Amazon.com Book Description:

Meet Josie Jenkins, a Brit living in Texas, a fan of indulgent body-scrubs and the odd glass of wine. She's currently Customer Service Manager at Harpers & Green Co, home of high-end shirts and also, rather unhelpfully, Bob Green: her ex-boyfriend (who also happens to be married). She is thousands of miles away from home and her job appears to be in jeopardy - safe to say, Josie's going through a wobbly patch. So when the rather handsome Callum Doherty, (just picture blue eyes and Irish good looks) begins flirting with Josie, she is thrilled ... until she realizes she's not the only girl at work with her eye on the office heart-throb. How can she compete against her pert-bottom rival from the accounts department? Josie's love-life takes another complicated and unexpected turn when out of the blue Josie receives a mysterious Facebook friend request from her high-school sweetheart, Tom Barker. Tom is keeping something from her, drawing her in and causing her to question if it's time to reconnect the past with the present. It's time for some soul searching. Will Josie take the emotional trip back to the UK or try her luck with the handsome Mr. Doherty? Is there heartbreak ahead in Josie's future?

My Book Review:

Welcome to Josie's world! This thirty-something Brit, now living in Dallas, Texas, is one neurotic but lovable hot mess! Josie came to the US as a college drama student in the exchange program, and upon graduating college dreamed of being a Hollywood star. When her dream didn't come to fruition, she found herself employed as a Customer Service Manager at Harpers & Green, a specialty mail order high-end shirt company, courtesy of Bob Green, who had flirted with her at a bar, gave her a job, and oh yeah ... had a two and half year affair with, that was until he called it off because he "just couldn't cheat" on his wife any longer. Now that her world has been turned upside down, she tries to pick up the pieces of her single woman's life, and hopefully her love life as well ... chocolate and wine do wonders ... just saying .. wink, wink!

Amidst the bouts of homesickness for her family in the UK, and the loneliness of living the single-woman's lifestyle, enter three men that will change Josie's life. Dashing Callum Doherty, the office hottie becomes interested in her, and yet there is something mysterious about the man, he seems to have to run home to Chicago a lot ... will Josie solve his mystery and keep him for herself? And then there is good old Bob, seems like he still "wants" Josie ... is she finally over him and ready to move on? And finally, there is a Facebook friend request from an old high-school boyfriend back in the UK, Tom Barker. Josie and Tom swap personal messages on Facebook, but there is something he is holding back from her, and he wants her to come visit him in the UK. Will she follow her curiosity and travel back to the past to find out what she left behind?

Oh and just one more little tidbit to whet your appetite ... Josie is full of quirky habits that she reveals in unsent letters to just about everyone and everything: her family, friends, items (mascara, lycra, etc) and companies (restaurants, trashy magazines, hospitals) ... you name it, she writes it, and every letter will keep you in stitches! So settle back into a comfy chair and have a "cuppa" tea like the Brits do and read all about Josie's story!

High-Heels & Slippers! was one hell of an entertaining book to read! I laughed so much throughout the whole book, I thoroughly enjoyed reading about Josie's neurotic life! The storyline is well written, and the characters are realistic, there is just something about their unique personalities that add so much more to the story. I ran the gamut of emotions as I read the story, from the highs to the lows, and came away completely satisfied. This book will provide it all for true chick-lit fans, well except for the chocolate and wine, y'all will have to supply that for yourselves! Kudos to Ms. Slayne on a wonderful debut novel, I look forward to reading more of her books in the future.

INSPIRATION FOR A NOVEL SHAPED BY LIFE
CHANDRA HOFFMAN

I have always been a storyteller - I wrote my first novella at age 5 on my father's dress shirt cardboards, illustrated with crayon and bound with yarn, a love story called "And So They Kissed." Growing up, I was on the older edge of my flood of first cousins and I was their storyteller; elaborate ongoing sagas about rats that snarl the hair of children while they sleep and a lonely boy with an inventor father and migraine-afflicted socialite mother.

But my first novel, CHOSEN was influenced and shaped by a trail of experiences and opportunities. It wasn't as though I chose the adventures so I could write about them, but the stories shaped my life, and subsequently, a novel.

In 1995 I was a senior at Cornell University when I connected with a professor who wanted an aide worker to go into a Romanian orphanage and hospital where her own adoption stalled. I volunteered, flying to Bucharest alone, not knowing the language or the social complexities that had created a country where most orphans were not without parents, just abandoned to a state-run foster care. I only knew I loved babies and travel, adventure. It was overwhelming, (I was given fifty infants my first day) and heartbreaking, nearly impossible for me to leave Bucharest to finish my degree at last I did.

After college, I couldn't stop thinking about adoption, abut the circumstances surrounding new life that will shape it forever. At the end of several years abroad, I applied for a position at an international adoption agency and ended up as the director of their US program, the sole caseworker juggling birthmothers and waiting families. I fell in love with both the city of Portland and the heady allure of a job so full of promise.

