#Kindness

By: Michele Lynn Seigfried

Why is #kindness trending on Twitter? Why should it be a “trend” to be kind? When was the last time you were kind? Is it easier to remember the last time you weren’t kind?

The recent explosion of #kindness on twitter got me thinking. I try to be kind to others. Am I always? Absolutely not! Was I kind to my husband the day I was vacuuming, and I bent down to pick up my daughter’s toys, only to turn around to the vacuum being put away? It’d be nice to think I smiled and said, “Oh honey, I wasn’t finished yet with that vacuum.” But the reality of this sleep-deprived mom, who believes her husband does things just to make more work for her is one that is not so kind. “Why the **** did you put the vacuum away in the middle of me trying to vacuum?” Was probably a more accurate account of what I said at that moment.

Many, many years ago, one of my first jobs was a waitress at a pizza place. Customers, as I would learn, were not always kind to me. Some left a measly 2% tip. Some left no tip at all. A bunch of crazed pizza makers screamed at me for writing too small on the order pad or not wiping the tables in the direction they wanted me to. That job lasted two days. Maybe if people were kinder, it would have lasted longer. Maybe if people were kinder, I wouldn’t have learned to appreciate the wait staff at restaurants. Maybe I wouldn’t be a good tipper. Maybe their lack of kindness taught me something.

I was in a long line at the post office when a senior citizen arrived. The man was wearing an Army baseball cap. He asked the clerk behind the desk where to get stamps. She yelled at him to get in the back of the line. He only had one letter to mail, so I reached in my purse and handed him a stamp. Then I thanked him for serving our country. He wanted to pay me, but I refused. Wasn’t that the least I could do for this veteran who just wanted to mail a letter? Why couldn’t the clerk have been kinder? I don’t mean that she should have told him to skip the line, but the tone in her voice, the frustration she exuded…maybe it was her attitude that made me be nicer. If he had gotten into the line and I saw he only had one letter to send, and no one said anything, would I have even thought to hand him a stamp? Maybe the unkind postal worker taught me something.

On a trip to Atlantic City, when I was pregnant with my daughter, my husband and I had breakfast inside a casino. When the bill arrived, the waiter told us that someone else had paid for us. We didn’t know the person and never saw him. I wondered why he paid for us. Was it because I was pregnant? I couldn’t understand how a complete stranger could be so generous, so kind. On a recent trip to Atlantic City, an elderly homeless man approached us on the boardwalk as we ate a pizza dinner. He asked for some change to buy food. We didn’t have change, but we bought the pizza for him on our credit card. I have to admit, there are times I’ve ignored homeless people and wasn’t so kind. But this time was different. There wasn’t a second thought in my head about buying the man dinner. Maybe the kind stranger at the casino who bought me a meal taught me something.

When I was a little girl, my father got “bumped” from his position in a union and was out of work for quite some time before there was another opening. He had trouble supporting the family. Different relatives took turns feeding us. I remember going to my Uncle’s Hoagie Shop to get lunch meats for our school lunches. I remember eating pasta dinners at one of my cousins’ houses. This year I donated gift cards to a family in need so that their children could have a nice holiday season. Maybe my relatives taught me something long ago about being kind to someone else who was in the same situation I was in so many years ago.

Maybe all the animal cruelty and puppy mills that exist are what prompted me to rescue a dog last year instead of going to a breeder. Maybe the world’s lack of kindness toward animals taught me something.

So, what was it that I learned? That many people don’t think to be kind in every situation, all the time. That maybe we need the unkindness in the world to teach us how to be kind. Maybe we also need the kindness of others to teach us how to appreciate those who are kind to us. Maybe a little #kindness is what the world needs to remind all of us to be kinder. Maybe next time my husband puts away the vacuum in the middle of my vacuuming, I’ll remember to say “Thanks for trying to help out.” Maybe my own unkindness taught me something.

My Book Review:

If you are looking for a fast-paced cozy mystery to wile away a cold winter's day, then I have the book for you!

