Book Description:

In a suspenseful follow-up to her critically acclaimed Cover of Snow, Jenny Milchman ratchets up the tension with this edge-of-your-seat story of a mother determined to find her missing children.

Liz Daniels has every reason to be happy about setting off on a rare family vacation, leaving behind her remote home in the Adirondack Mountains for a while. Instead, she feels uneasy. Her children, eight-year-old Reid and six-year-old Ally, have met their paternal grandparents only a handful of times. But Liz’s husband, Paul, has decided that, despite a strained relationship with his mother and father, they should visit the farm in western New York where he spent his childhood.

On their way to the farm, the family stops at a hotel for the night. In the morning, when Liz goes to check on her sleeping children, all her anxiety comes roaring back: Ally and Reed are nowhere to be found. Blind panic slides into ice-cold terror as the hours tick by without anyone finding a trace of the kids. Soon, Paul and Liz are being interviewed by police, an Amber Alert is issued, and detectives are called in.

Frantic worry and helplessness threaten to overtake Liz’s mind—but in a sudden, gut-wrenching instant she realizes that it was no stranger who slipped into the hotel room that night. Someone she trusted completely has betrayed her. Though she knows that Ally and Reid are safe, Liz will stop at nothing to find them and get them back. From her guarded in-laws’ unwelcoming farmhouse to the deep woods of her own hometown, Liz follows the threads of a terrible secret to uncover a hidden world created from dreams and haunted by nightmares.

Book Excerpt:

Chapter One

The children had never been this far from home before. Liz had spent most of yesterday driving around, hunting for no-mess Crayola coloring books, praying they weren’t too juvenile to keep a six- and eight-year-old occupied in the car, then running up and down the supermarket aisles in search of bars and snack pouches in case they couldn’t find food on the road. Or in case they did find something, and Paul wouldn’t allow the kids to eat it.

Now the hours had ticked by, four of them, and it seemed they were no closer to their destination than they had been when they left home. Descending from the mountains of Wedeskyull had presented a stark contrast and it felt like they were really traveling. But the view outside the windows ever since had been made up of little besides cornfields. Liz wouldn’t have believed how bleak acres and acres of green could appear when the crop was so unvarying. The road they were driving on hadn’t dipped or risen for thirty minutes. It was a flat length of asphalt, inky mirages always shimmering just ahead.

“Mommy?”

“Yes, sweetie?”

“I wish we could see some real trees.”

As tired as she was—and they weren’t even at the hardest part of this day yet—Liz smiled reflexively. Ally, her gardening partner, her green thumb girl. To say that their youngest had a desire to be out in nature was like saying she had a desire to breathe. Sometimes Liz looked into her little girl’s eyes and saw a tiny version of herself in the serious brown lenses.

“Mom?”

Reid’s turn now. Liz glanced in the rearview, but it wasn’t angled to offer a glimpse of her son. “What is it, hon?”

“I’m bored.”

“Me, too,” Ally chimed in. “Everything looks the same out my window.”

The flatness was getting to Liz, too. She looked over at Paul in the driver’s seat.

“Another round of I Spy?” he suggested. “Or Ghost?”

Liz had already decided that car games must’ve been invented by some not-so-benevolent dictator masquerading as an elementary school teacher. For that matter, cars might’ve been invented by the same person, minus the schoolteacher part. She had no idea how people sat still for so long. Her body itched to be moving, knees sinking into the soil, hands digging in the ground. She had sympathy for both kids, who up till now had actually been pretty good.

“How about we sing?” she suggested, channeling the voice of that dictatorial teacher. Liz Daniels, schoolmarm.

Boos and groans from the backseat.

Paul responded belatedly. “I might have to let you out here if you do that.”

Liz laughed.

“Mom? I’m hungry.”

“Me, too!” Ally crowed.

Liz looked at Paul, but her husband had subsided into silence, eyes fixed on the long, blank road. “Bored and hungry, huh?” she said, twisting to peer into the backseat. A sight through the back window made her frown for a moment, but then the unhappy faces distracted her. She reached for a light tone. “Boy, you guys are really a mess.”

