Welcome to Hope Beach. A place of intoxicating beauty . . . where trouble hits with the force of a hurricane.
Inheriting a beautiful old hotel on the Outer Banks could be a dream come true for Libby. The inn cries out for her restorer’s talent and love of history. She’s delighted to learn of the family she never knew she had. And the handsome Coast Guard lieutenant she’s met there on the island could definitely be the man of her dreams.
But Libby soon realizes that the only way she can afford the upkeep on the inn is to sell it to developers who are stalking the island. The father who willed her the inn has died before she could meet him, and her newfound brother and sister are convinced she’s there to steal their birthright. Worst of all, her best friend and business partner has been kidnapped before her eyes, and Libby’s under suspicion for the crime.
Libby’s dream come true is becoming a nightmare. Her only option is to find her friend and prove her innocence, or lose everything on the shores of Hope Island.
My Book Review:
Libby Holladay and Nicole Ingram are best friends and business partners in Holladay Renovations, specializing in the restoration and reselling of historic buildings. While on Hope Island in the Outer Banks of North Carolina for business, Nicole comes across family information that surprises Libby. The father that she thought was dead when she was five years old has actually been alive and living on Hope Island with his second family until his death a month ago. Libby's dad, Ray Mitchell was the island local philanthropist and driving force of maintaining the charm of the island village of Hope Beach for the past twenty-five years. The charm of the village has not been destroyed by tourism because he owned most of the village and refused to sell to outside developers. In his will, Ray left Libby the entire west side of the island and the old Tidewater Inn estimated to be worth over a million dollars. In addition, he had left her half-siblings, Vanessa and Brent each a million dollars in a trust fund, but they are upset over Ray's bequest to Libby, as developers from New York are interested in buying the properties to create a new tourist destination like Myrtle Beach. When Nicole is abducted from the island, Libby comes under suspicion by the island Sheriff. Racing against the clock and a hurricane leads Libby on a journey to find Nicole, to clear herself, and to find out who was responsible and the reason behind the abduction.
Tidewater Inn is an intriguing suspense novel that has enough mystery and romance to keep your heart palpitating as you turn the pages while sitting on the edge of your seat! Written in the third person narrative and set in the beautiful islands of the Outer Banks, the author engages the reader in this action packed whodunit, and transports you to the tidewater shores of the North Carolina island to follow along with the mystery, all the while keeping you in suspense and guessing until the end of the story. I loved how the author weaves a story that mixes mystery, suspense and romance with that of a story of a woman who has a life changing event that leads her to ponder "WWJD" in regard to her life as she gets a second chance of belonging to a family and a home, it made the story that much more a compelling read.
The author has created a wonderful cast of characters who are realistic, complex, and down-to-earth people. Each of the characters have their own individual personal story to tell, and the author masterfully intertwines their stories effortlessly. The reader becomes easily engaged in the characters' handling of their situations, you can't help but feel for them. I loved Libby's character, she is a strong, compassionate woman who tries to live her life in the right way, and her selfless concern and support for others is admirable. I also enjoyed the romance that developed between Libby and Coast Guard Captain Alec Bourne. I would be remiss if I didn't mention the lovable Aunt Pearl, she is an aunt that anyone would love to have in their family. As the matriarch of the Mitchell family, she tries to keep the family together through her faith, love and generosity.
The author provides a story that is rich in detail and vivid description and history of the North Carolina Outer bank islands. If you ever get the chance to visit the Outer Banks, the beautiful wild shorelines and whimsical village settings are truly a little piece of paradise that is a visitors, surfers and fishermen's delight. I have family that live on the Outer Banks, and I think that author Colleen Coble has provided the reader with an accurate virtual tour guide description of the area. As you read the book, the setting easily transports you to Hope Island, close your eyes and visualize the surf rolling in and out while taking in the smell of the salty ocean breeze.
Tidewater Inn is a wonderful story that intertwines mystery, suspense, romance and wholesome christian living. This is the first book in The Hope Beach Series, the mystery, sights, sounds and smell of the Outer Banks will beckon to you with the release of the second book in the series in early 2013.