Like Chloe Pinter, I went into it with the intention of creating happy endings. Similar to when I stepped off the plane in Romania, I quickly scrambled to learn a new language and subculture; the business side of adoption. But as the months passed, I got too attached. I cried and raged at some adoptions that fell apart, and just as painfully for some that went through. I left not because I no longer believed in adoption, but because the potential for joy and heartache walking the razor's edge was no longer something I was able to agent. I realized my skin had become too thin.

Faced with our own pregnancy and an unexpected diagnosis at our first son's birth, I pondered some of the deeper issues that formed the backbone of this novel. How does parenthood change you? How will the challenges you face shape you as a couple? What happens when your expectations of parenthood are so far from the reality? What makes a good parent? A good person?

All of these courageous people whose lives had touched mine so intimately rattled around with me as I adjusted to that first year of new parenthood. Driving home from a pre-dawn airport run, exhausted from getting up to hang bottles for my newborn's feeding tube, I stopped to get gas at a filling station not far from the very place where a child was abducted twenty years earlier. Knowing this, I still fantasized about not lugging the car seat and its precious cargo out with me just to run in for a diet coke ... But what if I didn't?

The idea for this novel was born out of that single scene. A mother so exhausted her judgment lapses; a grief-stricken, empty-armed man who takes advantage of this. The story is fiction - characters and settings and scenarios are as though I took a handful of experiences, marinated them in a childhood paranoia of abduction, seasoned them with the salt of my vivid imagination, put the whole thing in a bag and shook it up - but the themes are real. I wanted to write a story set against the backdrop of Portland's rainy winter and the domestic adoption scene that captured the moment my characters struggled to answer the question: What happens when you get what you thought you wanted? I didn't want for there to be clear heroes or villains, just shades of grey, real people trying to recover from their human stumbles with grace.

ASIN: B003TLN7PC
Genre: General Contemporary Fiction / Women's Fiction

About The Author:

Since graduating from Cornell University, Chandra has been an orphan relief worker in Romania, a horse trainer in the Caribbean, a short order cook in a third world hospital, the director of a US adoption program and an event planner for Philadelphia's Main Line elite.

She has lived in eleven international cities and this wanderlust shaped her writing - in each novel, the setting is its own character, flavoring the story. She prefers to write about everyday scenarios, shining a light on the complexities of situations through the voices of multiple characters. Her debut novel, Chosen, uses the domestic adoption scene of Portland, Oregon as a backdrop to pose the questions "What happens when you get what you thought you wanted?" and "How far would you go if it might not be what you want anymore?"

Chandra received her MFA from Antioch University in 2007. She is now settled back in her hometown outside of Philadelphia with her husband, three young children and an ever-changing menagerie.

Amazon.com Book Description:

In Chosen, a young caseworker becomes increasingly entangled in the lives of the adoptive and birth parents she represents, and who faces life-altering choices when an extortion attempt goes horribly wrong, with devastating results.

It all begins with a fantasy: the caseworker in her "signing paperwork" charcoal suit, paired with beaming parents cradling their adoptive newborn, against a fluorescent-lit delivery room backdrop. It's this blissful picture that keeps Chloe Pinter, director of The Chosen Child's domestic adoption program, happy juggling the high demands of her boss and the incessant needs of parents on both sides.

But the job that offers Chloe refuge from her turbulent personal life and Portland's winter rains soon becomes a battleground itself involving three very different couples: the Novas, college sweethearts who suffered fertility problems but are now expecting their own baby; the McAdoos, a wealthy husband and desperate wife for whom adoption is a last chance; and Jason and Penny, an impoverished couple who have nothing - except the baby everyone wants. When a child goes missing, dreams dissolve into nightmares, and everyone is forced to examine what they really want and where it all went wrong.

Told from alternating points of view, Chosen reveals the desperate nature of desire across social backgrounds and how far people will go to get the one thing they think will be the answer.

My Book Review:

Would you be able to be a case worker for an adoption agency, knowing that one set of clients (birth parents) will be giving up their baby and mourning this loss, while another set of clients (adoptive parents) are pinning their hopes and dreams of having a baby to complete their family on your shoulders? What if you found yourself in the birth parents' shoes, unable to keep your baby because of circumstances in your life, would you be able to give your baby up? And finally, what if you were the adoptive parents that have gone down the very emotional and draining route of trying to get pregnant, only to have to deal with infertility and placing your last hope of having a family in the hands of the adoption agency? These and so many other questions are what the characters deal with in Chosen.

