Book Description:

It's been almost twenty years since Claire met her ex in high school, and now she finds herself thrust into the dating world for the first time as an adult, armed with little more than confusion and lack of experience. Not only is Ron the only man she's ever been with, she's also coping with the loss of her fertility, and if she goes on one more hideous blind date - possibly her mind. Determined to avoid both online dating and meetup groups, she endures fix-ups with all sorts of memorable characters, such as weepy Pete, the drunk skunk, the cheap hot-dog eater, and let's not forget - the unholy speed dater.

As Claire becomes more depressed over her plight, her best friend Jane prompts her to redirect her maternal longings by adopting an adorable wiener dog puppy. Dixie is not a human baby, but hopefully she will provide her new Mommy with a diversion from the parade of loony men marching through her lonely nights - that's if Mommy's house and sanity survive the destructive cyclone that is an untrained three-pound ball of craziness!

Unfortunately, while Claire is trying to move on, Ron is trying to pull her back into the past, and his life. Determined to win back his wife's affections, he offers to help Claire with home repairs as he tries to implement 'Operation Friends' in an effort to persuade his wife into giving him another chance. However, Ron is struggling with his own adjustment to single life, and isn't finding it easy to ditch the Amazon woman, or his new 'mail order bride' dating site hobby, no matter how much he has convinced himself that he and Claire belong together.

Dazed and Divorced is Book 1 in the Rom-Com on the Edge series. All books are standalone novels, but read in order for maximum fun!

Book Excerpt:

Jed clears his throat and says, “So, Claire are you here in pursuit of marriage and a family?”

Even though I have now met several of his type tonight, I remain astounded at their existence. Is there one normal man worthy of a real date? Not just here, but anywhere?

I once again look at the daunting line of potential suitors still slated to come my way and sigh. “I’m not really sure how to answer that. I’m just trying to meet people since my divorce.”

Jed winces, and is probably already praying for this sullied woman…

“But you surely want children?”

I lean back in my seat, finally relaxing my posture. This is unbelievable. The last thing I expected was to discuss my darkest problems at fucking speed dating!

But since Jed’s not even in the neighborhood of a possibility, I fold my arms and say, “I would have loved them, but I can’t have them.”

I expect him to apologize for bringing up a touchy subject, or to express his condolences. Or to tell me that God must have a different plan for me, and that I should come on his mission trip to a malaria-infested jungle to find my calling.

Instead, he places his hands on the table in front of him and grows very serious. “Claire, we must pray that the Lord will bring you children.”

I smile nervously now. “No, prayer won’t help me. I had a hysterectomy.”

He jumps back as our shift change is loudly announced by Mary.

As he stands up, he says, “I see. Well, since you have allowed the devil’s work to be done to your body, I don’t know that you can be—”

A tall, attractive man appears beside psycho Pastor Jed, who obviously has abortion and hysterectomy confused, and says, “Okay, buddy. Nice speech. Let’s move it along. I need to meet this beautiful blonde.”

Jed moves on in disgust and the somewhat hot new guy sits down, and I immediately start laughing. It starts as a smirk but I can’t hold it in.

“And what’s so funny, Miss…Claire?”

His ability to read my nametag on my chest without fear is a good sign, but it’s his name that’s got me in stitches.

“Hello, Christian.”

He now seems to get the joke and says, “Yes, it is rather humorous that my name is Christian and I’m the least holy one in the bunch tonight. Are there some nutters here or what?”

“I’ll say, but let’s not waste time on them. Were you invited here by one of the church ladies?”

“I was.”

He nods his head in the direction of my seat neighbor. I wonder how they know each other, but I don’t want to waste time on useless chatter with the one normal guy here.

“Me, too.” I am suddenly at a loss for words as I take in my new speed date’s dark hair and eyes. I can also peek at his firm chest from here, and his forearms and hands are strong and remind me of Ron’s…ugh…why am I thinking about Ron at a time like this?

“Hey, Claire, I have an idea.” He lowers his voice and continues, “Between you and me, I’m not seeing any good pickings in either direction you or I are headed tonight.”

We both look in the direction of the singles we haven’t met, and I have to agree that it looks dismal.