“Mom!”

“Mommy!”

The protests were fast approaching a whine.

“Paul?” Liz said, squinting at the back window again.

Her husband didn’t answer. Liz’s gaze darted to the rearview.

“Paul,” she said more urgently.

He looked at her.

“I think that truck has been behind us for a long time,” she said.

Her husband reached up and tilted the mirror to get a better look. “It’s just a pickup truck,” he said, his tone a shrug.

“I know,” Liz said. “But look how closely it’s trailing us.”

She made sure to pitch her voice low so as not to alert the children. Reid, especially, had a tendency to get scared. His fear of death belied both his age and understanding. When Liz’s great-aunt had died last year, they took Ally to the funeral, but left Reid behind. No low-impact introduction to the subject, such as a children’s storybook or short-lived pet hermit crab, enabled Reid to cope. They even skirted cemeteries in case Reid caught a glimpse of a gravestone. Liz actually mapped out alternate routes to school or the grocery store or seed depot, aware of where Wedeskyull’s dead were laid. And although she occasionally dragged the whole family to church, hoping a religious connection might provide some sort of framework for Reid’s fears, she usually regretted it. The sermons about heaven terrified him, and Liz had to work to steer clear of the tilting rows of headstones in the churchyard.

She wondered whether this boycott approach to death was really wise. The ban would have to end sometime, and then what?

The pickup had drawn even closer, but Paul’s glance didn’t shift from the road in front of them. Liz had the idea to try and identify the model, but it was impossible to make out the front grille, so close was it to their car. They passed a farm, and a pungent, animal stink came in through the vents, the smell of portable potties and compost that needed turning.

“Mo-om!”

The whine had become a shriek. Reid, going right past Go without stopping to collect his two hundred dollars.

Then Ally joined in. “How much longer? I’m hungry! I’m super hungry!”

The pickup loomed above them now, filling the entire rear window.

The volume in the backseat died at the exact moment as the noise from the pickup exploded into a rattle and a roar. Liz glanced down to see that her pocketbook had vanished, unfelt, from its position in her lap. It was in the backseat, and the children had begun tearing into packets of fruit snacks, looking shocked and sugar-stung by their unexpected bounty. At home, Paul tended to limit even the natural brands of treats, but these had been for an emergency.

An emergency.

The pickup truck’s engine growled, so close it would soon be touching them. Liz braced herself for the jolt, sending an alarmed look toward Paul. He seemed to have finally noticed the vehicle rearing up behind them, although he still appeared unperturbed. Their hybrid didn’t even handle winters at home all that well, and it certainly wasn’t built to go head-to-head with a truck. Liz closed her eyes against an image of the back of their car getting pleated, accordion-folded with Ally and Reid inside.

She suppressed a scream, willing her husband to floor it.

The truck swerved into the other lane. For just a moment it hovered beside them, holding even with their car. Liz caught a glimpse of the driver’s furious face, his knotted eyebrows. Then the pickup rocketed by them at such high speed that their car swayed in its wake.

Paul tapped the brake, swiveling the steering wheel to straighten out. He gave a shake of his head. “What a jerk.”

Liz’s chest was heaving beneath her T-shirt.

“A jerk?” she repeated. “Honey, that guy—I think it was deliberate. He was trying to terrorize us. Or something.”

The something was vague and unarticulated in her mind. It had to do with being away from home, as far away as they’d ventured since both kids were born. It might even have had to do with their destination, her husband’s childhood home, a place Liz had never visited before. But the expression on the driver’s face hadn’t just been her imagination, or an artifact of Liz’s sense of disjointedness. He had looked into her eyes with real rage.

Maybe they’d just been driving too slowly, Paul reluctant to get where they were going.

Her husband’s gaze slipped past hers. More and more interactions between them were going this way: Paul imposing his vision, Liz protesting in a way that felt feeble. She wondered when they had fallen into these roles. It used to be that their differences balanced them, but lately it seemed they just kept them on opposite sides.

Opposite sides of what? Liz wondered.