In Community Affairs, the third book in the Jersey Shore Mystery Series, the author transports the reader back to the Jersey Shore to follow newly promoted Coral Beach Municipal Clerk Bonnie Fattori and her best friend, amateur sleuth Chelsey Alton, on their latest mystery investigative adventure.

Set in the small NJ shore town of Coral Beach, and told in the first person narrative, Bonnie and Chelsey take the reader on a riveting roller coaster ride full of surprising twists and turns as they investigate the kidnapping and murder of local resident, nurse Polly Pitcher.

This book has enough humor, mystery, suspense, and romance that easily draws the reader into the story, keeping them guessing until the surprising conclusion. Bonnie's new position in the seaside town gets a tad bit crazy when she has numerous run ins with her psycho new neighbor, Lyla Spratt, wife of local Senator Cason Spratt! And if that isn't enough, Bonnie has suspicions that Lyla aka "Lemon Face" is involved in the untimely death of Polly Pitcher, so she recruits best friend Chelsey Alton to help her solve the mystery, but their investigation leads to Bonnie's life being threatened! As this entertaining action-packed whodunit unfolds, the quirky characters and intriguing storyline will make you laugh, keep you in suspense, and even engage you in trying to solve the mystery along with the sassy duo of Bonnie and Chelsey.

Community Affairs is a thoroughly entertaining cozy mystery to read. Even though it can be a standalone read, I would suggest that the reader read the series in sequential order so that they can follow every one of Chelsey Alton and friends madcap mystery adventures!

Book Excerpt:

Trembling Hearts by Suzette Riddick

Restless, Tremaine tossed and turned for hours. Still shaken up over the harsh words hurled back and forth between the two most important men in her universe, sleep eluded her. The ringing doorbell accompanied by the loud knocking hadn’t disturbed her.

She nudged her snoring husband. “Bernard…Bernard…Bernard!”

Startled he jolted from his sleep. “What is it dear?” He sleepily answered as his lids began to close only to be snapped opened by the persistent banging.

“Someone’s at the door.”

The couple stuffed their feet into slippers, quickly grabbing their robes. She followed closely on her husband’s heels. Her fingers fumbled at tying the thin fabric belt around her waist. A sickening feeling formed in the pit of her stomach. Who in the world could be at their door at this hour? And why would they travel so far up the rural road leading to their home?

The sickening feeling dug deeper when Bernard opened the door to find Sheriff Dougherty on the other side. She instinctively reached for her husband’s hand. In the dark, the sorrowful look in the sheriff’s blue eyes was unmistakable.

“Bernard, Tremaine…there’s been an accident. It’s Jason. You folks need to get to the hospital right away.” The sheriff hesitated before adding, “He’s in bad shape.”

Book Description:

Now that her dating days are finally behind her, Claire is enjoying a blissful life with her new husband and baby boy. Gone are the drunken nights in impractical shoes, and Internet dates with men who lose their hair…and their pants.

Unfortunately, she’s discovering that life as a married, working mom isn’t turning out to be the perfect happily ever after she dreamed about. She adores her little boy, but her husband’s behavior is about to make him eligible for the Most Disappointing Spouse of the Year Award.

His unwillingness to help around the house and his slacker work ethic are frustrating enough, but the constant parade of beautiful, single women in his life has Claire in a constant state of distress. Didn’t she realize that the cute front man of a popular cover band would attract hot, young women with perfect cellulite-free legs? And whose idea was it to hire the curvy nanny with the sexy accent?

When an unexpected business trip pops up – with a super-hot, much-too-young former love interest, Claire’s own loyalty is put to the test. A publishing conference in Key West may be the ideal escape from her troubles, but will she be tempted by the forbidden in a town full of swingers and breakfast alcohol consumption? And why does everyone they meet think the business colleagues are on their honeymoon?

Scrambling to cover up innocent, but suspicious circumstances, the couple struggles with honesty, loyalty and what to share with each other. As they sink deeper into their marital gloom, will they find their way back to wedded bliss, or finally succumb to the enticement of new…and uncomplicated romance?