I turn back towards Christian and say, “What were you thinking?”

I am already feeling a little light-headed with excitement and I haven’t even had a drink. That’s a good sign—and Rebecca keeps telling me how I need to loosen up and take chances.

“I propose we get the hell out of here.” He eyes the door to the parking lot and our freedom.

“Really? Just get up and run out the door?”

I thought he was going to say let’s go outside of their rules and exchange information now, or plan to meet later in the week. Something spontaneous and romantic. But I guess running out of speed dating hand-in-hand with a handsome stranger is pretty romantic—it feels like a movie scene.

I steal one more quick glance down the row to my left at the men coming up next, and I catch the eye of the guy from the parking lot. I’m not looking forward to him telling me about a church sponsored lotion snorting rehab he can recommend, so I look Christian dead in the eye and say, “Okay, but you lead.”

Before anyone even looks up from their own captivating partners, Christian has grabbed my hand and we are in the parking lot, laughing our asses off. I also notice he has a nice one.

“That was sensational. I can’t believe you agreed.”

His smile is huge and I am overjoyed just seeing someone happy because of something I did. I haven’t had much of that lately.

I wipe my eyes in case my happy tears have smudged my makeup, and say, “I am trying to work on my sense of adventure.”

We are still standing in the parking lot, and I’m kind of surprised that none of the church ladies have followed us out here to admonish us for breaking the rules. However, it’s more likely that a round of applause and prayers of thanksgiving have erupted due to the departure of the two heathens.

Really, I do consider myself to be a believer…I’m not sure exactly what I believe, but I’ve never been made to feel like a terrible person before at any church function. Those people are complete whackjobs.

Christian runs his fingers through his thick hair and points to his car. “I’m over there. Do you want to follow me and get a drink first?”

I look in the general direction of his vehicle, and think a moment before saying, “First?”

Book Description:

Now that her dating days are finally behind her, Claire is enjoying a blissful life with her new husband and baby boy. Gone are the drunken nights in impractical shoes, and Internet dates with men who lose their hair…and their pants.

Unfortunately, she’s discovering that life as a married, working mom isn’t turning out to be the perfect happily ever after she dreamed about. She adores her little boy, but her husband’s behavior is about to make him eligible for the Most Disappointing Spouse of the Year Award.

His unwillingness to help around the house and his slacker work ethic are frustrating enough, but the constant parade of beautiful, single women in his life has Claire in a constant state of distress. Didn’t she realize that the cute front man of a popular cover band would attract hot, young women with perfect cellulite-free legs? And whose idea was it to hire the curvy nanny with the sexy accent?

When an unexpected business trip pops up – with a super-hot, much-too-young former love interest, Claire’s own loyalty is put to the test. A publishing conference in Key West may be the ideal escape from her troubles, but will she be tempted by the forbidden in a town full of swingers and breakfast alcohol consumption? And why does everyone they meet think the business colleagues are on their honeymoon?

Scrambling to cover up innocent, but suspicious circumstances, the couple struggles with honesty, loyalty and what to share with each other. As they sink deeper into their marital gloom, will they find their way back to wedded bliss, or finally succumb to the enticement of new…and uncomplicated romance?

The Juggling Act is Book 3 in the Rom-Com on the Edge series. All books are standalone novels, however read in order for maximum fun!

Book Excerpt:

“Claire…are you drooling on the window?”

I jump. “No, of course not. I was just looking out the…holy shit, we’re in the air?” I stare into Justin’s emerald eyes, with the whites as clear as Aidan’s at this ungodly hour. “I didn’t sleep through takeoff!”

“Well, actually you did. I fastened your seatbelt and put your phone away, and stowed your tray to the upright and locked position. At one point your head smacked against the window a bit and I reached over with this pillow—”

“Would you like a beverage?” I now notice that the flight attendant has been waiting for me to give my drink order during this exchange.

“I’m sorry, yes, can I have some orange juice, please?” I hate orange juice, but I hate coffee more.