She decided to try again. “Paul, he practically hit us.”

Paul flicked the cruise control back on and spoke calmly. “Well, he’s gone now.”

The pickup had indeed shot ahead, not even its tail visible any longer in front of them. In the backseat, the kids were quietly eating gummies.

She recalled the rising fear that had filled her, like water coming in. Not like her at all; Liz considered herself the practical half of their pairing. Down there in the trenches of the day-to-day, making sure things stayed their course. The house, school, the kids’ activities. While Paul painted lofty pictures of what could be, leading people along like a Pied Piper.

He had settled back against the seat.

Ever since she’d known him, her husband’s customary capability, which he wore like thick tree bark, had been a source of comfort, allowing Liz to reach for things she never otherwise would have. Her business. The children even. But for one flickering moment, with the car gliding smoothly along, Paul’s unruffled demeanor made her angry.

She spied the blue sign that signaled services ahead. Liz forced herself to reach over, touch her husband’s arm.

“How about we stop?” she said, aware of the complexities such a pause would create, but not caring at the moment. “I think we could all use a break.”

Book Description:

Innkeeper and irrepressible sleuth Judith McMonigle Flynn and cousin Renie face off against a cold-blooded killer in a beach community in this delightfully charming Bed-and-Breakfast mystery from USA Today and New York Times bestselling author Mary Daheim.

With the holidays gone and Hillside Manor almost empty, Innkeeper Judith McMonigle Flynn has a bad case of the blues. A housesitting stint at her aunt and uncle’s retirement home on Whoopee Island with cousin Renie seems like the ideal pick-me-up. Surrounded by retirees in the off-season sounds peaceful and pleasant--or so the duo thinks. But it isn’t long before a dead body pops up in their vicinity. Not surprising in an area full of older folks—until they learn it wasn’t a bad ticker that did in the victim, but a very sharp knife. With clouds of suspicion hovering over her and Renie, Judith reluctantly begins sleuthing—if only to prove they didn’t commit the crime.

But what she finds is puzzling. The victim reputedly didn’t have an enemy in the world--except for the killer. Digging for clams and answers, the cousins discover that retirement can be deadly—at least among the eclectic, eccentric residents of Obsession Shores.

My Book Review:

In Clam Wake, the latest installment of the popular Bed-And-Breakfast Mystery Series, author Mary Daheim weaves an entertaining cozy mystery tale that follows the latest adventures of Hillside Manor B&B Inkeeper and amateur sleuth Judith McMonigle Flynn and her partner / cousin Renie.

The quiet retirement community residents have recently been divided over a proposed ordinance, but who would want one of their own dead? Judith and Renie take on the murder investigation in a community full of gossip and crazy antics from the eccentric Obsession Shores residents.

About The Author

Seattle native Mary Richardson Daheim lives three miles from the house where she was raised. From her dining nook she can see the maple tree in front of her childhood home. Mary isn’t one for change when it comes to geography. Upon getting her journalism degree from the University of Washington (she can see the campus from the dining nook, too), she went to work for a newspaper in Anacortes WA. Then, after her marriage to David Daheim, his first college teaching post was in Port Angeles where she became a reporter for the local daily. Both tours of small-town duty gave her the background for the Alpine/Emma Lord series. Mary spent much of her non-fiction career in public relations (some would say PR is fiction, too). But ever since she learned how to read and write, Mary wanted to tell stories that could be put between book covers (e-readers were far into the future and if she hadn’t seen her daughter’s iPad, she might not know they exist). Thus, she began her publishing career with the first of seven historical romances before switching to mysteries in 1991. If Mary could do the math, she’d know how many books she’s published. Since she can’t, she estimates the total is at least 55. Or something. See below—count ‘em if you can. At the time of her husband and mentor’s death in February 2010, David and Mary had been married for over 43 years. They have three daughters, Barbara, Katherine and Magdalen, and two granddaughters, Maisy and Clara. They all live in Seattle, too. Those apples don’t move far from the tree…literally.

