My so-called writing life – and how the Indie community freaking rocks.

I never set out to write a book. At least not when I’m in my 30’s. Oh sure – I had grand notions when I was in 3rd grade, writing stories about pets running amok in a huge mansion. And even though I’ve always been an avid reader, I never put pen to paper (or in my case – fingers to keyboard) until my friend decided to write Twilight fan-fiction. He got fed up with me pushing my ideas on him, and told me to go write my own damn book. And so I did.

I wrote and self published a 65k word book called The Broken Road. I thought I was hot shit, the next best thing since Nora Roberts. Since self-publishing was just gaining traction, the stigma that SP was for losers who can’t make it in the publishing world. I wanted to prove people wrong so I posted my manuscript on a writer’s group forum.

I got ripped. To shreds.

Not only did I need to get an editor, I needed to re-write the whole damn thing. And keeping it published the way it was only gave credence to the stigma, that just because anyone could put something online, doesn’t mean they should.

So I bit the bullet, went to the Self Publishing Book Expo… and jumped head first into the self publishing world, soaking up knowledge, guidance and contacts like a sponge.

I have made so connections in the Indie community – and as the years passed – they have been SO essential to my writing life. The support I have been given, the friendships I have made, are so crucial. Only fellow writers know the feeling of self doubt, the frustration of a character not speaking to you, the disappointment of a 1 star review. Not only have I been welcomed into the community with open arms, but I’ve been able to give back the support – to console a friend when they got another rejection letter, or when they have uploading issues.

It hasn’t been easy. It’s a long, grueling and sometimes frustrating road. I’ve made some mistakes – and mistakes aren’t cheap. But if you want people to spend their money and invest in your product, you need to spend money – and invest in yourself. Invest in your work, pay for a quality editor, a formatter, and a cover designer. You only have 1 chance to make a first impression. Make sure your impression grabs the audience – and don’t let them go.

It took a massive amount of humble pie to get to where I am today. And I am by no-means perfect. I have a ways to go before I get on that best-seller list. But I WILL get there. I have a goal – and damn if I will let anyone including my own self doubt – get in my way. To those who have a story percolating in your brain – write it down. Keep writing. Don’t stop writing. And you’ll get there too. The indie community is here, waiting for you. And will give you the support you need.

Book Description:

Twenty-six-year-old Megan Connors’s life is not going in the direction she thought it would. With her love life in the dumps, she doesn’t think it could get any worse until her long-time crush, Shane asks to move in. After all, he has no clue that she’s been in love with him for the past ten years. But fate has a way of turning things around.

As their relationship goes from “just friends” to lovers, life takes a turn for the unexpected. Shane isn’t the person that Megan once fell in love with all those years ago. Shane has a past; deadly secrets that are only revealed once the FBI knocks on Megan’s door.

Secrets, tragedy, and deceit force Shane—and Megan—to make choices that will change their lives forever. Once Megan learns the truth, will she still want to be with Shane? Or will someone else be at the end of her broken road?

The Broken Road contains mature themes, heart-pounding action, edge-of-your-seat suspense, graphic violence and steamy romance, with a side of strong language, drug dealing, and a lot of sarcastic humor.

Book Excerpt:

“Yeah, baby. I knew you’d remember me at some point. I didn’t forget you,” he said in a surly tone. He was obviously drunk and tried to run his hand down my arm. I pulled away.

“Yeah. Well, nice talking to you.” I turned my back to him and waited for Fallon to get my drink.

“Don't turn away,” he said, touching my arm “You’re here, I’m here; let’s dance for a while and see how well you remember me.”

I yanked my arm back. “No thanks. And don’t touch me. I’m here with someone, not you.”

Dominic grabbed my arm roughly. His brown eyes blazed. I could tell he was not used to hearing the word no. “You don’t need to act like that. Come on baby. Let’s dance.”

I could see Fallon wave to someone, but I couldn't see who. God, I didn't want to cause a scene and cause security to come over. I didn’t need anyone to fight my battles, I could fight them myself. I looked down at his sleazy hand on my arm and balled up my fists.

“Listen, asshole, if you don’t get your hand off me, I’m going to break it,” I warned.

Dominic just laughed and let go. “If you’re here with someone, where is he? Huh?”

“Hey, baby, did you miss me?” said a voice behind me. A pair of muscular tattooed arms wrapped around my waist. I knew that voice. Shane. I breathed a sigh of relief. I looked up at him. His beautiful eyes were hard and his jaw was clenched. His body was coiled in anger. Shane was ready to drop this clown to the floor. I played the role and stood up on my toes to kiss his jaw line. I could feel a little quiver in his body as he relaxed his stance slightly.