“Hmm…are you sure you don’t need a jolt?” Justin tries to pinch my arm and I flinch, almost knocking over the juice I’ve just been handed. The unamused server suppresses a sigh as she rolls her cart onto the next valued guest. I guess Justin’s hotness only goes so far with a woman who’s expected to be perky at work in the wee hours. I get it…I hide in my office until ten, if I can.

I glare at my traveling partner and he begins rifling through the magazines in front of him. “Did the baby keep you up last night? Wait, I know. You had to give your husband a proper goodbye and that took most of the night.” He smiles and chuckles to himself as he browses through overpriced gadgets that don’t look real.

“Yep, that’s it. So if you will excuse me, I am going to take a small nap. Please wake me if I sleep through landing as well.”

I recline my seat the extra centimeter and close my eyes.

I wish Brandon and I were having wild sex all night to say goodbye. Instead we have been arguing for the past two weeks about babies, adoption, birth mothers, trash cans, nannies, neighbors, music, business trips and a book designed to make me look like an uncaring shrew.

I don’t even know where to begin to solve all of these problems. He said he was sorry for not discussing the e-mail from Chastity, but she did copy both of us. I suppose technically it was my own fault for not opening it, but it was clearly his sole decision to set up a meeting with her before consulting me. He said he would cancel if I was opposed, but he knows damn well that I can’t legally oppose it.

And he’s right that I don’t want to be there, but I also don’t want my son getting to know his birth mother behind my back. Brandon knows how I fear losing Aidan to her, even though that is unrealistic, given her circumstances as a young, single woman struggling to make it. Unless she has found a man and he is encouraging her to…I cut off that train of thought before I need the vomit bag.

I do have a tendency to get worked up over nothing, but on top of Brandon hiding Chastity’s visit, he has been writing a book fictionalizing our lives for the past few months and hasn’t told me. My company is going to publish it, and I didn’t even know about the topic. I recognize that I can be difficult to approach with sensitive matters, but he can’t hide his head in the fucking sand and avoid every issue.

He is younger than me, but eight years is not such a great difference. He is thirty years old, not eighteen. He knows better.

And as if all of that wasn’t enough to fight about, we have a nanny who behaves very inappropriately around my husband when I’m there. Obviously it is worse when I’m at work, and now I will be away all week.

We also have a neighbor with a painfully apparent desire to jump his bones, and he just acts like it’s all fine and I’m overreacting.

Last night was the worst clash of wills when he started in on my trip with Justin. This is a business trip. The person who provides our health insurance and stable income was told that this is a required activity. Does he really think I like leaving Aidan for a whole work week, particularly with our marriage in shambles? I didn’t choose Justin to accompany me on the venture, either.

Sleep is alluding me, so I decide to open my eyes and see what Justin’s doing. He has headphones in and his eyes are shut. He has those impossibly long eyelashes that so many men are blessed with and don’t deserve.

I almost tap him on the shoulder, but decide to leave him alone. We have all week to talk, and I need to pace myself for a bumpy ride.

And I am not referring to airplane turbulence.

My Book Review:

If you are looking to read an entertaining Rom-Com tale that will keep you in stitches, then The Juggling Act is the book for you!

In The Juggling Act, book three of Rom-Com On The Edge Series, the reader follows thirty-eight year old Claire Harmon, an acquisitions editor for Bella Donna Publishing Company in Richmond, VA, as she struggles to juggle everything in her life, while trying to reclaim her marital bliss with her younger thirty year old author/musician husband Brandon.

Author Carol Maloney Scott weaves a fast-paced tale that follows Claire's trials and tribulations as she deals with the craziness of her everyday day: working full time, being a mommy and wife, dealing with the skanky antics of a young Russian nanny and a single mom/neighbor who both have a thing for Brandon, and a birth mama/stripper named Chastity who suddenly wants to visit with their adoptive son Aidan! But that's not all, especially when you add into the mix a business trip to Key West, Florida with Justin Scott, her sexy younger (twenty-eight years old) co-worker and former love interest, what you get is a sassy but confused lady who has one heck of a complicated life!