Author Guest Post

Dream Movie Cast: There are two kinds of authors; the ones who create their dream movie cast, and the ones who lie about not giving it a thought. I am absolutely an author who has already cast the characters of my novel! This is a question I get asked a lot, and I usually want to wait until they have read my book to answer. I’d hate to taint the image of a character for someone else. It’s probably more fun for me to hear who the readers are picturing as the story progresses, than for the reader to hear who I had in my mind as I was writing it. Nevertheless, here goes…

1. Annie Whitman & Kessler Carlisle- I have no idea with these two. I’m so invested in these characters, (especially since I’m halfway through writing the sequel) and for some reason, I can’t picture their faces. I see every other detail- height, weight, hair, stature, hand gestures- but neither one of them has an actual face. I can give you some reader’s thoughts though.

Annie- Amy Adams, Kate Hudson, Jessica Chastain, Rachel McAdams, Reese Witherspoon

Kessler- Matthew McConaughey, Blake Shelton, Brad Pitt, Oliver Hudson

2. Jack Whitman- Matthew Fox

3. Wade Rutledge- Tim McGraw

4. Hope Rutledge- Faith Hill

5. Mama D- Cathy Bates, Dolly Parton, or Jean Smart (from the TV show Designing Women)

6. Jamie Whitman- Scott Wolf (Yes, I realize the cliché that Matthew Fox and Scott Wolf played brothers on the TV show, Party of Five, but I have always pictured Scott as Jamie. Matthew Fox came way later in the game.)

7. Liz Whitman- Ali Larter

8. Hutch- Jeff Bridges or Denzel Washington

9. Gail Adams- Holly Hunter

10. Leslie Abbott- Jennifer Connelly

11. Jenna Walker- Zoe Saldana

12. Claire Kingsley- Alyssa Milano

13. Tori Slade- Emily Blunt

Thinking about characters is fun, but stressful at the same time. I’ll never say never, but I’m sure I have some time to perfect this list.

Book Description:

Annie Whitman’s ordinary Midwest life is shattered with the sudden death of her husband Jack. Thirty-five and failing at life as a widow, she turns to the comforts of vodka in an attempt to camouflage the cold sheets of an empty bed. The necessary inebriation helps her to cope with Jack’s death, but proves to be a deterrent in recovering any sense of normalcy. After spending several months at the bottom of a bottle, Annie stumbles upon a lockbox in the crawl space of her basement. Opening this box also opens her eyes to the likelihood that Jack Whitman might not have been the honest and doting man she married.

Annie embarks on a mission to the Virgin Islands to uncover the truth about her husband’s past and seek safety from her brother-in-law, who seems to be the captain of his own sinking ship. While settling into paradise, she meets the wickedly handsome, but surprisingly reserved Kessler Carlisle, who is struggling with his retirement from country music superstardom. With Kessler’s help, Annie discovers the heart’s uncanny ability to heal, and the possibility that dead men don’t always keep their secrets-even if they’re buried in the Caribbean waters of St. Croix.

The Achilles Heel delves into the formidable fact that everyone harbors darkness, and some will go to the depths of the ocean to keep their secrets hidden.

Book Excerpt:

KESSLER

We stood underneath the stage feeling the ground shake- the floors pulsing and vibrating in a rhythmic, stomping pattern. The noise was deafening, like a freight train rolling at full steam right over our heads. This was the final concert of a six month long, twenty-two city tour. The band huddled together backstage for what, unbeknownst to them, was going to be my final show- ever. Drew, my drummer, gave the pep talk tonight about living in the moment and doing our best, like our lives depended on it.

“Those people out there worked all week and spent their hard earned money to come see us play here tonight, so don’t any of you fuck it up for ‘em!” he yelled over the crowd screaming in the stadium. “It’s the last show of the tour, so let’s blow their fuckin’ minds! All right? Now, everybody get your hands in and let me hear it on three.”

Six hairy, snarled, middle-aged, yet talented hands stacked one upon the other as we all screamed “boo-yah,” while throwing them up in the air.