“Hey, sweetie. Of course I did,” I said with a smug smile on my lips.

“What's up, Dominic?” Shane said with a nod, his tone undeniably cold. Shane is a gentle man, but he is also a protector. He never fought unless it was necessary and when he did fight, he rarely lost.

“Shane. Sorry man, I didn't realize she was with you,” Dominic said, backing off slightly.

Shane ignored him and loudly whispered, “Let’s dance.” Taking my hand, he led me to the dance floor. I turned and saw Fallon watching us with anticipation. “Thanks,” I mouthed, as Shane pulled me away. She just grinned. She knew how close Shane came to kicking Dominic’s ass.

My favorite Usher song came on and Shane pulled me close. With my body tingling from his touch, my hopes soared. But I felt the need to give him an out, just in case. “Thanks for helping me, but I could have handled him. I think you made your point. You don’t have to dance with me if you don’t want to.”

Shane gave me a mischievous grin. “We can't let Dominic see you dancing alone can we? What, you don’t want to dance with me?”

I had to smile. “Oh shut up, you fool.”

He put his hands on my hips, and pulled me closer. Shane swayed his body in time with mine, matching me step to step. We fit perfectly. I was captivated by how well our bodies seem to fuse together. I threw my arm around his neck as he held me. We were so close air couldn’t have found a space between us. Electric sparks shot straight to my toes and I had to remember to breathe. I looked up at him; his eyes were dark and inviting. I don’t know if it was the loneliness of being single or the heat of the moment, but I put my other arm around his neck and tentatively touched my lips to his. I cannot believe I just did that. My cheeks flamed with embarrassment.

“Sorry,” I stammered.

Shane’s response stole what little breath I had left. He crushed his lips hungrily to mine. Those electric sparks were nothing compared to what I felt then. Fire broke out all over my body, the sensation shot right through me to a place that had been idle for far too long—my heart (and some place lower). His tongue gently caressed mine, and I sighed in ecstasy. Shane broke the kiss off first; there was fire in his eyes. “Damn, Megan,” he muttered, holding me tight. Oh my god, what did I do? I can’t believe we kissed!

“Let’s get out of here while we’re still standing,” he growled, pulling me off the dance floor.

My Book Review:

The Broken Road is a riveting romantic suspense novel that follows the complicated friends to lovers relationship of Megan and Shane.

Author Melissa Huie weaves a multi-layered tale of friendship, unrequited love, drama, suspense, secrets, passion, and danger that takes the reader on one hell of a wild ride.

Megan has secretly been in love with her childhood friend Shane for years, but it was an unrequited love. When Shane shows up at Megan's door needing a place to live, fate has a way of changing their relationship from friendship to lovers, only to send their fledgling happiness and lives spiraling out of control when Shane's secretive past rises to the surface. With danger lurking around the corner, Megan and Shane are forced to make hard choices that will change their lives forever.

The Broken Road is a compelling tale that has a great mixture of steamy romance, drama, suspense, and intriguing twists and turns that are cleverly interwoven throughout the story. It is the kind of story that keeps the reader sitting on the edge of their seats and wondering what will happen next to Megan and Shane. While Megan is a strong girl that you can't help but like; Shane is the one who keeps the reader guessing, and just when you think you have him figured out, he turns around and isn't the person you expected him to be. And then when you add in the element of danger to Megan and Shane's story, the author takes their relationship to another level ... but alas, she teases the reader with a cliffhanger ending that leaves the reader wanting more. Megan and Shane's complicated story continues in Broken Promises, the second book in the series.

The Broken Road is the first book in The Broken Road Series.

Book Description:

Each weekday from 2:00-4:00 p.m., Grace and Ashton cohost Battle of the Sexes, a radio program arguing the he-said/she-said issues of the day. Their fiery debates often have listeners wondering if there’s more to their relationship than just talk, even though Grace has been dating Phillip, Mr. Tall, Dark, and Perfect, since long before she ever met Ashton Miller. Yet when news comes that Battle of the Sexes is on the bubble for cancellation, Grace and Ashton need to step up their efforts to engage their audience to keep the show alive. When a charity organization approaches them and proposes that the two of them kiss for a fund raiser, Grace and Ash agree to kiss for a good cause. A kiss is just a kiss, right?

Book Excerpt:

“Good afternoon, and welcome to the newest edition of Battle of the Sexes," Grace said, starting off the show. "With me today is the man who has just proven that the Instagram app is truly foolproof—my no-longer-technically challenged cohost, Ashton Miller.”