Written in the first person alternating narrative, the reader will find it easy to follow Claire and Brandon's he said-she said story as they try to deal with the communication issues in their marriage, along with Claire's fears and insecurities, in order to get back their marital bliss. I certainly could relate to Claire as she tries to juggle everything in her life, especially when you have a spouse who is less than helpful around the house, preach it sister! From the crazy antics of the sexy young nanny Tatiana and single mom/neighbor Diamond; to the appearance of characters from past books in the series, especially Claire's two lovable mini wiener dogs Dixie and Duncan; to Claire's dilemma when it comes to Justin, while trying to deal with her fears and insecurities, the misunderstandings, secrets, lack of communication, and the adoption issue that plagues her floundering marriage to Brandon, leaving it in shambles, The Juggling Act will definitely keep the reader entertained and laughing out loud as they turn the pages.

The Juggling Act is a lighthearted and enjoyable tale that has quirky characters, witty banter, and a crazy good storyline with enough romance, drama, and humor that is true chick lit rom-com at its finest!

Afraid of Her Shadow by Carol Maloney Scott (Author Interview / Book Review)

In association with Chick Lit Plus Blog Tours, Jersey Girl Book Reviews is pleased to host the virtual book tour event for Afraid of Her Shadow by author Carol Maloney Scott!

Author Interview

Welcome to Jersey Girl Book Reviews, Carol!

Before we get to the interview, can you tell our readers a little bit about yourself.

Sure! My name is Carol Maloney Scott and I am a frazzled new bride and wiener dog fanatic. I have a 6 year old wiener girl, an almost 21 year old son, and I recently got married in June, which makes me the stepmother to a lovely 16 year old girl. I am a lover of donuts, and a hater of mornings. I live in Richmond, VA and I am originally from New York.

How long have you been a writer?

If you count all of my early scribblings, and all the writing I have done in my head – my whole life. If you mean how long have I been a serious author, I began writing my first novel a little over 2 years ago, unearthing a long buried childhood passion.

Do you have a day job, or is being an author your career?

I do have a day job. I work in talent acquisition/human resources for a large aerospace/defense contractor. While I enjoy my career, it is my dream to be a full time author. I am working on it!

What inspired you to become a writer? Describe your journey as a writer.

As soon as I learned what words were, I formed a very close relationship with them. I loved books from the time I was a tiny child, and once I learned to form letters on a piece of paper, I wrote stories. As a child I carried around a notebook and stared into space a lot. I am happy to report that I have finally returned to that behavior. It took me well over 30 years to get there, but I am happy that I found the courage and determination to make my dream come true.

Please give a brief description/storyline about Afraid of Her Shadow

Afraid of Her Shadow is the story of Rebecca, a forty-something single woman who has always been loyal only to her cats and her career. She finds herself deep into a relationship with a widower, and her fears surrounding this situation cause her to go from calm and rational to zany and out of control, as she tries to manage the late wife’s memory, her fear of commitment, a surly teenager, crazy relatives, a very fluffy dog, and the return of a smoking hot ex - who only serves to complicate things even more.

What was the inspiration for this story?

I began dating a widower 3.5 years ago, and today he is my husband. My journey in dealing with his late wife’s memory was my inspiration to write this story.

How did it feel to have your first book published?

It felt like Christmas and going to Disneyworld and begin crowned princess and winning the lottery. Then, of course, came even more hard work, but with each book I am still elated. I just published my 3rd book in the Rom-Com on the Edge series, and it is still an amazing feeling.

Do you write books for a specific genre?

This series is chick lit/rom com, and for the time being I intend to stay within this genre – this series has so much more material. Every story creates another sub-world of supporting characters and they all want their stories told. I mean that as a figure of speech. They don’t really talk to me. Really.

What genres are your favorite(s)? What are some of your favorite books that you have read and why?

I do enjoy chick lit/rom com. Bridget Jones’ Diary by Helen Fielding is one of my all-time favorite books because I love to laugh. I do also enjoy serious fiction. Tell The Wolves I’m Home was a deeply moving debut novel, and I hope to see more from Carol Rifka Brunt.

Do you have a special spot/area where you like to do your writing?

Yes, I write in my home office. I work from home for my day job, and it is the only place in the house where I can block out the crazies and close my door.

How do you come up with the ideas that become the storyline for your books?

