, prophetic riddles, and a decades-old secret she seems destined to unravel.

My Book Review:

In Pumpkins In Paradise, the first book in the Tj Jensen Mystery series, author Kathi Daley weaves an intriguing cozy mystery tale that follows the amateur sleuth adventures of high school teacher Tj Jensen, as she tries to solve the murder of her friend Zachary Collins.

Set in the lakefront resort town of Serenity, Nevada, Tj utilizes logical puzzle clues that her elderly reclusive friend Zachary had taught her in order to search for the identity of his murderer and solve the mystery behind his untimely death.

Pumpkins In Paradise is an intriguing whodunit tale that has a wonderful fall theme, and enough quirky characters, witty banter and humor, drama, secrets, a growing list of suspects, and surprising twists and turns, that will easily keep you guessing the identity of the murderer. You can't help but get caught up in the drama and calamity that ensues as Tj tries to solve her friend's murder. Tj's amateur investigative adventure unfolds with a wonderful balance of comedy, drama, suspense, and sweet romance that easily kept me guessing, and left me wanting more.

I would be remiss if I didn't mention how much I really enjoyed the author's rich description of the lakeside paradise town of Serenity and it's colorful townsfolk. You can't help but feel the resort's peacefulness and wish that you could visit this charming lakeside resort town.

Pumpkins In Paradise is an entertaining cozy murder mystery that will engage you to join in the crazy adventures and trials and tribulations that occur in Serenity, while providing you with a nice dose of charm and humor.

Book Description:

It’s the phone call every parent dreads: in the middle of the night, Sandy Cline learns that her twenty-year-old son, Jordan, has been in a car accident. Her nephew, Travis, was also in the car, along with Travis’s girlfriend. All three are alive—but barely. The car was smashed against a tree along a remote and winding road, beautiful but deadly, in their rural Texas Hill Country town.

In the wake of the car crash, the close-knit family is tested like never before. Jenna, Travis’s mother, blames Jordan—as well as her sister, Sandy—after reports surface that Jordan had been driving. As the young adults struggle to survive, tension between their parents escalates. But when trust is broken and a shocking family secret is exposed, it creates a perfect storm of harrowing consequences. Rumors in the small town spread like wildfire. When details of the accident are questioned, Sandy and Jenna wonder if their family has been destroyed beyond repair.

As always, there’s much more to the story…if the family is to survive, they will have to come together to confront the terrible truth and overcome their pain. But are some betrayals unforgivable?

My Book Review:

A parent's worse nightmare ....

Can a person make amends and ask forgiveness for the secrets, lies, betrayals and bad choices made in their life, even if the ramifications deeply affected others? Can forgiveness and love still be found within peoples' hearts, when the one that has caused so much pain tries to make amends? What if you have your own secrets, lies and had made bad choices, can you make amends and forgive yourself? These are the questions and dilemmas that face Sandy Cline in Faultlines.

Faultlines is a hauntingly beautiful story of love, loss, heartache, secrets, betrayals, forgiveness and redemption. The storyline is well-written, realistic and intriguing, it pulls the reader in from the beginning, and takes them on a roller coaster ride as they follow the intertwining emotional journeys of Sandy Cline and Libby Hennessey.

Set in the Texas Hill Country town of Wyatt, author Barbara Taylor Sissel weaves a compelling story that contains a tangled web of inner demons, secrets, alcoholism, love lost, betrayals, choices made and paying the price, making amends, seeking forgiveness and redemption. This is an intricate story of how tiny faultlines develop within a family and lives are shattered after a senseless tragedy, and learning how to mend the damage and start anew, that will leave the reader pondering what they would do if they were in Sandy and Libby's shoes.

With a realistic cast of characters who have flaws and imperfections; and a rich description of the Texas Hill Country setting, Faultlines is a captivating tale full of mystery and suspense that engages the reader's imagination; and a psychological and realistic look into the complicated and fragile dynamics of relationships, and the consequences that come with choices made in life.