Ash leaned forward into the mic. “And with me is the woman I’ve recently learned feels compelled to alert the world via photograph every time she finds a pair of shoes she likes—the woman who takes the ‘anonymous’ out of Shopaholics Anonymous—my lovely cohost, Grace Vasquez.”

Grace was unapologetic. “A good pair of shoes is worth sharing.”

“Oh? Does that mean I should post pictures of my shoes?” Ash asked, picking up his phone and pressing the camera icon.

“You’re wearing hiking boots.”

“That’s right,” Ash said, putting his shoes up on the table and snapping a picture. “These are Salomon Quest 4D GTXes. I wear them any time I go on a shoot that requires some hiking. They’re light, durable, and provide great stability. Is that the sort of thing you share on Instagram?”

“Not really,” Grace said. “But I’m sure Salomon doesn’t mind the free advertising you just handed them.”

“Well, I’m totally posting a picture,” Ash said, in his best valley girl tone. “It’s not every day a man finds comfort, function, and fashion all in one shoe.”

“Indeed,” Grace replied. “I’m still waiting for that day to happen for you.”

Ash smiled against his will and set his phone to the side. He’d post the photo later. Grace was clearly in a mood that required his full attention. “So what are we talking about today? And, please, don’t let it be shoes!”

Grace glanced at her computer screen, giving Ash a view of her stunning profile. Seriously, how was her skin so smooth?

“Today the most up-voted topic is…” She blinked, looking confused. “Huh.”

“Huh?” Ash echoed, intrigued by the look of confusion on Grace’s face.

“Cupcakes,” she said.

“Cupcakes?”

Grace nodded and frowned at her monitor. “Why do men hate cupcakes? is the trending topic at the moment.” Grace looked Ash’s way, visibly confused. “Do men hate cupcakes?”

My Book Review:

The Kiss That Launched A 1000 Gifs is a thoroughly entertaining romance novel that will tickle your funny bone!

Author Sheralyn Pratt weaves a sassy romantic tale that follows the on-air battle between the sexes with radio co-hosts Grace Vasquez and Ashton Miller. There is a lot of witty banter and electrifying sparks flying between the two, it is so much fun to watch Grace and Ash try to maintain a denial of attraction when it is so obvious that they are meant for each other.

The story flows smoothly in the third person narrative alternating between Grace and Ash's perspective, you can't help but get drawn into their story. There is so many laugh-out-loud moments and subtle sexual tension between the two, especially when they are in the heat of the battle of the sexes with relationship and other social issues, that it easily takes the reader on a thrilling roller coaster ride. I would be remiss if I didn't mention that the inclusion of the Instagram pictures (jabs taken at each other) with snarky comments is hilarious, I found myself laughing so much that I think I even snorted!

The Kiss That Launched A 1000 Gifs is a fast paced and delightful romance story that is the perfect read on a lazy summer day!

Book Description:

Home from college for the summer, Samantha Kinsey steps into her role as nanny for her two favorite little charges. But when she finds herself playing chauffeur more than playmate, her summer outlook quickly turns from fun to bleak. That is, until she drives the girls to a family-owned ranch and meets Colten McCoy—a genuine, hard-working cowboy, who's as set in his ways as he is handsome. Although he claims he doesn't need any fun in his life, Sam’s determined to help him find it. But she'll soon discover that cowboys are about as easy to train as wild mustangs.

Stick in the Mud Meets Spontaneity is about an adaptable girl and a not so adaptable guy. It’s about learning to accept people for who they are and realizing that sometimes who they are is exactly who they should be.

My Book Review:

In Stick In The Mud Meets Spontaneity, the third book in the Meet Your Match Series, author Rachael Anderson weaves another wonderful lighthearted romantic tale of opposites attracting and finding love.

Two very different people meet ... but can they open up their hearts and accept each other for who they are in order to get a chance at finding love?

Stick In The Mud Meets Spontaneity is a clean romantic tale that has a great mixture of romance, humor, drama, family dynamics, and life lessons. The author easily draws the reader into Samantha and Colten's story, you can't help but embrace them and enjoy the development of their relationship: from their awkward meeting, to gradually forming a friendship and accepting their differences, to discovering that there is something more growing between them. It was fun to watch how they learned to overcome the amusing challenges in their budding relationship (Colt is the stick in the mud, while Sam is the spontaneous one) and discover that opposites really do attract, and that their differences actually make them perfect together. This story has a nice mixture of humor and sweetness that will simply make you smile.