I had to laugh. Drew was never much of a poet, but he could give one hell of a pep talk. Our usual routine for this tour was to have the band already set up and out on the stage before I made my grand entrance, but for the finale we’re making a change. Tonight we’re all taking the stage together; one family, one band of brothers, one last time. We crowded onto the pitch-black elevator, collectively took in a deep breath, and then I flipped the switch. As soon as the crowd saw us rising up from the floor, it was on, for all of us.

We always start out with a few favorites to get the crowd pumped up. They responded exactly how we had hoped; everyone went ape shit. Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas City is one of the best places to do a show; Midwestern folk who love country music and know how to throw one hell of a party. Fans started arriving in the stadium parking lot at nine o’clock in the morning, and the opener wasn’t set to go on until six in the evening. People who love to spend an entire summer day baking on the black asphalt in the scorching sun, fishing out beer cans from the truck bed cooler, and smoking BBQ, just waiting to hear some live music, are my kind of people. I’m glad this is the spot for the final show- my final show.

During the first set as I looked out into the audience, I could see about ten rows in front of me from anywhere on the stage. I used to always look for the most beautiful girls, and inevitably, I would spot a couple in every city. I’d send my roadie out to the seats to ask them if they wanted to come backstage to meet me and the boys, have some drinks, and party for a while. This was an extremely useful tactic in no-strings attached one-nighters, and there were many, many one-nighters. When I was younger I was so proud of myself, thought I was the shit, a real big deal that all these girls wanted to sleep with me. A few years ago, I finally realized our night together was just a story to tell their friends or an article to sell to the tabloids. I don’t regret the girls or mistakes I’ve made because they’re part of my journey that’s led me to this point, but I’m ready to move on now.

Tonight there’s a group of six women having a ball together. I’d say they were mid-twenties, sitting in the third row, all of them singing along and cheers’sing each other after every song. I sent Randy out to schmoose on them during the set break and ask them if they’d like to come backstage after the show. That invite certainly revved up their engines, because I got all kinds of “fuck me” eyes during the second set.

A sixty foot screen flanks each side of the stage allowing a front row view from any seat in the stadium. This only amplifies my seduction of the crowd when Lacy, my camera girl, fills it full with images of just my ass- sixty feet (one-hundred and twenty if you count both screens) of my ass over and over again. I get it though, whatever sells tickets. My schedule over the last five years had become less about the music and more about the money my image brings in. Singer/songwriters, authors, actors, and anyone in “the business” have been bitching about this for decades. I went to Nashville to be a songwriter, and fifteen years later I’ve become sixty feet of ass in tight white jeans.

I always told myself, that when this dream of mine became too mechanical and I couldn’t give every part of myself to the fans, I’d hang it up. It’s been a great ride and only a handful of people have been with me from the very beginning. Those are the people who deserve all of me; they’ve earned it, but I can’t give one hundred and twenty percent anymore. Don’t I deserve a normal life again? I’ve earned that, too.

As the last song of the encore performance wrapped up, the spotlights put on a magnitude of a show and the fireworks shot up into the sky like rockets in flight. The crowd howled with gratitude for a job well done. Anyone who has ever had major success in business, particularly in finance, says, “Buy low and sell high,” and that’s exactly what I’m doing here tonight. I worked my ass off playing dive bars and LSU frat parties for years, eating at Taco Bell and Popeye’s Chicken whenever I could afford it, and excited I had made the money to do so. Now, I’m playing in a sold out arena with fans screaming my name, singing my songs, and girls still wanting to come back stage to meet me.

Yeah, I’d definitely say I’m high.

My Book Review:

In her debut novel, The Achilles Heel, author Karyn Rae weaves an intriguing tale of romantic suspense that easily draws the reader into the story from the beginning.

When Annie Whitman's husband Jack suddenly dies in a tragic car accident, her world is turned upside down, unable to cope with her grief Annie escapes into the bottom of a vodka bottle. When Annie resurfaces and finds the courage to move forward with her life, she receives a key at the will reading and stumbles upon a lockbox stored in the crawl space in the basement that contained items that has Annie questioning her husband's life and death. Annie embarks on an investigative journey that will transport her from her home in Kansas City, Missouri to the tropical island paradise of St. Croix, Virgin Islands, where she follows mysterious clues in search of the truth behind her husband's secret past.

