Claire understands they’re heading for divorce. Two days later, when she’s alone in the house, a young woman comes to the door and hands over her infant. This is their son’s baby. The girl says, “I told Ian she’d be too much work, and I’ve got other plans.” She disappears. Ian is ready to put the baby up for adoption because his daughter deserves a good, solid family, better than what the Barneses have become. Jack and Claire must figure out what to do next.
Intersecting the main stories of the Barnes family is the subplot involving the driver of the car. No alcohol, no speeding involved. But guilt seeps into the driver’s soul and changes her life. Who will forgive this woman?
My Book Review:
A parent's worse nightmare ... the accidental death of a child ... a tragedy that will interrupt, tear apart, and forever change a family.
The Barnes family is a typical Houston middle class family: Claire and Jack have been married for twenty-three years, they operate Barnes Construction, a family owned home construction business. They have two children, eighteen year old Ian is a senior in high school and vivacious twelve year old Kayla. While Jack focuses on the family business, Claire is interested in art and had recently enrolled in the University of Houston art program. The Barnes family's world is shattered and forever changed when Claire is late getting home from class, only to find that while playing toss outside with Ian, Kayla has accidentally been struck by a car.
Sarah Levine was driving the car that hit Kayla. She was not drunk or speeding, the sun's glare that temporarily blinded her followed by a sneeze, was all it took for Sarah to momentarily lose concentration and accidentally hit the girl. Shaken by what happened, Sarah is unable to forgive herself, even though it truly was an accident.
Kayla dies five days after the tragic accident, causing the Barnes family and Sarah Levine's lives to completely fall apart, wracked with pain, grief, guilt and blame, they are unable to pick up the pieces of their lives. The story follows their lives for a period of two years, when circumstances arise that causes them to re-examine their lives, and find a way to deal with the past in order to heal and move forward.
Family Interrupted is a poignant story that follows a family's tragic loss of their child that interrupted and forever changed their lives. Author Linda Barrett weaves a powerfully emotional tale told in alternating first person narratives by Claire, Jack, and Ian, that documents their two year struggle of dealing with the grief, guilt and blame from the tragic loss of Kayla, that tears their family apart and hinders their ability to heal and move forward with their lives.
Family Interrupted is a heart wrenching story that is a real tear-jerker that takes the reader on an emotional roller coaster ride. You can't help but feel compassion and empathy for the Barnes family and for Sarah Levine, as the anguish and pain they endure over a two year period is palpable and crippling, it simply will pull at your heartstrings. You can't help but yearn for the family to let go of the tragic past and start healing as their story slowly unfolds. The author keeps the reader captivated as they turn the pages until they reach the satisfying conclusion that will leave them with a hint of a smile and completely spent.