The Juggling Act is Book 3 in the Rom-Com on the Edge series. All books are standalone novels, however read in order for maximum fun!

Book Excerpt:

“Claire…are you drooling on the window?”

I jump. “No, of course not. I was just looking out the…holy shit, we’re in the air?” I stare into Justin’s emerald eyes, with the whites as clear as Aidan’s at this ungodly hour. “I didn’t sleep through takeoff!”

“Well, actually you did. I fastened your seatbelt and put your phone away, and stowed your tray to the upright and locked position. At one point your head smacked against the window a bit and I reached over with this pillow—”

“Would you like a beverage?” I now notice that the flight attendant has been waiting for me to give my drink order during this exchange.

“I’m sorry, yes, can I have some orange juice, please?” I hate orange juice, but I hate coffee more.

“Hmm…are you sure you don’t need a jolt?” Justin tries to pinch my arm and I flinch, almost knocking over the juice I’ve just been handed. The unamused server suppresses a sigh as she rolls her cart onto the next valued guest. I guess Justin’s hotness only goes so far with a woman who’s expected to be perky at work in the wee hours. I get it…I hide in my office until ten, if I can.

I glare at my traveling partner and he begins rifling through the magazines in front of him. “Did the baby keep you up last night? Wait, I know. You had to give your husband a proper goodbye and that took most of the night.” He smiles and chuckles to himself as he browses through overpriced gadgets that don’t look real.

“Yep, that’s it. So if you will excuse me, I am going to take a small nap. Please wake me if I sleep through landing as well.”

I recline my seat the extra centimeter and close my eyes.

I wish Brandon and I were having wild sex all night to say goodbye. Instead we have been arguing for the past two weeks about babies, adoption, birth mothers, trash cans, nannies, neighbors, music, business trips and a book designed to make me look like an uncaring shrew.

I don’t even know where to begin to solve all of these problems. He said he was sorry for not discussing the e-mail from Chastity, but she did copy both of us. I suppose technically it was my own fault for not opening it, but it was clearly his sole decision to set up a meeting with her before consulting me. He said he would cancel if I was opposed, but he knows damn well that I can’t legally oppose it.

And he’s right that I don’t want to be there, but I also don’t want my son getting to know his birth mother behind my back. Brandon knows how I fear losing Aidan to her, even though that is unrealistic, given her circumstances as a young, single woman struggling to make it. Unless she has found a man and he is encouraging her to…I cut off that train of thought before I need the vomit bag.

I do have a tendency to get worked up over nothing, but on top of Brandon hiding Chastity’s visit, he has been writing a book fictionalizing our lives for the past few months and hasn’t told me. My company is going to publish it, and I didn’t even know about the topic. I recognize that I can be difficult to approach with sensitive matters, but he can’t hide his head in the fucking sand and avoid every issue.

He is younger than me, but eight years is not such a great difference. He is thirty years old, not eighteen. He knows better.

And as if all of that wasn’t enough to fight about, we have a nanny who behaves very inappropriately around my husband when I’m there. Obviously it is worse when I’m at work, and now I will be away all week.

We also have a neighbor with a painfully apparent desire to jump his bones, and he just acts like it’s all fine and I’m overreacting.

Last night was the worst clash of wills when he started in on my trip with Justin. This is a business trip. The person who provides our health insurance and stable income was told that this is a required activity. Does he really think I like leaving Aidan for a whole work week, particularly with our marriage in shambles? I didn’t choose Justin to accompany me on the venture, either.

Sleep is alluding me, so I decide to open my eyes and see what Justin’s doing. He has headphones in and his eyes are shut. He has those impossibly long eyelashes that so many men are blessed with and don’t deserve.

I almost tap him on the shoulder, but decide to leave him alone. We have all week to talk, and I need to pace myself for a bumpy ride.

And I am not referring to airplane turbulence.

My Book Review:

If you are looking to read an entertaining Rom-Com tale that will keep you in stitches, then The Juggling Act is the book for you!