Kessler Carlisle is a country music superstar from Nashville. Tired of the whole music scene, Kessler announces his retirement after playing his final tour date, and escapes to the relaxing tropical island of St Croix, Virgin Islands. Even though he finds the peace and quiet he sought on his island retreat, Kessler is having a hard time adjusting to his retirement ... that is until he meets the lovely widow Annie Whitman.

Filled with intriguing mystery, suspense, and an unexpected romance, the reader follows the story of Annie and Kessler as they deal with issues, secrets, and discover the truth of what is really important in life.

Author Karyn Rae does a wonderful job of weaving mystery and romance within the storyline, it is filled with enough suspenseful twists and turns that keeps the reader guessing what will happen next. I loved following Annie's journey as she searched to uncover her dead husband's secret past. The danger that lurked and the unexpected twists and turns kept me engaged and turning the pages. I would be remiss if I didn't mention that I loved the romance that blossomed between Annie and Kessler. In my mind I pictured Kessler to be a mix between country music stars Blake Shelton and Kenny Chesney ... wow what a yummy combination! I loved the raw emotion, passion, friendship, and sassy banter that made up their relationship, it is a testament of the heart's ability to heal and move on.

With a realistic cast of characters who are easy to relate to; witty dialogue and dramatic interactions; and a rich description of the settings; The Achilles Heel is a captivating romance suspense novel that will draw you in with its intensity and drama, and leave you wanting more with its unexpected and surprising conclusion.

Book Description:

Falling hard never felt so good.

Pair skaters Courtney and Mark have one shot left at their Olympic dream. They vow not to let anything get in their way, especially not Josh and Stephanie, the wealthy and talented brother and sister team.

The heart doesn’t always listen to reason, though...

The more time Courtney spends with sweet, shy Josh, the harder she falls for him. But they are on opposite sides of the competition, and their futures are headed in opposite directions. Will their friendship blossom into more or are their paths too different to cross?

Book Excerpt:

I turned to Josh with my arms folded and my head cocked to the side. “So, you’re an athlete, a dancer and a musician? If you tell me you’re a skilled artist, I’m gonna have to hate you.”

He laughed. “I can barely draw a stick figure.”

“Whew.” I swiped my hand across my forehead.

“Even if I was the next Picasso, though, I wouldn’t have told you.” He paused and held my gaze. “I don’t like the idea of you hating me.”

My stomach fluttered. Josh didn’t often make extended eye contact, but whenever he locked those sinfully blue eyes on mine, I became a mesmerized puddle of swoon.

My Book Review:

I couldn't be any happier than when I saw that author Jennifer Comeaux was writing a new ice skating spinoff series called the Ice series from her wildly popular the Edge series!

In Crossing the Ice, the first book in the Ice series, the stories from the Edge series continue a few years later featuring the ice skating pair of Courtney and Mark and their competitor brother-sister team of Josh and Stephanie. With an Olympic medal on the line and competitor ice skating pairs working with the same coaches, can Courtney and Josh's blossoming friendship turn into love, and possibly stand in the way of Courtney and Mark's obtaining their Olympic dreams?

Author Jennifer Comeaux once again calls upon her passion for competitive ice skating to weave an emotionally dramatic tale of friendship, love, and competitive dreams that will steal your breath away. If you are a fan of ice skating and all the drama that goes on behind the scenes, then this new spinoff series is a must read. If you are a hopeless romantic who loves the dramatic challenges and trials and tribulations that Courtney and Josh will face involving the balancing of life choices and forbidden love relationships, then you're in luck, because the author takes the reader on an exhilarating and emotional roller coaster ride as their love story unfolds.

With an intriguing cast of recurring and new characters; engaging dialogue and dramatic interactions; a richly detailed description of the settings and world of Olympic competitive ice skating; and a riveting storyline full of drama, angst, suspense and romance; Crossing the Ice is an amazing romantic story that will leave you believing in the power of love and wanting more from this new exciting series.