Chloe Pinter is a case worker for a Portland domestic adoption agency, the Chosen Child program, and it is her responsibility to pair prospective adoptive parents with expectant birth mothers. Chloe is very passionate about her job, and she feels that "it's an honor to be part of such an important moment in people's lives." Chloe single-handedly has to take care of all the needs of both parties, and this is no easy feat to accomplish. Mix in her own confusing personal life with her childish extreme sport enthusiast boyfriend/"fiance" Dan, and it's a wonder that she can meet everyone's needs! Birth parents look over prospective adoptive parents profiles, and decide which couple will adopt their baby, and not always is the choice made in the best interest of the baby. For birth parents Penny and Jason, the desperate young couple from the wrong side of the tracks, it's all about the money. They choose adoptive parents Francie and John McAdoo, based on their financial status, figuring that the adoption of their baby could lead to a major payday, only to put themselves and the adoptive couple through pure hell along the way. For Paul and Eva Nova, their journey to parenthood wasn't an easy road, they've had twelve prior miscarriages, a failed adoption case, and finally they are pregnant for the thirteenth time, this baby is the long awaited answer to their dreams for completing their family. Their dream becomes a nightmare and their world is turned upside down when their infant son is abducted. For each of the characters in Chosen, their lives become intertwined ...

In Chosen, the storyline is interestingly told by the different perspectives of Chloe; Penny and Jason; Francie and John; Eva and Paul. Each of their stories were intriguing, filled with so much hope, despair, longing and fear ... their very real daily struggle to live their lives, and to make the right and sometimes very wrong life decisions had me riding the emotional roller coaster ride with them. Choosing adoption as the topic of this story was a very thought provoking idea, the author engages her readers to consider the adoption process and all it entails; the good, the bad and the ugly. The author draws upon her own life experience as a former adoption case worker, and this experience gives the fictional story a very realistic look into the world of adoption. This story is definitely not an easy one to digest; but it is very thought provoking, insightful and worthy of much discussion.

Amazon.com Book Description:

When Major Aaron Bricewick is rescued from Afghanistan terrorists, he thinks the worst is over. But his personal journey is just beginning ...

The first surprise is the amputation of one of his legs.

The second is the woman he left behind, now a widow with a 4-year-old son - and his new prosthetist (artificial limb maker).

He vows that losing his leg won't derail his career. But maintaining his outward appearance as a got-it-together officer becomes increasingly difficult as he faces one personal demon after another - and sees his career aspirations slipping away. And though he has no intention of expanding his life to include a woman, his heart has other ideas - and finds himself questioning the very foundation of his personal beliefs.

When violence - and unexpected redemption - touch his life again, Aaron must make a stand. Which will he choose: duty or love?

My Book Review:

What would you do if you were a career military officer who has been abducted by terrorists in Afghanistan, and suffered through excruciating torture for 7 days? Would your military life ever be the same after your rescue, when you find out your injuries would include losing your leg? Would you be able to surrender your pride, and put your trust in God, the military, and let the one woman who you let get away help you recover? And if it came down to choosing between the military or true love, which one would you choose? These are the questions that Major Aaron Bricewick faced in True Surrender.

Major Aaron Bricewick is a career officer in the Army. He was leading a telecommunication unit in Afghanistan, when he was abducted at gunpoint along with his driver, a civilian contractor and a translator (who was executed for being a traitor) by terrorists. The three had been held in captivity for 7 days, with Major Bricewick receiving the brunt of the torture because of his officer's rank. When they were rescued by American forces, Major Bricewick was weak from near starvation and had life-threatening injuries to his hands and legs. After being medevaced to Germany and undergoing surgery to stabilize him, Major Bricewick was transferred to Holbrook Medical Center in Los Angeles, California, for extensive leg surgery which resulted in him having a below the knee amputation to his left leg. What he didn't know was that the woman he left twelve years ago, Holly Rossiter, would end up being on his care team as his prosthetist. What ensues in this fast paced suspenseful romance thriller is Aaron's journey towards recovery, surrendering his pride and finding his faith, discovering deceit in the military that was his life, and giving into the desire to regain the love from the woman that he had let go of so long ago.

True Surrender was everything that I could ask for in a book: a captivating mixture of romance and suspense, what a combination! In a time when Afghanistan is always in the news and our military is stationed there, author Tracey Cramer-Kelly provides her readers with a very realistic and intriguing contemporary military romance suspense thriller. As I followed Aaron and Holly's story, I couldn't help but hope that this book would be made into a movie made for television, it was that good. The storyline is well written, realistic and fast paced. The characters are realistic and believable, I could actually see them being my neighbors since I live in a military town. As a healthcare provider, I enjoyed the author's description of the medical and rehabilitation portions of the story, this is a wonderful attribute from her own real life medical and military experience. The military suspense portion of the story had me sitting on the edge of my seat, holding my breath waiting to see what would happen next. But most of all, I absolutely loved reading about Aaron and Holly's relationship journey, it was sigh worthy! There is not enough words to say how much I enjoyed reading this book, my kudos to Ms. Cramer-Kelly for providing readers with a book that will stay on my favorite list for a long time! I look forward to reading more books from this author!