In The Juggling Act, book three of Rom-Com On The Edge Series, the reader follows thirty-eight year old Claire Harmon, an acquisitions editor for Bella Donna Publishing Company in Richmond, VA, as she struggles to juggle everything in her life, while trying to reclaim her marital bliss with her younger thirty year old author/musician husband Brandon.

Author Carol Maloney Scott weaves a fast-paced tale that follows Claire's trials and tribulations as she deals with the craziness of her everyday day: working full time, being a mommy and wife, dealing with the skanky antics of a young Russian nanny and a single mom/neighbor who both have a thing for Brandon, and a birth mama/stripper named Chastity who suddenly wants to visit with their adoptive son Aidan! But that's not all, especially when you add into the mix a business trip to Key West, Florida with Justin Scott, her sexy younger (twenty-eight years old) co-worker and former love interest, what you get is a sassy but confused lady who has one heck of a complicated life!

Written in the first person alternating narrative, the reader will find it easy to follow Claire and Brandon's he said-she said story as they try to deal with the communication issues in their marriage, along with Claire's fears and insecurities, in order to get back their marital bliss. I certainly could relate to Claire as she tries to juggle everything in her life, especially when you have a spouse who is less than helpful around the house, preach it sister! From the crazy antics of the sexy young nanny Tatiana and single mom/neighbor Diamond; to the appearance of characters from past books in the series, especially Claire's two lovable mini wiener dogs Dixie and Duncan; to Claire's dilemma when it comes to Justin, while trying to deal with her fears and insecurities, the misunderstandings, secrets, lack of communication, and the adoption issue that plagues her floundering marriage to Brandon, leaving it in shambles, The Juggling Act will definitely keep the reader entertained and laughing out loud as they turn the pages.

The Juggling Act is a lighthearted and enjoyable tale that has quirky characters, witty banter, and a crazy good storyline with enough romance, drama, and humor that is true chick lit rom-com at its finest!

When Antonia’s sister dies, she finds herself longing to be back in the states. An Italian wartime bride from the ‘40s, she knows how precious love can be. Can her own story of an American soldier and a very special collie once again bring two hearts together at Christmas?

Book Excerpt:

CHAPTER 1

Love is friendship that has caught fire. It is quiet understanding, mutual confidence, sharing, and forgiving. It is loyalty through good and bad times. It settles for less than perfection and makes allowances for human weaknesses. - ANNE LANDERS

Katie pushed her forehead against the cool bathroom tile and took a deep, shaky breath. What just happened? It was not supposed to go like this. The perfect romantic night had turned into a disaster. How can I go back out there and face him?

She pulled away from the wall and stared at her reflection in the mirror. Tears glistened in her dark green eyes. One slipped down her cheek and onto the front of her silk jade dress. The dark stain slowly spread like the frustration that crept through her soul.

Dominic Lawrence was perfect. His dark, good looks, and tall, athletic body had women taking a second look whenever he entered the room. They had similar interests but were opposites in personality. He was easy going to her serious nature. She liked to plot and plan; he loved spur-of-the-moment. Her thriftiness made him chuckle. They accepted their differences and balanced one another. And the man could make her blood boil with a look or a touch.

Why now? Fumbling in her purse for her cell, she tried to put things in perspective. Calm down. He might change his mind. She might not agree. Katie swiped the screen, her finger slicing across the necks of the happy couple smiling back at her. That’s ironic.

“Oh my god, you remembered to call me. Did he propose?” her best friend’s voice gushed over the line. “Where did he take you?”

“Alinea’s.” She tried to stamp down the impatience she felt at Jazzy’s enthusiasm. “Listen—”

“No way. It’s one of the most expensive restaurants in Chicago. He had to buy the tickets months ago.” Alinea’s, a premiere restaurant on the east side, did not take reservations but sold tickets instead.

“I know. Now listen—”

“I heard they have a green apple helium balloon. It’s clear and you put your mouth on it and suck in the flavor. Then the helium affects your voice… Are you crying?”