Book Description:

Political strategist Glenda Nelson is having a meltdown. Her handpicked, very married Congressional candidate was just caught climbing out of the window of the Sleepytown Motel, and her philandering ex-husband seems to have the most to gain from the colossal scandal that follows. As Glenda attempts to salvage the campaign in a hotly contested race, conservative and liberal pundits pounce on the story to further their own agendas.

Glenda’s love life is nonexistent to say the least, that is, until she meets handsome artist Chris Goodrich. Chris’s easy-going, carefree outlook on life couldn’t be more different than the 90-mph crazy train that is Glenda’s, but the more time she spends with him, the more she craves his calming presence, his sexy smile, and his steamy embraces. Is Chris the one to take a chance on?

Between the pressure of full-blown spin control mode, rapidly declining job security, refereeing two teenagers, caring for aging parents, and spending hours on her therapist’s couch trying to get past her ex’s crushing betrayal, Glenda finds love and makes the long trek back to happy.

Book Excerpt:

Glenda gets her first look at the new man in her life.

“And now the moment we’ve all been waiting for. Our artist, Christopher Goodwich, was commissioned nearly a year ago and has come here from his home state of Ohio for tonight’s unveiling. He has won multiple accolades for his work, and the Goodwich Family Foundation is well-known among philanthropists. Mr. Goodwich, would you do the honors?”

Christopher Goodwich moved from his place in line, yanked a gold pull rope, and the black curtain fell away. I looked up at the thirty-foot mural of a Lancaster County Revolutionary War battle as did everyone else. To my amazement this typically chattering crowd fell silent other than a smattering of appreciative oohs and aahs.

The painting was stunningly beautiful. I could see the hope and fear on the faces of the soldiers and practically hear the roar of the cannons and smell the smoke. Our host grabbed the microphone again and began discussing the mural as if he had the foggiest understanding of artwork. But it made me curious about the artist, and I took a second look at Christopher Goodwich.

He was a handsome man. Casually masculine with green eyes and a smile that made me think about George Clooney in a tuxedo. Get those hormones under control, I thought. At forty-six with a rather ugly divorce under my belt and two teenage children, I needed a man like the President needed another Cabinet nominee in tax trouble.

My Book Review:

A political scandal, two teenage children, a manipulative philandering ex-husband, and a non-existent love life, how much more can forty-six year old political strategist Glenda Nelson handle in her life? Does Glenda have the time and enough energy for love when Christopher Goodwich, a celebrated artist unexpectedly comes into her life?

Red, White & Screwed is an entertaining romance novel that follows the crazy daily life trials and tribulations of Lancaster County Democratic Committee political strategist Glenda Nelson. Author Holly Bush weaves a humorous tale that easily draws the reader into the crazy arena of Lancaster County, Pennsylvania politics that makes up the demanding, stressed out, and overworked Glenda Nelson's world.

When Glenda's political candidate for the US Senate is caught having an affair ... a twelve year affair that is ... all hell breaks loose, and it is left up to Glenda to salvage the campaign. This single mother of two precocious teenagers, with aging parents to care for, and a philandering ex-husband whose crushing betrayal caused her to seek therapy sessions, has enough on her plate, but when she unexpectedly meets artist Christopher Goodwich at the county courthouse mural unveiling, she starts to think that maybe it would be worth the risk to find love again.

Red, White & Screwed is a fast-paced humorous political romance novel that kept me thoroughly entertained. You can't help but relate to and sympathize with Glenda as she tries to juggle everything in her stressed out life, one that is filled with enough daily trials and tribulations that would make anyone go bonkers. This is a fun story that has plenty of crazy political mishaps, humorous family drama, and a heartwarming unexpected romance that keeps the reader turning the pages. I loved the quirky and realistic characters, the drama and humor, and the witty intertwining of politics and romance within the storyline.

Red, White & Screwed is an enjoyable romance novel that provides plenty of comedy, laugh-out-loud moments, and a sweet romance that will leave a smile on your face.