My storylines are partially borne of my life experiences, but greatly fictionalized and embellished. And often the zany situations my characters find themselves in are just a product of my insanely over active brain.

When you write, do you adhere to a strict work schedule, or do you work whenever the inspiration strikes?

I write when I have the time and I feel motivated. Often that is in big spirts. I am not good at a disciplined work schedule, and I always have a million things going on. I do, however, write fast, so once I get going my fingers can’t keep up with the words in my head.

What aspects of storytelling do you like the best, and what aspects do you struggle with the most?

I love writing the scenes where everything goes wrong, and the characters have to figure out how to cope. I struggle a bit in the middle of stories, but for the most part I love all of the aspects of the storytelling process.

What are your favorite things to do when you are not writing?

I enjoy bike riding, hiking, singing karaoke, dancing, playing with my little wiener dog, spending time with my husband and kids, and shopping.

What is/was the best piece of writing advice that you have received?

You can’t revise a blank piece of paper (screen). Just keep writing.

What is the most gratifying thing you feel or get as a writer?

I absolutely love when someone tells me that my books made them laugh. I grew up in a household with a lot of humor. Being funny was a very valued trait in my family. It makes me happy to spread that feeling to people I have never met.

How do you usually communicate with your readers/fans?

I am very visible and accessible. Most of my communications are through Facebook, Twitter and Goodreads. But I also receive the occasional e-mail as well. I started a newsletter not too long ago, and hope to expand its reach as a communications avenue.

Is there anything in your book based on real life experiences or are they purely all from your imagination?

There are things in all of my books based on real life experiences. I shared here that I am married to a former widower, which is the foundation of Afraid of Her Shadow’s plot. My first book, There Are No Men, is very loosely based on some of my experiences as a newly divorced woman more than 10 years ago.

What authors have been your inspiration or influenced you to become a writer?

There are too many to name. I have been an avid reader my whole life, and everyone who tells a story that I love has inspired me.

What is your definition of success as a writer?

To me, success is defined as having a loyal readership that eagerly awaits the next book.

Are you currently writing a new book? If yes, would you care to share a bit of it with us?

I actually just published a new book. The Juggling Act continues the story of Claire, from There Are No Men, as the POV character. However, this time the story is told in multiple character POV, so we get to hear from the men as well. Claire struggles with love, loyalty and lies as she embarks on a business trip with a much too young former love interest, while her husband is holding down the fort at home, and fighting off his own inappropriately amorous attention. The Juggling Act is Book 3 in the Rom-Com on the Edge series. I am 22K words into Book 4, which will be titled Accidental Makeovers, and features Bianca as the main POV character. Bianca was first introduced in There Are No Men, and is struggling with career and relationship changes.

Thank you for visiting Jersey Girl Book Reviews Carol, and for sharing with us a bit about yourself and your writing career!

Book Description:

Forty something, self-proclaimed cougar, Rebecca is committed only to her cats and her career. Her veteran single girl lifestyle has been peaceful and happy – that is until she started dating age-appropriate Steve, an entomology professor with a sweet smile and demeanor to match. Who knew an insect scientist could be so appealing?

The problem? Steve is a widower with baggage to spare. Memories of his late wife fill his home. Smiling photos and jars of bugs serve as constant reminders of Steve’s continued attachment to his dearly departed wife, Noreen, who shared his passion for creepy crawlies!

Now that Rebecca is facing her commitment phobia by moving in with Steve, she is becoming more unhinged. Behaving more like her zany friends than her level-headed self, she burns her butt at the tanning salon, crashes on energy drinks, and even loses a hamster. Throw into the mix a few delusional relatives, a sarcastic teenager, and a fluffy dog who sheds a new dog every day, and Rebecca doesn’t recognize her old self.

And if that isn’t enough to push her over the edge, her smokin’ hot ex returns, reminding her of a simpler time with a man who carries no more baggage than a wallet.

Book 2 is a STANDALONE novel, as well as a continuation of the wacky and relatable saga of the ladies of Rom-Com on the Edge.

Book Excerpt:

I spot him right away. If he just leaned against the doorframe like that on a night when anyone was actually out, he would have women hanging off his limbs like ants on a hamburger at a picnic. That makes me wonder if Steve has an ant colony in his house.