If you are looking for a fun, flirty, and lighthearted romantic feel good story, then look no further, Stick In The Mud Meets Spontaneity is the book for you. The Meet Your Match Series is a wonderful lighthearted and inspirational romance series that I would highly recommend!

Stick In The Mud Meets Spontaneity is the third book in the Meet Your Match Series.

Book Description:

The truth could cost her everything.

Her whole life, Ava Carson has been sure of one thing: she doesn’t measure up to her mother’s expectations. So when Mitchell Carson sweeps into her life with his adorable son, the ready-made family seems like a dream come true. In the blink of an eye, she’s married, has a new baby, and life is wonderful.

Or is it?

When her picture-perfect marriage begins unraveling at the seams, Ava convinces herself she can fix it. It’s temporary. It’s the stress. It’s Mitchell’s tragic history of loss.

If only Ava could believe her own excuses.

Mitchell is no longer the charming, thoughtful man she married. He grows more controlling by the day, revealing a violent jealous streak. His behavior is recklessly erratic, and the unanswered questions about his past now hint at something far more sinister than Ava can stomach. Before she can fit the pieces together, Mitchell files for divorce and demands full custody of their boys.

Fueled by fierce love for her children and aided by Graham Thomas, a new attorney in town, Ava takes matters into her own hands, digging deep into the past. But will finding the truth be enough to beat Mitchell at his own game?

Center of Gravity weaves a chilling tale, revealing the unfailing and dangerous truth that things—and people—are not always what they seem.

My Book Review:

Center of Gravity is a riveting suspense thriller that easily draws the reader into Ava and Carson Mitchell's disintegrating family dynamic when jealousy, suspicions of adultery, rage, and dark secrets from the past come to the surface.

In her debut novel, author Laura McNeill weaves a compelling and powerful tale that takes the reader on one hell of a thrilling roller coaster ride as Ava and Carson's chilling story unfolds. Told in the alternating perspectives of five main characters, the reader can't help but get caught up in the drama, tension, suspense, and intriguing twists and turns, as the once picture perfect Mitchell family disintegrates into a haunting tale that makes the reader pause and wonder just how well you really know a person. I really enjoyed getting a glimpse into each of the main characters' minds with their alternating perspectives, the storyline flows smoothly from one perspective to the next, intertwining them into one heck of gripping tale that is simply stunning.

If you want a fast paced realistic psychological thriller that pulls out all the stops and keeps you captivated until the surprising explosive conclusion, then Center of Gravity is a must read! I could easily see this novel as a Lifetime Channel movie, it is one of those rare riveting stories that will stay with the reader for a long time.

Book Description:

Violet Monte believed her love and marriage would last a lifetime–until she catches her husband in bed with a younger woman. When she realizes she was nothing more than a trophy wife, Violet decides to chase her own dreams. The only problem is, she has no idea what they are. Violet begins to pursue her own interests which sometime include spying on her mysterious neighbor, who might actually be a lady of the night. Just as Violet is finding stability–– and the possibility of opening her heart again–– her husband returns not with an apology, but with a signed pre-nuptial agreement, claiming he’ll keep everything and leave her with nothing. Violet is far from the compliant woman he once knew but she doubts she has the strength to fight and win, until her intriguing neighbor unlocks what Violet has been looking for all along. Can Violet fight back from a lost love and reinvent herself into the person she always wanted to be or will she forever be just an ex-trophy wife?

Book Excerpt:

“Once upon a time, in a land meant only for the young and good looking, there lived an unemployable, unlovable, wretched old hag. How she survived to the ripe old age of forty-one remains a mystery. All the beautiful girls in the village used to stare at Violet, the old hag, and laugh at her attempts to find love and success. The beauties sat back, stroking their long blonde locks, while the handsome princes drooled like rabid dogs and obeyed their every command.

“One sunny summer’s day, Violet was out walking when she happened upon the most stunning, tanned goddess she had ever seen. Her attention was captured immediately, and she couldn’t take her eyes off of this mesmerising beauty. Unfortunately, the one man in the village who claimed to love Violet appeared to be equally smitten by this glamorous woman, and was pawing all over her. Violet was angry and heartbroken.

“She couldn’t stand to watch the man she loved turn his attention elsewhere, so she picked up a frying pan—one of the good, solid type that you see on the late night infomercials— and she swung it back with all her might and smashed it hard against the dirty, cheating, scumbag’s—”

Violet!” Her sister’s angry voice broke her train of thought. Damn, just as she was getting to the good part.

“I would appreciate it if you didn’t let your cynical and somewhat psychotic attitude influence my children,” her sister snapped.