“No, yes. Oh Jazzy.” She let loose a sob as another conversation didn’t hit the mark. She felt as if she were in the twilight zone.

“Did he propose?” The excitement was gone from her friend’s voice, replaced with concern and wariness.

“Not yet.” She held the phone away from ear, anticipating the loud reprimand.

“WHAT? Where are you? The bathroom?”

“Yes, but I—”

“It’s just a little panic attack. We practiced this. Your traditional Italian man gets down on one knee. He says something so tender and sweet that you smile, get a little moisture in your eyes—”

“He wants to bring his grandmother back from Italy to live with him.”

Silence. A speechless Jazzy would be laughable at any other time. “Help me.” She hated the pleading in her tone, hated not being in control of a situation.

“Give me a minute, you caught me off guard.”

Katie heard the snap of her fingers on the other end. She only did that when she was stumped. Oh, god. “What am I going to do? You know I’m not a demonstrative person.”

A snort burst through the phone.

“I’m not like the rest of his family. They are in your face, hugging then fighting then hugging again. I need peace. And privacy. And personal space. What if she’s like the New York branch?”

“You don’t need space from your hunky Italian.” Jazzy chuckled. “The Romano family is loud, affectionate and unfiltered. I adore them. But remember, there are dozens of them. Dominic was raised an only child like his father, who was raised by Antonia. His cousins are all on his mother’s side.”

“I’ve never met her but he’s talked about her so much. His grandmother is all he has left on his father’s side. What if she’s a domineering matriarch? I can’t even cook.” She batted a wisp of hair from her eyes, mindless of the pins that threatened to fall from the loose bun. “Or worse, what if she’s a decrepit old woman? I have a terrible bedside manner. Can you see me emptying bed pans or feeding someone?”

Laughter bubbled from the phone. “From the stories Dom has told us, she probably has more energy than you. Antonia sounds very independent and may refuse to come back with him.”

Katie hadn’t thought of that. Perhaps all this drama was premature. “That’s a good point. But Dominic doesn’t put his foot down often and when he does, he’s impossible to sway. He says he owes his life to that woman.”

Jazzy took on her let’s-be-reasonable tone. “She came back for her son and daughter-in-law’s funeral and stayed two years. According to his cousin, Dom would have walked away from the family business if his grandmother hadn’t intervened. He owes her a lot.”

The tears stung the back of her eyes again and she silently nodded her head. It was time to give back, and the man she loved would never turn his back on family.

“Do you love him?”

“With all my heart.” The voice of reason. What would she do without Jazzy?

“Then you can’t tell him no.”

“But how can I tell him yes?”

Silence. Then a chuckle. “Okay, Plan B. Here’s what we do…”

My Book Review:

Dante's Gift is a wonderfully poignant holiday romantic tale that intertwines two love stories: the present day story of Katie and Dominic set in Chicago, with the historical story of Dominic's grandparent's Antonia and Ken set in Italy during WWII.

Author Aubrey Wynne weaves a lovely romantic tale that transports the reader to present day Chicago where Katie struggles to commit to her relationship with boyfriend Dominic, who is ready to propose to her. When Dominic brings his grandmother Antonia from Italy to live to with him in Chicago, Katie is charmed by Dominic's sweet Nonna when she recounts how she met and fell in love with her young American soldier in WWII Italy, and about a lovable collie named Dante.

I loved reading this enchanting holiday romance story, the intertwining of the past with the present easily keeps the reader engaged as both love stories unfold. There is something about holiday romance stories that tugs at my heart and stirs my soul, so as I read Antonia and Ken's wartime love story, I couldn't help but smile as I imagined the lovely elderly Italian lady telling it to an unsure young American woman on the cusp of her own true love story. I would be remiss if I didn't mention that I loved the addition and role that the lovable collie Dante played in the story, it was an added sweetness that simply left a smile on my face.

Dante's Gift is a beautifully written holiday themed romance story about true love and all that it encompasses.