How could Luke possibly have gotten better looking? I sigh all the way up from my toes. The perfect black hair, and SO much of it. His collar is open, revealing his perfectly toned chest with just a little bit of hair peeking out. His shoulders are huge! Were they always that big? I’m staring like an idiot, but he doesn’t see me yet. He’s looking at his phone. The stubble on his face. For the love of God, couldn’t he at least shave? He does get five o’clock shadow by noon. Now he spots me, and stands up to his full height. All six foot, three inches of dark, hot Portuguese blooded…

He puts his arms out and a slow smile creeps over his face. “Rebecca. You look beautiful. Even more than I remember.” He closes the distance between us and wraps me in a firm, but soft embrace.

I melt, but I haven’t turned into a noodle, since I’m still standing. “Hi, Luke. You look great, too. I can’t believe you’re back.”

He looks into my eyes and says, “I know. I can’t believe it, either.” He pulls me close again and now his hands are on my sides. I do not want him feeling my fat. There is no way he doesn’t see how much weight I’ve gained, but I don’t want him to have physical confirmation.

I break contact and gesture to the bar. “Let’s go inside. I can’t stay long. I have an early day tomorrow, but I want to hear all about the news.”

He holds the door for me, and as I duck under his arm to enter the dimly lit establishment, he says in my ear, “Yes, I want to share my plans.”

We walk to the bar and my eyes scan the room for anyone I know. It’s almost empty. Whew. New places never attract a huge crowd on a weeknight. They need karaoke or some other entertainment. Assessing the bar’s marketing strategy, I turn back to Luke. “Your plans?” I blink hard and swallow harder.

“Yep, plans. What would you like to drink? Still a wine drinker?” He flashes his perfect TV guy smile and I forget the English language. I do, however remember him saying “Eu te amo” while kissing the inner…

A swift head shake and I’m back. I hold onto the bar and respond, “Yes, sounds good.” This isn’t a “wine” type bar, but the bartender goes off to fetch some kind of alcohol. I don’t even know what Luke ordered. I am getting pissed at my lack of self-control. I’m acting like Claire. He’s just a man and I’ve been with many. Well, not that many, but I am forty-six. That’s thirty years of men!

Steve loves me. I begin to repeat those words in my head, like a mantra. Eu te amo. Why does “I love you” sound sexier in foreign languages?

The bartender brings our wine and Luke raises his glass. “A toast. To reunions.” I clink his glass and take a sip of wine. Luke adds, “And new beginnings.” Good thing I just took a sip and swallowed it quick.

“Are you okay? Was it something I said?” He is eyeing me mischievously as I cough into a napkin. Now I remember the downside of his charm. Those black hooded eyes and the cleft chin make it hard to concentrate on the bad parts. None of which are visible.

“I’m fine.” I take another small sip of wine to prove it. “So, why did you come back here? You had a great thing going on Entertainment Nightly.”

“I did, but it was all fluff. I need to do something of substance with my life.” He leans in and says, “You understand, minha querida.” My dear. I may have forgotten what a pain in the ass he can be, but I also forgot how easy it is to fall under the spell of this language.

He goes on to explain how he left the show and wanted to return to Richmond. “It was always a place of great creativity and passion for me.” He smiles seductively and my insides melt. Never mind what’s happening to my outsides.

I finger the bar napkin and steady my glass with the other hand. “Are you really writing a screenplay? I don’t remember you being a writer.” I narrow my eyes quizzically, then gasp as I realize that I just admitted to doing further research on him. “My neighbor noticed you on the news, and mentioned it.”

“My little party girl. You probably don’t even own a TV.” I glare at him in a playful way and he continues. “Okay, you probably do own one, but no cable, right?”

I nod. “So, how long have you been back?”

“It’s been about a month.”

I look down at my right hand diamond, purchased right after we broke up. “Violet and I did some Google searches. We also found some other...less flattering information.”

He puts down his wine glass, leans his elbows on the bar, and forms a steeple with his long, strong fingers. His beautiful, stubbly chin rests in the cradle. “Ah, yes. The rumors. You know me, Rebecca.”