Violet glanced down to see her twin nieces looking up at her with wide eyes and huge smiles.

“Oh, they’re fine, they love Auntie Violet’s fairy tales.” Violet laughed and ruffled the girls’ hair.

“We all know you are heartbroken, and you have no job and nowhere to live—yada, yada, yada—but filling my children’s heads with your daydreams of revenge is helping no one. You need to stop feeling sorry for yourself and get back out there. It’s been months, Violet.”

What the hell does that even mean? Get back out where exactly? Get back to my home so I can witness my husband flaunt his new love in front of me?

The way he looked at Magen or Meagan or whatever her stupid name was, broke her heart. He hadn’t looked at Violet like that for, well, ever. She had never seen such passion in his eyes until that day, and now that she had, she was beginning to think Jim never really loved her. Yet, he had been her one great love, her knight in shining armour, her dream guy. That dream had turned into a nightmare the day she got fired and came home early.

My Book Review:

Walk on the Wild Side is an entertaining chick lit / romantic comedy that follows forty-one year old Violet Monte Reynolds' journey of personal discovery and reinvention after her twenty year marriage to her childhood best friend Jim Reynolds ends when she catches him cheating with a younger woman.

In her debut novel, author Suzie Jay weaves a sassy fun tale that easily draws the reader into Violet's story as she picks up the pieces of her life, and embarks on a personal journey of self-discovery that will help her move forward with a new beginning.

Told in the third person narrative and set in Adelaide and Sydney, Australia, Violet turns her broken heart into a personal journey filled with quirky antics, funny trials and tribulations, emotional challenges, and a sweet romance, that will keep the reader engaged and turning the pages while cheering Violet on as she rediscovers and reinvents herself, and finds true love and happiness a long the way.

I really enjoyed the poignancy, humor, romance, and intrigue of Violet's story. The author provides the reader with a sassy main character and a great cast of secondary characters who provide many laughable moments, it's a fast paced and thoroughly entertaining story that will leave a smile on your face.

Walk on the Wild Side is a touching story of rediscovering oneself, following dreams, friendships, family, and finding true love.

Book Description:

The tragic death of her best friend and husband, lead Keri to a secret diary and a secret lover.

After her best friend and her husband are killed in a private airplane crash, Keri finds some of her friend’s personal effects, one of which is a diary. When Keri reads it, she discovers her friend had been secretly in love with another man, a soldier. Keri knew nothing about the relationship, even though she and her friend were as close as sisters.

Determined to find the secret lover, Keri sets off on a journey and discovers the key to her destiny.

Book Excerpt:

Keri stopped, hovering on the edge of an absurd thought. Should she try to find Ryan? The thought gave her a sudden electric thrill. She stared down into the sand, seeing the eroded ruins of an old sandcastle that had been punished by the hostile tide.

“Ryan,” she said aloud, the sound instantly swallowed up by the beat of waves striking the beach.

Keri circled the space, gently kicking at the sand castle, mentally kicking at “what ifs.” What if he’d been killed? What if he’d moved away? What if he was married and didn’t want to remember Sophia? What if Sophia hadn’t revealed the whole truth about the relationship because there was some awful truth about him?

And how could she possibly ever locate Ryan without a last name? Sophia had never once mentioned it.

In an instant, Keri knew the decision had already been made: She had to find a way to track down and speak to this man. She whirled and marched back across the beach to where she’d left her chair and the diary. There had to be clues in the diary—had to be phrases that could help her find Ryan. At the very least, she could discover what had happened to him.

My Book Review:

The Summer Diary is a delightful romance story that follows Keri's emotional journey of searching for her dead best friend Sophia's secret lover. Keri's personal journey will lead to her discover her true self and finding an unexpected love along the way.

After a tragic plane crash takes the life of Keri's longtime best friend Sophia and her husband, Keri finds Sophie's diary and discovers that Sophia had secretly been in love with a soldier named Ryan. With only a few clues, Keri embarks on a journey filled with daunting challenges to find Ryan in order to tell him of Sophia's death, only to discover that by finding Ryan, it will also change their life.

This is a wonderful story that had a nice mixture of mystery and romance. The reader is easily drawn into the story as they follow Keri's personal journey. The secrets from Sophia's diary, along with the drama and mystery of meeting Ryan, and the intriguing twists and turns that occur along the way, coupled with an unexpected chance at finding love, takes the reader on a roller coaster ride where they will have experience the full gamut of emotions as Keri's journey unfolds.

The Summer Diary is an emotional story about friendship, love, loss, and finding oneself.
